Learning The Wrong Lessons From "An American Tragedy", David Bernstein Nov 2005

Learning The Wrong Lessons From "An American Tragedy", David Bernstein

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This paper is a critique of Margaret Berger and Aaron Twerski, “Uncertainty and Informed Choice: Unmasking Daubert,” forthcoming in the Michigan Law Review. Berger and Twerski propose that courts recognize a cause of action that would allow plaintiffs who claim injury from pharmaceutical products, but who do not have sufficient evidence to prove causation, to recover damages for deprivation of informed choice. Berger and Twerski claim inspiration from the litigation over allegations that the morning sickness drug Bendectin caused birth defects.

Considering the criteria Berger and Twerski suggest for their proposed cause of action in the context of Bendectin, it …

Assessment Of Chenopodium Quinoa Willd. Genetic Diversity In The Usda And Cip-Fao Collections Using Ssr?S And Snp?S, Shawn A. Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a staple grain for the indigenous people of the Andean region of South America with excellent nutritional qualities, including protein content. The objective of this study is to report on the development of fluorescence-tagged simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to (1) genetically characterize the inherent diversity of 152 accessions of C. quinoa; (2) determine to what degree the CIP-FAO collection represents the range of genetic diversity in quinoa; and (3) test four hypotheses regarding quinoa?s center of diversity, Highland and Lowland clustering patterns, origin of Lowland varieties, and the …

Mammalian Micrornas: A Small World For Fine-Tuning Gene Expression, Cinzia Sevignani, George A. Calin, Linda D. Siracusa, Carlo M. Croce

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The basis of eukaryotic complexity is an intricate genetic architecture where parallel systems are involved in tuning gene expression, via RNA-DNA, RNA-RNA and RNA-protein and DNA-protein interactions. In higher organisms, about 97% of the transcriptional output is represented by non-coding RNA (ncRNA) encompassing not only rRNA, tRNA, introns, 5’ and 3’-untranslated regions, transposable elements and intergenic regions, but also a large rapidly emerging family, named microRNAs. MicroRNAs are short 20-22 nucleotide RNA molecules that have been shown to regulate the expression of other genes in a variety of eukaryotic systems. MicroRNAs are formed from larger transcripts that fold to produce …

Applications Of Phylogenetics To Issues In Freshwater Crayfish Biology, Keith A. Crandall Nov 2005

Applications Of Phylogenetics To Issues In Freshwater Crayfish Biology, Keith A. Crandall

Faculty Publications

Freshwater crayfish have served as model organisms for over 125 years in scientific research, from areas such as neurobiology and vision research to conservation biology and evolution. Recently, evolutionary histories in the form of phylogenies have served as a critical foundation for testing hypotheses in such diverse research areas as well. In this article, I review the amazing diversity of freshwater crayfish, especially in a phylogenetic context and explore how these evolutionary histories have informed crayfish biology and can be used powerfully in the future to guide research in a diversity of areas. Throughout the article, I draw on examples …

Livestock, Liberalization, And Democracy: Constraints And Opportunities For Rural Livestock Producers In Reforming Uganda, Robin L. Turner Nov 2005

Livestock, Liberalization, And Democracy: Constraints And Opportunities For Rural Livestock Producers In Reforming Uganda, Robin L. Turner

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This paper explores the policy environment surrounding livestock policy improvements in Uganda, a country that has undergone substantial reforms in the last 15 years. It aims to identify opportunities for pro-poor interventions—reforms that would improve the livelihoods of poor rural livestock producers. Towards this end, the paper reviews challenges facing for livestock producers and analyzes the broad political economic context in which livestock sector dynamics are situated. The adoption and implementation of pro-poor livestock sector interventions are in some ways constrained and, in others, enabled by civil conflict in several parts of the country, the semi-authoritarian nature of the Museveni …
