Pathologies Affecting Reef Corals At The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Eric H. Borneman, Gerard M. Wellington
Pathologies Affecting Reef Corals At The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Eric H. Borneman, Gerard M. Wellington
Gulf of Mexico Science
The Flower Garden Banks are high-latitude reefs consisting of coral caps on the top of salt domes in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Limited studies to date report low incidence of coral disease on these reefs. Surveys were conducted to document the extent of coral diseases throughout the Flower Garden Banks, including types of disease present, species affected, percentage of recent colony mortality, cases of "false" disease, and descriptions of new pathologies. Very few of the known (or reported) Western Atlantic diseases were found, and they occurred at extremely low frequencies. Tissue-skeletal anomalies were common. Several conditions resembled known diseases, …

Tight Temporal Consistency Of Coral Mass Spawning At The Flower Garden Banks, Gulf Of Mexico, From 1997-2003, Peter D. Vize, John A. Embesi, Mike Nickell, D. Paul Brown, Derek K. Hagman
Gulf of Mexico Science
Mass spawning by the hard corals of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary has been studied for over a decade. In this report we present observations by a single set of experienced observers on spawning events extending over seven years, on spawning activity, lack of activity and coordination within and between species. This compilation shows that the spawning times of each species are extremely consistent during major events, with onset and hiatus often predictable to within seven minutes, and in some species to within two minutes. In addition to the extraordinary degree of temporal regulation, the other striking feature …

Site Specificity And The Impact Of Recreational Fishing Activity On Subadult Endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles In Estuarine Foraging Habitats In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Anne Rudloe, Jack Rudloe
Gulf of Mexico Science
Eighty-nine subadult Kemp's ridley sea turtles, Lepidochelys kempii, captured incidentally to recreational or commercial fishing, were tagged and released between 1991 and 2003. Of 105 captures and recaptures, 74 were by recreational hook and line, 20 were by commercial trawling, and 11 were by other means. Captures ranged from 3 to 25 per year. Ten turtles were recaptured once and two were recaptured three times. Times from release to recapture ranged from 3 wk to 20 mo. Three head-started turtles from Padre Island, Texas were taken after being at large for 13 to 30 mo. Head-started turtles are hatched …
Characterizing Bull Shark (Carcharhinus Leucas) Assemblages Near The Sabine Pass Inlet, Jennifer Brooke Shipley
Characterizing Bull Shark (Carcharhinus Leucas) Assemblages Near The Sabine Pass Inlet, Jennifer Brooke Shipley
Gulf of Mexico Science
The developmental stages of bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) life history and the impact of selected environmental variables on the utilization of a Gulf of Mexico habitat by this species were characterized during late spring through summer 1992-1999, Entanglement nets 91.4 min length of varying depth (2.40--4.88 m) and mesh sizes (12.7-25.4 em) were deployed adjacent to jetty and beachfront sites near Sabine Pass. Bull sharks (N = 720) were incidentally captured as part of a study to monitor the population of Ridley sea turtles. The bull shark bycatch portion of the parent study data was expanded in 1997-1999 …

Cetacean Strandings On The Southwestern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Alejandro Ortega-Argueta, Clara E. Pérez-Sánchez, Giberth Gordillo-Morales, Omar G. Gordillo, Daniel G. Pérez, Héctor Alafita
Gulf of Mexico Science
A total of 21 reports of cetacean strandings on the coast of Veracruz, Mexico were obtained from interviews and monitoring efforts carried out through surveys conducted by walking along the beach between July 1993 and June 1994, Skeletal remains and recently documented stranding events in scientific and private collections were also collected. Identified species belong to four families: Balaenopteridae, Physeteridae, Kogiidae, and Delphinidae. Nineteen animals were identified to species level. Additionally, a single baleen whale photo was identified only as a Balaenopteridae whale and a single vertebra was recorded as a Delphinidae vertebra because of lack of more conclusive evidence. …

Seasonal Variation In Fish Assemblages Within The Estuarine Portions Of The Myakka And Peace Rivers, Southwest Florida, Charles F. Idelberger, Marin F.D. Greenwood
Gulf of Mexico Science
Juvenile and small adult fish were sampled monthly from 1996 to 2002 in the estuarine portions of the Myakka and Peace rivers, at the northern end of Charlotte Harbor (a relatively pristine estuarine system in southwest Florida). We provide a detailed description of the fish faunas in these areas, including seasonal assemblage structure. Seasonal cycles in assemblage structure were evident. Nearshore (to ~5 m) fish assemblages sampled by seine were separated into three main seasonal groups by cluster analysis (January-April, May-September, September-January). The ichthyofauna collected from deeper (≥1.8 m) areas by otter trawl formed two seasonal groups (June-October and November-March). …

Peracarid Crustaceans Of Central Laguna Madre Tamaulipas In The Southwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Everardo Barba, Alberto J. Sánchez
Gulf of Mexico Science
A total of 6,734 of peracarid crustaceans belonging to 3 orders (Amphipoda, Mysidacea, and Isopoda), 17 families, 25 genera, and 30 species were recorded in the central region of Laguna Madre. The Amphipoda constituted 58% of total density (ind/m2), whereas the Mysidacea and lsopoda represented 29 and 13%, respectively. The amphipods Cymadusa compta and Elasmopus levis, and the isopod Harrieta faxoni were the numerically dominant species. The maximum density values were recorded in submersed aquatic vegetation and sites close to the channels during the "norther" season, when the water temperature decreased.

Cannibalism Of Juveniles By Adult Common Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis), A.J. Adams, R.K. Wolfe
Gulf of Mexico Science
Cannibalism is probably common to many fish species, but has been documented for relatively few. This study provides the first documentation of intercohort cannibalism (juveniles cannibalized by adults) for common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, all instances of which occurred in putative nursery habitats.

Can University/Community Collaboration Create Spaces For Aboriginal Reconciliation? Case Study Of The Healing Of The Seven Generations And Four Directions Community Projects And Wilfrid Laurier University, Ginette Lafrenière, Lamine Diallo, Donna Dubie, Lou Henry
Business Technology Management
In this article, the authors attempt to illustrate how two Aboriginal community-based projects were conceptualized and developed through the collaborative efforts of four individuals who believed in the merits of a project aimed at survivors and intergenerational survivors of the residential school system as well as Aboriginal people in trouble with the law. Drawing upon a small body of literature on university/community collaboration, the authors illustrate the importance of meaningful collaboration between universities and communities in order to enhance a mutually beneficial relationship conducive to community-engaged scholarship. Through an examination of the case study of the Healing of The Seven …
