27 | Shoham (North): Late Chalcolithic Burial Caves In The Lod Valley, Israel, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink, Ram Gophna
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
The IAA salvage excavations at Shoham in the Lod Valley revealed four interconnected karstic caves that were used for burial as well as domestic purposes during the Chalcolithic period and the Early Bronze Age I and Intermediate Bronze Age. They are part of an entire system of cemeteries located within the karstic caves in the limestone foothills of the region. The finds include rich assemblages of burial goods, particularly the ceramic ossuaries of the Chalcolithic period. The finds enable a better understanding of Chalcolithic mortuary behavior in the region, and the relationship between the settlements and the cemeteries––the living and …

Social Preferences In Small‐Scale Societies, Alexander J. Field
Social Preferences In Small‐Scale Societies, Alexander J. Field
Economics
This volume reports on a cross‐cultural investigation of social preferences in 15 small‐scale, non‐Western societies. Participants from all 15 groups played the ultimatum game with members of their own culture; subjects from a subset also played dictator and voluntary contribution to public goods games. The bulk of the book (Chapters 4 through 14) consists of reports by the field workers (mostly anthropologists). Each chapter includes ethnographic information, a description of how members of the group make their living, details on the experimental protocols and results, and some discussion. Although none of the results are consistent with the predictions of the …

Assessing The Biological Weapons And Bioterrorism Threat, Milton Leitenberg Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
It is nearly 15 years since biological weapons (BW) have become a significant national security preoccupation. This occurred primarily due to circumstances occurring within a short span of years. First was the official U.S. Government suggestion that proliferation of offensive BW programs among states and even terrorist groups was an increasing trend; second was the discovery, between 1989 and 1992, that the Union USSR had violated the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) since its ratification in 1975 by building a massive covert biological weapons program; third was the corroboration by the UN Special Commission in 1995 that Iraq had maintained a …

Rdr6 Has A Broad-Spectrum But Temperature-Dependent Antiviral Defense Role In Nicotiana Benthamiana, Feng Qu, Xiaohong Ye, Guichuan Hou, Shirley Sato, Thomas E. Clemente, Thomas Jack Morris
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
SDE1/SGS2/RDR6, a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) from Arabidopsis thaliana, has previously been found to be indispensable for maintaining the posttranscriptional silencing of transgenes, but it is seemingly redundant for antiviral defense. To elucidate the antiviral role of this RdRP in a different host plant and to evaluate whether plant growth conditions affect its role, we down-regulated expression of the Nicotiana benthamiana homolog, NbRDR6, and examined the plants for altered susceptibility to various viruses at different growth temperatures. The results we describe here clearly show that plants with reduced expression of NbRDR6 were more susceptible to all viruses tested …

Different Catalytic Mechanisms In Mammalian Selenocysteine- And Cysteine-Containing Methionine-R-Sulfoxide Reductases, Hwa-Young Kim, Vadim Gladyshev
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
Selenocysteine (Sec) is found in active sites of several oxidoreductases in which this residue is essential for catalytic activity. However, many selenoproteins have fully functional orthologs, wherein cysteine (Cys) occupies the position of Sec. The reason why some enzymes evolve into selenoproteins if the Cys versions may be sufficient is not understood. Among three mammalian methionine-R-sulfoxide reductases (MsrBs), MsrB1 is a Sec-containing protein, whereas MsrB2 and MsrB3 contain Cys in the active site, making these enzymes an excellent system for addressing the question of why Sec is used in biological systems. In this study, we found that residues, which are …

Ethical Guidelines In Genetics And Genomics. An Islamic Perspective, Aida I. Al-Aqeel
Saudi Medical Journal
We are at a time of unprecedented increase in knowledge of rapidly changing technology. Such biotechnology especially when it involves human subjects raises complex ethical, legal, social and religious issues. A World Health Organization expert consultation concluded that "genetics advances will only be acceptable if their application is carried out ethically, with due regard to autonomy, justice, education and the beliefs and resources of each nation and community." Public health authorities are increasingly concerned by the high rate of births with genetic disorders especially in developing countries where Muslims are a majority. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize the available …

This study assessed rates of imaginal exposure therapy (ET) utilization and completion of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a clinical setting and examined variables associated with CBT completion. Using a clinical definition, the completion rate of CBT was markedly lower than rates reported in randomized trials. CBT completion was inversely related to severity of overall pretreatment measures of PTSD, avoidance, hyperarousal, depression, impaired social functioning, and borderline personality disorder. Regression yielded avoidance and depression as unique predictors of completion. Most dropouts occurred before starting imaginal ET, although initiating ET was associated with greater likelihood of …

