Morels: a morsel after the fire: Last year's Interior wildfires may provide Alaskans with a bumper crop of morels in 2005 and 2006. These sought-after mushrooms are a valuable forest product and grow profusely in the year immediately after a fire. Scientists are studying their genetics and growth patterns, and the potential for commercial morel harvesting in Alaska. / Deirdre Helfferich -- Students and Environmental Ethics: Three undergraduate students in SNRAS's environmental ethics class describe formative experiences in their lives that led to guiding principles for their relationship with their environment. / Amy Craigen, Christopher Held, and Ben Meyer -- …

The Campaign To Establish A Last Great Wilderness: The Arctic National Wildlife Range, Roger W. Kaye Apr 2005

The Campaign To Establish A Last Great Wilderness: The Arctic National Wildlife Range, Roger W. Kaye

Political Science

In 1960, after nearly a decade of controversy and failed legislative attempts, the Arctic National Wildlife Range was established by an executive order "for the purpose of preserving unique wildlife, wilderness, and recreational values." This is the story of the transformation of this little-known expanse of mountains, forest, and tundra into a place internationally recognized as one of the finest examples of wilderness. This dissertation is a political history of the conflict, examining the roles of key proponents and opponents and the sequence of actions that finally brought the Secretary of Interior to issue the order. More important, it is …

Current Primary Production Rates Of The Western Arctic Ocean Estimated By Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Tracers, Sang Heon Lee Apr 2005

Current Primary Production Rates Of The Western Arctic Ocean Estimated By Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Tracers, Sang Heon Lee

Marine Biology

Currently, the environments in the Arctic are rapidly changing. These changes of climate and ice conditions may alter the quantity, quality, and timing of production of ice algae and phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean. The objectives in this study were to detect any change in the carbon production between current and previous studies and lay the groundwork for the future monitoring of ecosystem response to climate change in the different regions of the western Arctic Ocean. As an Arctic ocean mostly covered by multi or first-year ice, the deep Canada Basin had generally low photosynthetic rates and the maximum rates …

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, 2004, Scott Goldsmith, Alexandra Hill, Darcy Dugan Apr 2005

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, 2004, Scott Goldsmith, Alexandra Hill, Darcy Dugan

ISER Reports

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge contributes to the borough economy primarily through the tourism and seafood industries. The refuge’s lakes, mountains and forests are home to abundant animals, birds, and fish. They provide sport fishing and hunting opportunities as well as a variety of non-consumptive activities such as hiking, rafting and bird watching. The refuge also contains breeding and rearing habitat for substantial salmon populations that support sport fishing both on and off the refuge as well as commercial fishing in Cook Inlet. Three changes in the significance and impact of the refuge emerge in comparing this report with ISER’s …

Program Evaluation: Rose Urban Rural Teacher Training 2005 (Amended), Rosyland Frazier, Williamson Mcdiarmid

ISER Reports

Based on successful experiences in the Student Exchange component of the Rose Urban- Rural Exchange, the Alaska Humanities Forum developed Teacher Training to give urban teachers hands-on experience in rural Alaska Native culture. In 2002, the forum began this summer program for teachers, sending middle- and high-school teachers to Alaska Native culture and spirit camps in rural Alaska. At these camps, urban teachers are exposed to Native arts and crafts, history, subsistence lifestyle, language, and dance. Also at these camps, Alaska Native elders pass on their stories and culture to young people. Teachers go through an orientation before they leave …

Constitutional Change In The Circumpolar Periphery: A Comparative Case Study, Steven Eric Smyth Apr 2005

Constitutional Change In The Circumpolar Periphery: A Comparative Case Study, Steven Eric Smyth

Arctic and Northern Studies

This dissertation probes the origins of intercultural conflict and regional disparity in the circumpolar North. The dissertation asserts that the national governments of Denmark, the United States and Canada have utilized policies of internal colonialism in Alaska, Greenland and the Yukon Territory, and that those policies have shaped inter-cultural relations and contributed to regional disparities in their northern jurisdictions. Michael Hecther's and Dale Johnson's definitions of internal colonialism are utilized for the purposes of this study. The dissertation uses a comparative case study approach, reviewing how national government policies evolved and were applied in Alaska, Yukon and Greenland. It treats …

A Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) Depletion Estimator For The Eastern Bering Sea, Brian Charles Battaile Apr 2005

A Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) Depletion Estimator For The Eastern Bering Sea, Brian Charles Battaile

Fisheries

The decline of the Steller Sea lion in the eastern Bering Sea over the last 25 years has resulted in increased management of the pollock fishery due to requirements of the Endangered Species Act, as food competition was hypothesized to contribute to the decline. Our research focused on determining if the pollock fishery was causing significant depletion in the eastern Bering Sea, particularly in Steller sea lion critical habitat. DeLury depletion models were fitted to catch and effort data from 1995 to 1999, from the observer program, which required considerable processing to obtain a database at a temporal and spatial …

Seasonal Variability Of Pristane In Mussels (Mytilus Trossulus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Jeffrey W. Short Apr 2005

Seasonal Variability Of Pristane In Mussels (Mytilus Trossulus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Jeffrey W. Short

Fisheries

Pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane) concentrations in mussels (Mytilus trossulus) increase abruptly during spring in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska. This increase is mainly due to ingestion by mussels of pristane-laden feces produced by nearshore zooplanktivores, especially juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), and I evaluate whether the increase may be used as an index of foraging success, and hence early marine survival, of pink salmon. Pristane is biosynthesized by Neocalanus copepods. Examination of the trophic and temporal distribution of pristane found in 3,007 samples implicates Neocalanus copepods as the source of pristane in PWS. Neocalanus copepods often dominate the zooplankton biomass during spring …

The Influence Of Water Velocity And Depth On Prey Detection And Capture By Juvenile Coho Salmon And Steelhead: Implications For Habitat Selection And Segregation, John J. Piccolo Apr 2005

The Influence Of Water Velocity And Depth On Prey Detection And Capture By Juvenile Coho Salmon And Steelhead: Implications For Habitat Selection And Segregation, John J. Piccolo

Fisheries

I studied the effects of water velocity and depth on drift-foraging by juvenile coho salmon and steelhead to assess how these influence their reported habitat segregation into pools and riffles, respectively. I used three-dimensional video analysis of stream-tank foraging experiments to test how velocity and depth influence prey capture probabilities, and the geometry and dynamics of prey detection and capture. I used the experimental results to develop net energy intake models to predict optimal foraging velocities for coho and steelhead. Prey capture probabilities for both coho and steelhead declined from $65% to 10% with an increase in velocity from 0.29 …

Power Calculations For Preclinical Studies Using A K-Sample Rank Test And The Lehmann Alternative Hypothesis, Glenn Heller Apr 2005

Power Calculations For Preclinical Studies Using A K-Sample Rank Test And The Lehmann Alternative Hypothesis, Glenn Heller

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Power calculations in a small sample comparative study, with a continuous outcome measure, are typically undertaken using the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic. When the sample size is small, this asymptotic result can be a poor approximation. An alternative approach, using a rank based test statistic, is an exact power calculation. When the number of groups is greater than two, the number of calculations required to perform an exact power calculation is prohibitive. To reduce the computational burden, a Monte Carlo resampling procedure is used to approximate the exact power function of a k-sample rank test statistic under the …

January: Search Based On Social Insect Behavior, Peter C. Lamborn Apr 2005

January: Search Based On Social Insect Behavior, Peter C. Lamborn

Theses and Dissertations

January is a group of interacting stateless model checkers. Each agent functions on a processor located on a super computer or a network of workstations (NOW). The agent's search pattern is a semi-random walk based on the behavior of the grey field slug (Agriolimax reticulatus), the house fly (Musca domestica), and the black ant (Lassius niger). The agents communicate to lessen the amount of duplicate work being done. Every algorithm has a memory threshold above which they search efficiently. This threshold varies not only by model but also by algorithm. Janaury's threshold is lower than the thresholds of other algorithms …
