Habitat And Nesting Of Le Conte's Sparrows In The Northern Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Jill A. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson, Therese M. Donovan, W. Daniel Svedarsky, Peter W. Jones, Betty R. Euliss

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

ABSTRACT. Little is known about the breeding biology of the Le Conte's Sparrow (Ammodramus leconteil), probably because of its secretive nature. We provide new information on several aspects of Le Conte's Sparrow breeding biology, including rates of nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and potential factors affecting breeding densities and nesting success of the species. Our study was conducted in the tallgrass prairie of northwestern Minnesota and southeastern North Dakota during 1998-2002. Breeding densities varied among years, but this variation was not clearly linked to climatic patterns. Vegetation had some influence on densities of Le …

Novel Plasmodium Vivax Dhfr Alleles From The Indonesian Archipelago And Papua New Guinea: Association With Pyrimethamine Resistance Determined By A Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Expression System, Michele D. Hastings, Jason D. Maguire, Michael J. Bangs, Peter A. Zimmerman, John C. Reeder, J. Kevin Baird, Carol Hopkins Sibley

United States Navy: Publications

In plasmodia, the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) enzyme is the target of the pyrimethamine component of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (S/P). Plasmodium vivax infections are not treated intentionally with antifolates. However, outside Africa, coinfections with Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax are common, and P. vivax infections are often exposed to S/P. Cloning of the P. vivax dhfr gene has allowed molecular comparisons of dhfr alleles from different regions. Examination of the dhfr locus from a few locations has identified a very diverse set of alleles and showed that mutant alleles of the vivax dhfr gene are prevalent in Southeast Asia where S/P has been …

The Irbesartan In Heart Failure With Preserved Systolic Function (I-Preserve) Trial: Rationale And Design, Peter Carson, Barry M. Massie, Robert Mckelvie, John Mcmurray, Michel Komajda, Michael Zile, Agata Ptaszynska, Gerald Frangin Jan 2005

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background:

Although 40% to 50% of patients with chronic heart failure (HF) have relatively preserved systolic function (PSF), few trials have been conducted in this population and treatment guidelines do not include evidence-based recommendations.

Methods and Results:

The Irbesartan in Heart Failure with Preserved Systolic Function (I-PRESERVE) is enrolling 4100 subjects with HF-PSF to evaluate whether 300 mg irbesartan is superior to placebo in reducing mortality and prespecified categories of cardiovascular hospitalizations. The principal inclusion criteria are age ≥60 years, heart failure symptoms, an ejection fraction ≥45%, and either hospitalization for heart failure within 6 months or corroborative evidence …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Colored Light As An Attractant For Female Aedes Aegypti, Aedes Albopictus, Anopheles Quadrimaculatus, And Culex Nigripalpus, Douglas A. Burkett, Jerry F. Butler

United States Air Force: Publications

Mosquito feeding activity was monitored in an electronic apparatus (visualometer), having ten ports, illuminated from below with narrow bandwidths of light (700, 650, 600, 550, 500, 450, 400, or 350 nm). Responses of adult female Aedes albopictus Skuse, Ae. aegypti (L.), Anopheles quadrimaculatus, Say and Culex nigripalpus Theobald to feeding stations (blood containers) over each light port. No-light and broad spectrum white light were used as controls. Color preferences were based on electronic detection of feeding times. Aedes aegypti showed no significant feeding preferences over any of the colors. Conversely, Ae. albopictus, An. quadrimaculatus, and Cx. nigripalpus showed …

Exploring The Teen Efl Classroom: The Students, Their Teachers, And The Tangles Of Dealing With Discipline And Motivation, Anna Burbridge Jan 2005

Exploring The Teen Efl Classroom: The Students, Their Teachers, And The Tangles Of Dealing With Discipline And Motivation, Anna Burbridge

MA TESOL Collection

This paper discusses specific elements of teaching teens in an EFL context, in particular the areas of teen motivation and discipline. This was a teacher’s development project involving six teachers (including the writer), and lasting for one semester in a Brazilian bi-national language institute. The project was built on videotaped class observations, readings, group meetings, and journal writings. The result was a deeper reflection into the developmental stage dubbed “teenhood”, followed by subsequent considerations of motivation and discipline of teen groups, the role of the teen teacher, the importance of knowing and connecting with the inner teacher, and practical implications …

Constructing The Well Qualified Chartered Accountant In England And Wales, Malcolm Anderson, John Richard Edwards, Roy A. Chandler Jan 2005

Constructing The Well Qualified Chartered Accountant In England And Wales, Malcolm Anderson, John Richard Edwards, Roy A. Chandler

Accounting Historians Journal

Fundamental to the pursuit of the professional project by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), in the early years of its existence, was the construction of the well qualified chartered accountant. This involved the introduction of onerous examinations, lengthy vocational training and significant financial hurdles, which together confined membership to the wealthier sections of society. Prior studies concentrate on the external implications of the ICAEW's policies, and have accepted, though left unexamined, the significance of entry hurdles in achieving exclusionary closure. The major focus of this paper is to examine how the ICAEW differentiated its membership …

Particulate Matter Exposure Impairs Systemic Microvascular Endothelium-Dependent Dilation, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Mark Barger, Vincent Castranova, Matthew A. Boegehold Jan 2005

Particulate Matter Exposure Impairs Systemic Microvascular Endothelium-Dependent Dilation, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Mark Barger, Vincent Castranova, Matthew A. Boegehold

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Acute exposure to airborne pollutants, such as solid particulate matter (PM), increases the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction, but the mechanisms by which PM evokes systemic effects remain to be identified. The purpose of this study was to determine if pulmonary exposure to a PM surrogate, such as residual oil fly ash (ROFA), affects endothelium-dependent dilation in the systemic microcirculation. Rats were intratracheally instilled with ROFA at 0.1, 0.25, 1 or 2 mg/rat 24 hr before experimental measurements. Rats intratracheally instilled with saline or titanium dioxide (0.25 mg/rat) served as vehicle or particle control groups, respectively. In vivo microscopy of the …
