The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey Jan 2005

The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aging is associated with several physiological changes. An important physiological change seen in aging is a shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants, in which increased oxidants, or free radicals, seen with aging lead to increased cellular damage, also called oxidative stress. Immune function of elderly individuals seems to be significantly impacted through a decline of immunologic function as well as dysregulation of inflammatory and specific immune responses. Oxidative stress and the accumulation of free radicals have been implicated in the decline of immune function seen in the aged. Antioxidants, both intracellular and exogenous, counteract free radical damage to …

Uterine Mast Cells And Immunoglobulin-E Antibody Responses During Clearance Of Tritrichomonas Foetus, L. B. Corbeil, C. M. Campero, J. C. Rhyan, M. L. Anderson, L. J. Gershwin, D. W. Agnew, L. Munson, R. H. Bondurant Jan 2005

Uterine Mast Cells And Immunoglobulin-E Antibody Responses During Clearance Of Tritrichomonas Foetus, L. B. Corbeil, C. M. Campero, J. C. Rhyan, M. L. Anderson, L. J. Gershwin, D. W. Agnew, L. Munson, R. H. Bondurant

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We showed earlier that Tritrichomonas foetus–specific bovine immunoglobulin (Ig)G1 and IgA antibodies in uterine and vaginal secretions are correlated with clearance of this sexually transmitted infection. Eosinophils have been noted in previous studies of bovine trichomoniasis but the role of mast cells and IgE responses have not been reported. The hypothesis that IgE and mast cell degranulation play a role in clearance was tested in 25 virgin heifers inseminated experimentally and infected intravaginally with T. foetus strain D1 at estrus and cultured weekly. Groups were euthanatized at 3, 6, 9, or 12 weeks, when tissues were fixed and secretions …

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor Jan 2005

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among black and white females, with approximately 211,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2004 (1). More importantly, incidence has been increasing. Age-adjusted breast cancer incidence in U.S. females rose from the 88.6 per 100,000 in the early 1970s to 109.8 in the early 1990s (2). This represents a 24 percent increase over that time. This trend is only partially explained by the known risk factors for breast cancer, including advancing age, early menarche, late menopause, late age at first parturition and family history. Therefore, researchers have …

Indexing Principles And A Widely Applicable Paradigm For Indexing Animal Populations, Richard M. Engeman Jan 2005

Indexing Principles And A Widely Applicable Paradigm For Indexing Animal Populations, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Monitoring animal populations is an essential component of wildlife research and management. Population indices can be efficient methods for monitoring populations when more labour-intensive densityestimation procedures are impractical or invalid to apply, and many monitoring objectives can be couched in an indexing framework. Indexing procedures obtain maximal utility if they exhibit key characteristics, including being practical to apply, being sensitive to changes or differences in the target species' population, having an inherent variance formula and allowing for precision in index values, and relying on as few assumptions as possible. Additional useful characteristics include being able simultaneously to monitor multiple animal …

Slow Migration Of Capsicum Oleoresin In A Sandy Loam Soil, Ray T. Sterner, Bruce A. Kimball Jan 2005

Slow Migration Of Capsicum Oleoresin In A Sandy Loam Soil, Ray T. Sterner, Bruce A. Kimball

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A mixture of 16.4770.038 L concentrated capsicum oleoresin with 163.873.63L water and a total of 17.2L concentrated soybean oil with 177.1L water was dispensed over five 4.87m4.87m plots via a grid of 128 augured holes (E15 cmdiameter E30 cm deep) in a compacted, sandy loam soil. During the next 9 days, a total of 37 soil samples were obtained from these plots and other off-plot areas. Spectrophotometric analyses of dual aliquots of soil samples were performed to detect absorbance of capsaicin (lmax at 282 nm). Analysis of variance showed that absorbance readings from points of capsicum application (augured holes) were …

Evaluation Of Bird Shield As A Blackbird Repellent In Ripening Rice And Sunflower Fields, Scott J. Werner, H. Jeffrey Homan, Michael L. Avery, George M. Linz, Eric A. Tillman, Anthony A. Slowik, Robert J. Byrd, Thomas M. Primus, Margaret J. Goodall Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Bird Shield As A Blackbird Repellent In Ripening Rice And Sunflower Fields, Scott J. Werner, H. Jeffrey Homan, Michael L. Avery, George M. Linz, Eric A. Tillman, Anthony A. Slowik, Robert J. Byrd, Thomas M. Primus, Margaret J. Goodall

