Digital Harmony Of Sound And Light, Bill Alves Jan 2005

Digital Harmony Of Sound And Light, Bill Alves

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In the late 1980s and early 1990s I was privileged to work with the computer animation pioneer John Whitney Sr. and was profoundly influenced by his ideas on how to apply musical concepts of harmony to visual arts of motion. at the time of his death in 1995, he and I were planning composition software in which an artist could apply these concepts to create harmonic patterns simultaneously in sound and animation.
Though this idea was never realized beyond certain tests, I have taken this step in my subsequent work in computer-generated music and video in ways inspired by, if …

Is Capital Punishment Morally Required? - Acts, Omissions, And Life-Life Tradeoffs Ethics And Empirics Of Capital Punishment, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule Jan 2005

Is Capital Punishment Morally Required? - Acts, Omissions, And Life-Life Tradeoffs Ethics And Empirics Of Capital Punishment, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule

Articles

Many people believe that the death penalty should be abolished even if as recent evidence seems to suggest, it has a significant deterrent effect. But if such an effect can be established, capital punishment requires a life-life tradeoff, and a serious commitment to the sanctity of human life may well compel, rather than forbid, that form of punishment. The familiar problems with capital punishment potential error, irreversibility, arbitrariness, and racial skew-do not require abolition because the realm of homicide suffers from those same problems in even more acute form. Moral objections to the death penalty frequently depend on a sharp …

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2005

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Much of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's work on the Supreme Court embodies a commitment to judicial minimalism, understood as a preference for narrow rulings, closely attuned to particular facts. In many contexts, however, that commitment is hard to justify, simply because it imposes severe decisionmaking burdens on others and may well create more, rather than fewer, errors. For this reason, a general preference for minimalism is no more defensible than a general preference for rules. The choice between narrow and wide rulings cannot itself be made by rules or even presumptions; it requires a case-by-case inquiry. The argument is illustrated …

The Limits Of American Generosity, Raj Bhala Jan 2005

The Limits Of American Generosity, Raj Bhala

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article discusses generosity and its relevance in international trade law. Generosity, then - in international trade law - does matter, at least if a better world for the poor is imagined and if their world view is acknowledged. With good reason, many individual Americans - from the Great Plains of Kansas to the five boroughs of New York City - regard themselves as generous people. They give as private citizens, and through their favorite non-governmental organizations ("NGOs"), especially their churches, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship. Yet, from overseas, America is not perceived as a generous nation - …

When Open Courts Meet Closed Government, David M. Paciocco Jan 2005

When Open Courts Meet Closed Government, David M. Paciocco

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The law largely controls the degree to which the open court principle is respected. “Legal culture,” however, has as much to do with the fortunes of the “open court principle” as does the law. The law often provides only standards — not clear answers. The extent to which the open court principle is respected the refore comes down to attitude or the commitment to it among justice system participants. We are fortunate that this is a country with a long and demonstrated commitment to the open court principle. The terrorist attacks of 2001 have ushered in a heightened sense of …

Is There A Perfect Diet? A Comparison Between The Atkins, South Beach, And Metabolic Typing Diets., Neil Habgood

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis will seek to answer the often perplexing question: "How should I eat in order to lose weight and feel better?" Is your goal to lose 10 pounds? Is your goal to lose 100 pounds? Or is your goal simply to live a healthy, pain-free lifestyle? In this paper I will examine two of the most popular diets today, The South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet. I will compare these two diets to another diet known as The Metabolic Typing Diet. I will also explore the psychological impact of positive thinking and goals setting. Ultimately, I will be …

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries Jan 2005

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Environmental intervention projects aim to re-engineer the cultural landscape. Entering at a particular moment in time, such projects commonly produce a "baseline" analysis. This analysis captures elements in the environment that are later compared to measured changes the project claims to produce. Illustrated through a case study of a Tanzanian community conservation non-governmental organization, the argument made in this paper is that uncritical use of such baselines in measuring and evaluating environmental intervention projects is a practice that tends to impose ahistorical understandings of human-environmental relationships that have deep historical roots. The paper illustrates how an attempt to draw a …
