Does Insulin And Leucine Stimulate Muscle Protein Synthesis?, Brad Creamer, Jason Scheffler, Steven J. Jones
Does Insulin And Leucine Stimulate Muscle Protein Synthesis?, Brad Creamer, Jason Scheffler, Steven J. Jones
Nebraska Swine Reports
Improvement of protein synthesis in muscle will greatly enhance the production of lean pork. This improvement can be traced to changes at the cellular level. The object of this study was to identify the effects of insulin and the branched chain amino acid, leucine on the extent and rate that messenger RNA (mRNA) is translated into protein. Porcine satellite cells were isolated from a 30 lb pig and cultured. The cultured cells were treated with varying levels of insulin and leucine. Increasing levels of insulin and leucine caused an increase in ribosomes, the organelles responsible for synthesis, only after leucine …

Nebraska Swine Reports
Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effect we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling.
Incidence And Inheritance Of Splayleg In Nebraska Litter Size Selection Lines, Justin W. Holl, Rodger K. Johnson
Incidence And Inheritance Of Splayleg In Nebraska Litter Size Selection Lines, Justin W. Holl, Rodger K. Johnson
Nebraska Swine Reports
Incidence of abnormalities at birth is low in most populations, but accounts for a significant proportion of preweaning deaths. Splayleg pigs (SL) is the most common defect in newborn pigs and a high percentage of SL pigs die before weaning. In research at other institutions, SL incidence was associated with the Landrace breed and with large litters; however, a genetic association with litter size was not demonstrated. The University of Nebraska selection lines originated from a Landrace-Large White composite population and have been selected for 22 generations for increased litter size. These lines provided an excellent resource for the objectives …

Research Proposal Summary: Effects Of Nutrition During Gilt Development On Sow Lifetime Productivity Of Two Prolific Maternal Lines, Rodger K. Johnson, Phillip S. Miller
Nebraska Swine Reports
A four-parity study is proposed to examine the effects of nutritional manipulation during gilt development on subsequent sow performance. Gilts will be selected from two genetic lines that are highly prolific, but differ in rate and composition of growth. During the development period (45 to 250 lb), gilts will be provided either; i) ad libitum access to feed, or ii) ad libitum access to feed until 120 days of age (180 lb) and 75% of ad libitum feed intake thereafter (until first post-pubertal estrus). Sow and litter performance criteria will be examined. In addition, the economics of sow productivity and …

Prrsv Negative Herds: A Survival Analysis, Locke Karriker, Ruby Destajo
Nebraska Swine Reports
Despite a significant body of research, interventions for PRRSV infection remain elusive. Traditional approaches to managing the risk of diseases have not been successful in many cases of PRRSV infection. While elimination of the virus from farms is possible, it is not without cost and re-infection is common. This survey sought to quantify the expected duration of PRRSV negative status on farms that were repopulated with PRRSV negative animals or had undergone a PRRSV elimination program. Results of 96 cases reveals a range of <1 to 312+ weeks duration of negative status. A survival analysis of 84 farms revealed a probability of surviving with negative status for two full years of 58.3% with a standard error of 11.5%. The probability of survival through 4 years was 42% with a standard error of 16%. A greater percentage of farms that were reinfected shared resources such as equipment, personnel, and/or vehicles with known positive farms. Positive farms also had a relatively shorter average distance to known positive farms than those remaining negative. The results of this study indicate that PRRSV-negative farms are not very likely to remain negative for a long duration given current technologies. Longer survival of negative status appears to be associated with greater distance from known positive farms and stricter biosecurity. Sharing of equipment and other resources as well as a closer distance to other farms should be considered risk factors that can lessen the probability of farms maintaining negative status.
How Big Is “Big Enough” To Make A Living In Pork Production?, Allen Prosch
How Big Is “Big Enough” To Make A Living In Pork Production?, Allen Prosch
Nebraska Swine Reports
The size of pork production units in Nebraska increased dramatically from 1989 to 2002. In 1989, producers who marketed less than 1,000 hogs per year held 61% of Nebraska’s hog inventory. By 2002, only 23% of Nebraska’s hogs were held by those producers. Many decisions affect the size of a swine production unit. Basic to any decisions on size is whether the enterprise is profitable and can provide a reasonable living to those owning and working in the unit. Data from the Nebraska Swine Enterprise and Records Analysis program suggests that Nebraska farrow-to-finish producers needed to increase the size of …
Inter-Species Variation In Yolk Steroid Levels And A Cowbird-Host Comparison, D. Caldwell Hahn, Jeff S. Hatfield, Mahmoud A. Abdelnabi, Julie M. Wu, Lawrence D. Igl, Mary A. Ottinger
Inter-Species Variation In Yolk Steroid Levels And A Cowbird-Host Comparison, D. Caldwell Hahn, Jeff S. Hatfield, Mahmoud A. Abdelnabi, Julie M. Wu, Lawrence D. Igl, Mary A. Ottinger
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We examined variability in yolk hormone levels among songbird species and the role of yolk steroids as a mechanism for enhanced exploitation of hosts by the parasitic brown-headed cowbird Molothrus ater. Within-clutch variation in yolk steroids has been found in several avian species in single species studies, but few comparisons have been made among species. We found a large range of differences in yolk testosterone among the seven passerine species examined, with significant differences between those at the high end (song sparrow Melospiza melodia, red-winged blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus, and house sparrow, Passer domesticus) and those at the …

