Influence Of Breed, Heterozygosity, And Disease Incidence On Estimates Of Variance Components Of Respiratory Disease In Preweaned Beef Calves, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. V. Cundiff, G. L. Bennett Apr 2005

Influence Of Breed, Heterozygosity, And Disease Incidence On Estimates Of Variance Components Of Respiratory Disease In Preweaned Beef Calves, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. V. Cundiff, G. L. Bennett

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to characterize genetic and environmental factors influencing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in beef cattle. Records from nine purebred and three composite breeds and a variety of F1 and three-way crosses, including the progeny of 12 additional different sire breeds produced over a 20-yr period (1983 to 2002), were evaluated for breed and heterozygosity effects on the observed incidence of BRD. Heterozygosity fractions for calves and dams were defined by generalized breed origins: British, Continental, and tropically adapted. Variance components were estimated for each pure and composite breed, and across all breeds and crossbreeds. The …

Worthless Patents, Kimberly A. Moore Apr 2005

Worthless Patents, Kimberly A. Moore

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

This article presents the first empirical analysis of patent value by examining renewal rate data for nearly 100,000 patents. Finding that 53.7% of all patentees allow their patents to expire for failure to pay maintenance fees confirm common perceptions of patent issuance being a poor measure of innovation value. Even more interesting is the finding that patents which expire for failure to pay maintenance fees share some common identifiable characteristics. In particular, we found that renewed patents had more claims, cited more prior art, received more citations, had more related applications, had more inventors, and spent longer in prosecution. We …

Digestibility, Nitrogen Balance, And Blood Metabolites In Llama And Alpaca Fed Barley And Barley Alfalfa Forages., Heather Loree Davies Apr 2005

Digestibility, Nitrogen Balance, And Blood Metabolites In Llama And Alpaca Fed Barley And Barley Alfalfa Forages., Heather Loree Davies

Theses and Dissertations

These projects were conducted to determine the digestibility of forage diets with differing CP levels in llamas and alpacas. The Utah study was designed to compare llama and alpaca nutritional parameters to determine if nutritional recommendations for llamas can be directly extrapolated to alpacas. The first study evaluated the effects of forage quality on blood metabolites and nitrogen balance in mature, intact male llamas (n = 4, 36 ± 4.4 months, 87 ± 17 kg) at high altitude in Letanias, Bolivia (4,267 m = aprox.14,000 ft above sea level). A second experiment was conducted with eight adult gelded camelids (n …

Glutamate Receptors In Perirhinal Cortex Mediate Encoding, Retrieval, And Consolidation Of Object Recognition Memory., Boyer D Winters, Timothy J Bussey Apr 2005

Glutamate Receptors In Perirhinal Cortex Mediate Encoding, Retrieval, And Consolidation Of Object Recognition Memory., Boyer D Winters, Timothy J Bussey

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Object recognition is consistently impaired in human amnesia and animal models thereof. Results from subjects with permanent brain damage have revealed the importance of the perirhinal cortex to object recognition memory. Here, we report evidence from rats for interdependent but distinct stages in object recognition memory (encoding, retrieval, and consolidation), which require glutamate receptor activity within perirhinal cortex. Transient blockade of AMPA receptor-mediated synaptic transmission within perirhinal cortex disrupted encoding for short- and long-term memory as well as retrieval and consolidation. In contrast, transient NMDA receptor blockade during encoding affected only long-term object recognition memory; NMDA receptor activity was also …

Proximal Cues Of Pocket Gopher Burrow Plugging Behavior: Influence Of Light, Burrow Openings, And Temperature, Scott J. Werner, Dale L. Nolte, Frederick D. Provenza Apr 2005

Proximal Cues Of Pocket Gopher Burrow Plugging Behavior: Influence Of Light, Burrow Openings, And Temperature, Scott J. Werner, Dale L. Nolte, Frederick D. Provenza

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Burrow plugging is readily observed among mammals adapted for digging (i.e., fossorial mammals) as they create and maintain their burrows. We investigated the influence of light, burrow openings, and thermal environment as cues of pocket gopher (Thomomys mazama, Thomomys talpoides) behavior. When given free access to light and no light during artificial-burrow preference trials, both Thomomys spp. consistently plugged (i.e., avoided) light treatments. Burrow openings did not notably affect plugging behavior of T. mazama. Gophers (T. talpoides) plugged the artificial burrows within the light and cold (7 -C) treatments, but not within the no-light, and 18 or 31 -C treatments …

If: Poems From The Unstandardized Perspective, Douglas Pietrzak '05

Honors Projects

When I was about six years old, I used to read a new sports book every week. The protagonist was always a five to twelve-year-old boy who was slightly dorky and had a minor quirk. Maybe he counted the number of seams on a baseball every morning, had an imaginary pet goldfish, or only wore blue shoes. He was also imaginative and interested in sports, most often baseball, but sometimes soccer. The boy usually went through a series of trials -raising money by painting a fence, helping his grandparents move to a new house, or teaching his little sister to …

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken Apr 2005

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

One of the most misunderstood concepts in zoning law is that of non-conforming uses, or “grandfathering.” Most zoning regulations exempt existing uses that would not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. These uses (land uses or buildings) are called non-conforming uses because they do not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. The often mistaken belief is that zoning regulations must leave non-conforming uses alone. This is incorrect: Neb.Rev.Stat. § 23-173.01 allows non-conforming uses to be terminated, continued or regulated by a county zoning regulation. As a practical matter, however, most counties will not regulate or terminate …

Temporal Origin Of Nitrogen In The Grain Of Tropical Wet-Season Rice, J. E. Sheehy, M. Mnzava, Kenneth G. Cassman, P. L. Mitchell, A. B. Ferrer, R. P. Robles, P. Pablico Apr 2005

Temporal Origin Of Nitrogen In The Grain Of Tropical Wet-Season Rice, J. E. Sheehy, M. Mnzava, Kenneth G. Cassman, P. L. Mitchell, A. B. Ferrer, R. P. Robles, P. Pablico

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The total N in the grain is the integral of the product of the total N absorbed at any instant and the fraction of that N eventually allocated to the grain. We investigated the temporal origin of N in the grain of a wet season rice crop and tested the suitability of 15N nitrate (NH4 15NO3) as a label for that purpose. The total N content of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants was measured by growth analysis throughout the duration of the crop and the measurements were used to calculate the rate of total …

Dynamic Response Indicators Of Heat Stress In Shaded And Non-Shaded Feedlot Cattle, Part 2: Predictive Relationships, R. A. Eigenberg, T. M. Brown-Brandl, John A. Nienaber, G. Leroy Hahn Apr 2005

Dynamic Response Indicators Of Heat Stress In Shaded And Non-Shaded Feedlot Cattle, Part 2: Predictive Relationships, R. A. Eigenberg, T. M. Brown-Brandl, John A. Nienaber, G. Leroy Hahn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Summer heat provides stressful conditions for Bos taurus feeder cattle; in extreme instances these conditions can be fatal. One management option is to provide shade structures for feedlot animals. This study was conducted during the summer of 2001 to compare physiological responses of cattle with shade access or no-shade access. Eight steers were selected from a group of 12, and assigned individual pens. Four pens were fitted with shade structures that allowed the steers to choose shade; the remainder had no shade option. The animals were rotated through pen assignments during the summer season. Continuous measures of respiration rate and …