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical repellents sometimes can provide a nonlethal alternative for reducing wildlife impacts to agricultural production. In late summer and autumn 2002, we evaluated Bird Shield™ (active ingredient: methyl anthranilate, Bird Shield Repellent Corporation, Spokane, Wash.) as a blackbird (Icteridae) repellent in Missouri rice fields and North Dakota sunflower fields. We selected 5 pairs of ripening rice fields in southeastern Missouri and randomly allocated treatments (treated and control) within pairs. The repellent was aerially applied by fixed-winged aircraft at the recommended label rate and volume (1.17 L Bird Shield/ha and 46.7 L/ha, respectively); 1 field received 2X the label rate. We …

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of ditches in the Missouri River floodplain in southwestern Iowa and northwestern Missouri resulted in the recovery of nine unionid mollusk species. The floodplain ditches may provide valuable habitat for mussels in a region that has suffered a tremendous decrease in productive aquatic habitats over the past sixty-eight years. Additional survey activity is needed to determine the complete inventory of unionid mollusks in the area.

"Dragonslaying." Review Of Democracy Defended, By G. Mackie, Donald J. Herzog Jan 2005

"Dragonslaying." Review Of Democracy Defended, By G. Mackie, Donald J. Herzog

Reviews

Early in the Iliad, the Achaians convene an assembly. There are a lot of them and they're unruly, too. "[Tihe place of their assembly was shaken, and the earth groaned / as the people took their positions and there was tumult. Nine heralds / shouting set about putting them in order, to make them cease their / clamour and listen to the kings beloved of Zeus."' Clutching the scepter that has come to him ultimately from Zeus, the very symbol of his right to speak and be heard, Agamemnon bitterly proposes that the Achaians give up. Nine years of struggle …

Screening Historical Sexualities: A Roundtable On Sodomy, South Africa, And Proteus, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2005

Screening Historical Sexualities: A Roundtable On Sodomy, South Africa, And Proteus, Noa Ben-Asher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Proteus (2003; 100 min., Canada and South Africa) is a low-budget feature film, directed by John Greyson (Toronto) and Jack Lewis (Cape Town), that made the international rounds of “art cinema” and queer festivals in 2003 and 2004, with limited theatrical release in New York, Toronto, and other cities. The film advances Greyson’s and Lewis’s experiments with political essay-narrative forms both in their respective documentary, experimental, and dramatic videos dating back to the early 1980s (including Lewis’s Apostles of Civilized Vice [1999]) and in Greyson’s theatrical feature films beginning with Urinal in 1988. Based on an early-eighteenth-century court record, Proteus …

Confrontation After Crawford, Richard D. Friedman Jan 2005

Confrontation After Crawford, Richard D. Friedman

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

The following edited excerpt, drawn from "The Confrontation Clause Re-Rooted and Transformed", 2003-04 Cato Supreme Court Review 439 (2004), by Law School Professor Richard D. Friedman, discusses the impact, effects, and questions generated by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Crawford v. Washington last year that a defendant is entitled to confront and cross-examine any testimonial statement presented against him. In Crawford, the defendant, charged with attacking another man with a knife, contested the trial court's admission of a tape-recorded statement his wife made to police without giivng him the opportunity to cross-examine. The trial court admitted the statement, and …

Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene Jan 2005

Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

The disparity between what the Constitution permits of public schools and what Title IX permits of private ones is unquestionably stark. This Article calls this disparity into question. First, it asks under what circumstances, if any, allowance for sex discrimination in athletics may be justified under constitutional standards. Then, it considers the practical relevance of the disparity between how a school may lawfully discriminate under Title IX and how it may do so under the Equal Protection Clause. Finally, it offers a prescription for bringing into balance the gender equity messages sent by Title IX and the Constitution.

The Passage Of Community Property Laws, 1939-1947: Was "More Than Money" Involved?, Jennifer E. Sturiale Jan 2005

The Passage Of Community Property Laws, 1939-1947: Was "More Than Money" Involved?, Jennifer E. Sturiale

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Part I of this article reviews the legal landscape that provided the backdrop against which Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania later adopted community property laws. It also examines the tax consequences of the two Supreme Court cases, Lucas v. Earl and Poe v. Seaborn, that resulted in the disparate tax treatment of married couples in common law and community property law states. Part II briefly reviews the subsequent passage of community property laws by Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania; the passage of a federal tax reduction bill that provided for equal treatment of community property law and …

Be Reasonable! Thoughts On The Effectiveness Of State Criticism In Enforcing International Law, Michael Y. Kieval Jan 2005

Be Reasonable! Thoughts On The Effectiveness Of State Criticism In Enforcing International Law, Michael Y. Kieval

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note examines the effectiveness of diplomatic criticism in enforcing international law, particularly in the counter-terrorism (or anti-insurgency) context. It is not concerned with determining what international law does or does not "in fact" allow States to do in combating terrorism and other existential threats.
