County Level Predictors Of Homicide And Suicide In The State Of Florida, Kelly K. Browning Mar 2005

County Level Predictors Of Homicide And Suicide In The State Of Florida, Kelly K. Browning

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study expands the range of theoretical perspectives and empirical questions that have occupied the recent literature on homicide and suicide. The study examines county-level predictors for homicide and suicide in all sixty-seven counties in Florida. The current examination identifies which county-level variables are most closely related to each other, which variables explain the greatest amount of differences within the Florida counties, as well as which variables are most significantly correlated with the homicide and sucide rate by county. Additionally, the variables included in the present research are driven by the theorectical perspectives of social disorganization and anomie/strain theory. …

Flow Pattern Visualization In A Mimic Anaerobic Digester Using Cfd, Mehul S. Vesvikar, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan Mar 2005

Flow Pattern Visualization In A Mimic Anaerobic Digester Using Cfd, Mehul S. Vesvikar, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three-Dimensional Steady-State Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulations Were Performed in Mimic Anaerobic Digesters to Visualize their Flow Pattern and Obtain Hydrodynamic Parameters. the Mixing in the Digester Was Provided by Sparging Gas at Three Different Flow Rates. the Gas Phase Was Simulated with Air and the Liquid Phase with Water. the CFD Results Were First Evaluated using Experimental Data Obtained by Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT). the Simulation Results in Terms of overall Flow Pattern, Location of Circulation Cells and Stagnant Regions, Trends of Liquid Velocity Profiles, and Volume of Dead Zones Agree Reasonably Well with the Experimental Data. …

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2005 Interagency Annual Report

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) population in the Northern Rocky Mountain (NRM) states (Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming) continued to increase in distribution and abundance (Figure 1, Tables 4a, 4b). Estimates of wolf numbers at the end of 2005 were 565 wolves in the Central Idaho Recovery Area (CID), 325 in the Greater Yellowstone Recovery Area (GYA), and 130 in the Northwest Montana Recovery Area (NWMT) for a total of 1,020 wolves (Figure 1, Table 4a). By state boundaries, there were an estimated 512 wolves in the state of Idaho, 252 in Wyoming and 256 in Montana (Table 4b). …

Dynamic Response Indicators Of Heat Stress In Shaded And Non-Shaded Feedlot Cattle, Part 1: Analyses Of Indicators, T. M. Brown-Brandl, R. A. Eigenberg, J. A. Nienaber, G. Leroy Hahn Mar 2005

Dynamic Response Indicators Of Heat Stress In Shaded And Non-Shaded Feedlot Cattle, Part 1: Analyses Of Indicators, T. M. Brown-Brandl, R. A. Eigenberg, J. A. Nienaber, G. Leroy Hahn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Heat stress in feedlot cattle can cause decreases in feed intake and growth, and in extreme cases may result in death. Providing shade during hot weather has shown inconsistent results, reducing direct and indirect losses in some areas of the United States, but not in others. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the dynamic responses of feedlot cattle to environmental conditions with and without access to shade, and to determine the most appropriate physiological measurement for monitoring feedlot cattle during hot weather as a guide for improved management. Eight crossbred steers (initially weighing 294.7±10.8 kg) were randomly assigned …

The Irrational Supreme Court, Michael I. Meyerson Mar 2005

The Irrational Supreme Court, Michael I. Meyerson

ExpressO

Abstract: The Irrational Supreme Court

The pejorative “irrational” is used to describe many defects in legal reasoning, but is generally not meant to be understood as a literal lack of rational thinking. Similarly, the “rational basis test” is not meant to determine whether a legislature is “not endowed with reason or understanding,” but rather if it has acted with some hidden, invidious motive. Incredibly, though, the Supreme Court has frequently issued truly “irrational opinions,” simply due to the fundamental nature of group decision-making.

Much has been written about Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow’s “Impossibility Theorem,” which proved that, when faced …

The Byronic Myth In Brazil: Cultural Perspectives On Lord Byron's Image In Brazilian Romanticism, Matthew Lorin Squires Mar 2005

The Byronic Myth In Brazil: Cultural Perspectives On Lord Byron's Image In Brazilian Romanticism, Matthew Lorin Squires

Theses and Dissertations

Byron's reception in one of the nineteenth century's largest and most culturally significant post-colonial outposts, Brazil, has been virtually ignored in English studies. The implications of Lord Byron's influence in Brazil are extensive since he was overwhelmingly popular among poets but also subversive to the nationalistic aims of Brazilian Romanticism. Nearly all of the well known Brazilian Romantics were not only influenced by him, but translated him. Their notion of what it meant to be "Byronic," however, differed from ideas held in Europe. The Brazilian Byronic hero was more extreme, macabre, and sentimental, lonelier, darker, and deadlier. Byron had various …

The Ethics Of Cause Lawyering: An Examination Of Criminal Defense Lawyers As Cause Lawyers, Margareth Etienne Mar 2005

The Ethics Of Cause Lawyering: An Examination Of Criminal Defense Lawyers As Cause Lawyers, Margareth Etienne

ExpressO

Criminal defense attorneys are often motivated by an intricate set of moral and ideological principles that belie their reputations as amoral (if not immoral) “hired guns” who would do anything to get their guilty clients off. Using empirical data from interviews with forty criminal defense attorneys I explore the motivations that inform their decisions to enter the field of criminal defense and the values that influence the manner in which they do their jobs. I conclude that many criminal defense attorneys are in fact cause lawyers who are committed to individual clients but also the “cause” of legal reform in …