Beyond The Cockfight: Masculinity And The Thai Dove-Cooing Contest, Wanni Wibulswasdi Anderson
Beyond The Cockfight: Masculinity And The Thai Dove-Cooing Contest, Wanni Wibulswasdi Anderson
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The Dove-cooing contest in Thailand began as a leisure activity, the hobby of a particular group of men who found peace, pleasure, and enjoyment in listening to the songs of the singing doves. Some hoped for good luck in raising doves with propitious characteristics. The hobby developed into a sport through the initiative of the Association of Dove Breeders in Thailand. The Association's encouragement of dove breeding found enthusiastic support from dove lovers in all regions, especially in Southern Thailand where many prize-winning dives came from. The study presents the training and care of doves, selected scenes of the contest, …

Note: Exclusive Licensing Of Dna Diagnostics: Is There A Negative Effect On Quantity And Quality Of Healthcare Delivery That Compels Nih Rulemaking?, Edward Weck
William Mitchell Law Review
This comment surveys the costs of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) diagnostic tests and argues in favor of non-exclusive licensing as a means to provide broad access to affordable DNA diagnostic testing. Part II provides background information on genetic testing, patenting genes as applied to genetic testing, the Bayh-Dole Act, and technology transfer. In addition, Part II summarizes academic commentary regarding the implications of exclusive licensing for biotechnology. Scholars propose a number of solutions, including expanding the experimental use exception. Part III details proposed rulemaking for DNA diagnostics. Part IV reviews anecdotal examples of genetic testing for breast cancer, hereditary hemochromatosis, and …

Note: The Legislature Should Clean Up Its Act—The Minnesota Citizens’ Personal Protection Act, A Dnr Technical Bill, And The Single-Subject And Title Clause Of The Minnesota Constitution, Melissa M. Milbert
William Mitchell Law Review
This note explores the Ramsey County District Court’s decision in Unity Church v. Minnesota recently affirmed by the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This note does not, however, debate the merits of Minnesota’s conceal-and-carry law. Part II traces the legislative path taken by both the natural resource and conceal-and-carry bills. Part II surveys the history of the single-subject and title clause of the Minnesota Constitution and the evolution of the Minnesota Supreme Court’s interpretation of the clause since its enactment. Part III summarizes the factual and procedural posture of the Unity Church decision. Part IV then contends that the legislature’s enactment …

Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund
Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund
Faculty Articles
The article discusses the affirmative action programs in the workplace in the U.S. with reference to Grutter v. Bollinger case. Affirmative action, including preferential consideration of women and people of color, undoubtedly plays some role in the hiring and promotional decisions that go into creating the diverse workforces. Affirmative action in employment and in higher education currently reaches only those who are at least "qualified" by conventional criteria, and those qualifications are virtually unattainable to many African-Americans who are caught in the deepest cycles of racial isolation and socioeconomic deprivation.

