Ecological Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes Susceptible To Oil Spills In Casco Bay, Maine, Pamela A. Morgan, Michele Dionne, Richard Mackenzie, Lucas Curci Feb 2005

Ecological Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes Susceptible To Oil Spills In Casco Bay, Maine, Pamela A. Morgan, Michele Dionne, Richard Mackenzie, Lucas Curci

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Casco Bay is the largest oil port in Maine and northern New England, handling over 20 million tons of crude oil and oil products annually. The susceptibility of the Bay’s estuarine habitats, especially its fringing salt marshes, to potential spill events was the impetus for this study. Although much has been learned to date about the effects of oil spills on estuarine habitats around the world, there is a real need for site-specific knowledge of the structures and functions of local habitats so that resource managers can be prepared in the event of a spill. Our study focused specifically on …

Immunological Assessment Of An Insecticide Resistance-Associated Esterase In The Western Corn Rootworm, Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf, Lance J. Meinke, Laurence D. Chandler, Blair D. Siegfried Feb 2005

Immunological Assessment Of An Insecticide Resistance-Associated Esterase In The Western Corn Rootworm, Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf, Lance J. Meinke, Laurence D. Chandler, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

In previous investigations, we have determined that organophosphate resistance in the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is at least partially attributed to a group of non-specific carboxylesterases referred to as group II. Antiserum raised against a purified 66-kDa group II esterase is specific for the denatured enzyme. This antiserum reacts similarly with both beetle homogenates from resistant and susceptible populations, although there is much higher signal intensity in immunoblots of resistant relative to susceptible beetles. These results suggest that overproduction of group II esterases is the underlying basis of esterase-mediated resistance in D. v. virgifera by demonstrating that …

Methods For Simultaneous Control Of Lignin Content And Composition, And Cellulose Content In Plants, Vincent Lee C. Chiang, Laigeng Li Feb 2005

Methods For Simultaneous Control Of Lignin Content And Composition, And Cellulose Content In Plants, Vincent Lee C. Chiang, Laigeng Li

Michigan Tech Patents

The present invention relates to a method of concurrently introducing multiple genes into plants and trees is provided. The method includes simultaneous transformation of plants with multiple genes from the phenylpropanoid pathways including 4CL, CAld5H, AldOMT, SAD and CAD genes and combinations thereof to produce various lines of transgenic plants displaying altered agronomic traits. The agronomic traits of the plants are regulated by the orientation of the specific genes and the selected gene combinations, which are incorporated into the plant genome.

Genetic Variance And Covariance Patterns For Body Weight And Energy Balance Characters In An Advanced Intercross Population Of Mice, Larry J. Leamy, Kari Elo, Merlyn K. Nielsen, L. Dale Van Vleck, Daniel Pomp Feb 2005

Genetic Variance And Covariance Patterns For Body Weight And Energy Balance Characters In An Advanced Intercross Population Of Mice, Larry J. Leamy, Kari Elo, Merlyn K. Nielsen, L. Dale Van Vleck, Daniel Pomp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

We estimated heritabilities and genetic correlations for a suite of 15 characters in five functional groups in an advanced intercross population of over 2000 mice derived from a cross of inbred lines selected for high and low heat loss. Heritabilities averaged 0.56 for three body weights, 0.23 for two energy balance characters, 0.48 for three bone characters, 0.35 for four measures of adiposity, and 0.27 for three organ weights, all of which were generally consistent in magnitude with estimates derived in previous studies. Genetic correlations varied from −0.65 to +0.98, and were higher within these functional groups than between groups. …

Entertainment Psychology: Bypassing Treatment Resistance In Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent Males, Ryan Coon Feb 2005

Entertainment Psychology: Bypassing Treatment Resistance In Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent Males, Ryan Coon

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Emotionally-disturbed adolescent males, particularly those diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, are notoriously resistant to traditional forms of psychotherapy. Simultaneously, adolescent males are the target market for entertainment companies that produce products via multiple entertainment venues (e.g., comic books, card games, and video games). This dissertation is the first step in synthesizing psychotherapy with entertainment venues in order to bypass treatment resistance in emotionally-disturbed adolescent males. The entertainment venue of focus for this dissertation is a comic book series. The goal of the comic books is to entertain while promoting therapeutic healing. The therapeutic value entails having multiple …

Production Of Ammonia By Tritrichomonas Foetus And Trichomonas Vaginalis, Yekaterina Kleydman, Nigel Yarlett, Thomas Gorrell Feb 2005

Production Of Ammonia By Tritrichomonas Foetus And Trichomonas Vaginalis, Yekaterina Kleydman, Nigel Yarlett, Thomas Gorrell

Honors College Theses

Production of ammonia is difficult to find among the various studies of amino acid metabolism in protozoa. Several studies suggest that catabolism of arginine to ammonium is important for the growth of trichomonads. Trichomonads are amitochondriate zooflagellates that thrive under microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions. We were able to detect accumulation of ammonium ions and ammonia in cultures of Tritrichomonas foetus and Trichomonas vaginalis including those resistant to metronidazole. Ammonium ions and ammonia were detected using the indophenol colorimetric method. Aerobic overnight cultures had 0.9 mM of soluble ammonium (NH4+ and NH3) or a 20% greater concentration of ammonium relative to …