Effects Of Common Forage Phenolic Acids On Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Viability In Bovine Feces, J. E. Wells, E. D. Berry, V.H. Varel
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Ruminant animals are carriers of Escherichia coli O157:H7, and the transmission of E. coli O157:H7 from cattle to the environment and to humans is a concern. It is unclear if diet can influence the survivability of E. coliO157:H7 in the gastrointestinal system or in feces in the environment. Feces from cattle fed bromegrass hay or corn silage diets were inoculated with E. coliO157:H7, and the survival of this pathogen was analyzed. When animals consumed bromegrass hay for <1 month, viable E. coliO157:H7 was not recovered after 28 days postinoculation, but when animals consumed the diet for >1 month, E. coli …1>

Disentangling Above‐ And Below‐Ground Competition Between Lianas And Trees In A Tropical Forest, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Mirjam E. Kuzee, Frans Bongers
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
- Light is thought to be the most limiting resource in tropical forests, and thus above‐ground competition is commonly accepted as the mechanism that structures these communities. In many tropical forests, trees compete not only with other trees, but also with lianas, which compete aggressively for below‐ground resources and thus may limit tree growth and regeneration.
- Using a replicated experiment, we tested the relative strengths of above‐ and below‐ground competition from lianas on tree saplings in a disturbed forest in Côte d’Ivoire with a heterogeneous canopy and relatively high light penetration. We planted seedlings of three tree species and subjected them …

A Macroscopic Study Of The Cranial Vena Cava In Lylei’S Flying Foxes, Pawana Uthaichotiwan, Sirinush Sricharoenvej
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A macroscopic study revealed that a double cranial vena cava was present in fifteen, adult, Lylei’s flying foxes, of both sexes. It consisted of right and left branches, without forming a left brachiocephalic vein. However, both of them drained blood into the right atrium. The right cranial vena cava drained blood directly into the right atrium. The left cranial vena cava drained blood into the coronary sinus before returning blood into the right atrium. The right cranial vena cava was larger than the left one. The opening of the left cranial vena cava at the right atrium was lower than …

Pubic Symphysiodesis For The Optional Treatment Of Canine Hip Dysplasia, Kanyada Mangklapruk, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Atichat Brahmasa
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Pubic symphysiodesis (PS) using a bone plate and screws was performed in 10 hip dysplastic dogs, diagnosed following clinical and radiographic evaluation. After resection of the cranial third of the pubic symphysis, the rest of the symphysis was fixed by a dynamic compression plate and screws. Animal gait, Norberg angle (NA), dorsal acetabular rim slope (DARS) and dorsal acetabular rim angle (DARA) were radiographically evaluated before, immedimtely after, and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. NA and DAR of all dogs were significantly (p<0.05) greater than the preoperative values, while DARS was less than the preoperative value. After surgery, 75% of the hip joints had no Ortolani signs, while all dogs regained normal gait within one week of the operation.

Regulation By Adaptive Management--Is It Possible?, J.B. Ruhl
Regulation By Adaptive Management--Is It Possible?, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Today's voluminous literature on adaptive management traces its roots to Professor C.S. Holling's seminal work, Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management. Although almost thirty years have passed since he and his colleagues first described the adaptive management methodology, no work on the topic has improved on their core theory. Its essence is an iterative, incremental decisionmaking process built around a continuous process of monitoring the effects of decisions and adjusting decisions accordingly. It is in other words, far more suited to the needs of future regulatory challenges than is prescriptive regulation. My focus, however, is not on what adaptive management should …

Genetic And Molecular Analysis Of Phytochromes From The Filamentous Fungus Neurospora Crassa, Allan C. Froehlich, Bosl Noh, Richard D. Vierstra, Jennifer Loros, Jay C. Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
Phytochromes (Phys) comprise a superfamily of red-/far-red-light-sensing proteins. Whereas higher-plant Phys that control numerous growth and developmental processes have been well described, the biochemical characteristics and functions of the microbial forms are largely unknown. Here, we describe analyses of the expression, regulation, and activities of two Phys in the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa. In addition to containing the signature N-terminal domain predicted to covalently associate with a bilin chromophore, PHY-1 and PHY-2 contain C-terminal histidine kinase and response regulator motifs, implying that they function as hybrid two-component sensor kinases activated by light. A bacterially expressed N-terminal fragment of PHY-2 covalently …

The Caenorhabditis Elegans Heterochronic Regulator Lin-14 Is A Novel Transcription Factor That Controls The Developmental Timing Of Transcription From The Insulin/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Gene Ins-33 By Direct Dna Binding, Marta Hristova, Darcy Birse, Yang Hong, Victor Ambros
Dartmouth Scholarship
A temporal gradient of the novel nuclear protein LIN-14 specifies the timing and sequence of stage-specific developmental events in Caenorhabditis elegans. The profound effects of lin-14 mutations on worm development suggest that LIN-14 directly or indirectly regulates stage-specific gene expression. We show that LIN-14 can associate with chromatin in vivo and has in vitro DNA binding activity. A bacterially expressed C-terminal domain of LIN-14 was used to select DNA sequences that contain a putative consensus binding site from a pool of randomized double-stranded oligonucleotides. To identify candidates for genes directly regulated by lin-14, we employed DNA microarray hybridization to compare …