Regulatory Paternalism In The Market For Drugs: Lessons From Vioxx And Celebrex, Richard A. Epstein
Regulatory Paternalism In The Market For Drugs: Lessons From Vioxx And Celebrex, Richard A. Epstein
Faculty Articles
This Article addresses two interlocking issues. Part I develops a simple model to determine which drugs should be released into the marketplace and why. Its central point is that the inherent heterogeneity in all populations cuts strongly in favor of a relaxation in the standard of pre-market approvals, as is urged in a recent paper by Malani and Hu. The regulator who works upstream of the physician and patient lacks any knowledge of individuated circumstances that should rationally influence the decision of which drug, if any, to take, and in what dosage. So long as physicians and patients have some …
Takings, Commons, And Associations: Why The Telecommunications Act Of 1996 Misfired, Richard A. Epstein
Takings, Commons, And Associations: Why The Telecommunications Act Of 1996 Misfired, Richard A. Epstein
Faculty Articles
Joint efforts by two or more parties can be achieved either through voluntary cooperation, through state coercive activity under some version of the takings power, or by the creation of some form of commons. Network industries, such as telecommunications, cannot usually work by the former, and thus require some level of state coercion. The choice of the method of coercion is, however, critical because the use of the eminent domain power does not work well when applied to a high frequency of low level transactions that are difficult to price and monitor. In contrast, the creation of an interconnection obligation, …

Phase I Archaeological Intensive Survey Of Hassanamesitt Woods Property, Grafton, Massachusetts, Jack Gary, Stephen Mrozowski, David B. Landon
Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications
The Center for Cultural and Environmental History conducted a Phase I archaeological intensive survey of the Hassanamesitt Woods property in Grafton, Massachusetts from October 2004 through January 2005. Documentary evidence has suggested that the property may contain remains of the church for the Praying Indian village of Hassanamisco, established by John Eliot in 1660. Historical deed research has also placed several Nipmuc families on the property in the early 18th century, suggesting the area was resettled by the original inhabitants of Hassanimisco in the aftermath of King Philip's War. Throughout the course of the 18th and 19th centuries the property …
Sexuality And Sovereignty: The Global Limits And Possibilities Of Lawrence Symposium: Legal Rights In Historical Perspective: From The Margins To The Mainstream, Sonia K. Katyal
Faculty Scholarship
In the summer of 2003, the Supreme Court handed gay and lesbian activists a stunning victory in the decision of Lawrence v. Texas, which summarily overruled Bowers v. Hardwick. At issue was whether Texas' prohibition of same-sex sexual conduct violated the Due Process Clause of the U.S. Constitution. In a powerful, poetic, and strident opinion, Justice Kennedy, writing for a six-member majority, reversed Bowers, observing that individual decisions regarding physical intimacy between consenting adults, either of the same or opposite sex, are constitutionally protected, and thus fall outside of the reach of state intervention. Volumes can be written about the …

Native And Exotic Phragmites Australis In Rhode Island: Distribution And Differential Resistance To Insect Herbivores, Adam Matthew Lambert
Open Access Dissertations
In this research, I studied an introduced strain of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex. Steudel that is displacing native P. australis in the United States and altering ecological processes of native environments. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of native and exotic P. australis in Rhode Island and determine if there is a difference in resistance to native and exotic insect herbivores among the various P. australis haplotypes. I also studied possible factors that may cause these differences. I conducted experiments using field surveys and field and laboratory insect feeding experiments. All exotic insects tested fed …

The Ecology Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes And Their Antagonists On Golf Course Greens Turf In Southern New England, Katerina Serlemitsos Jordan
Open Access Dissertations
A two-year survey was conducted to determine the ecology of plant-parasitic nematodes and their antagonists on golf course greens turf in southern New England. Soil samples were collected from three greens each at 38 golf courses, for a total of 114 samples. Samples were collected in May, July, and September of each year. Nematodes were extracted from soil samples, identified to genus and counted. Genus diversity and seasonal fluctuation of nematode populations, both within each season and between the two sampling years, were analyzed. Additionally, data on soil physical and chemical properties, as well as management practices on each golf …
