Observed Omnivory In The Herbivorous Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis Aureus), Stephen M. Oliveira Jr.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Gila seminuda, a native endangered species, and Oreochromis aureus, a nonnative invasive species, share the same habitat in the form of the Reid Gardner Power Plant intake ponds. The purpose of this study is to characterize the feeding habits of Oreochromis aureus within the Reid Gardner Power Plant intake ponds and address the potential predation habits of Oreochromis aureus. Stomach contents of O. aureus were identified and analyzed using chi-square and log-likelihood ratio techniques, with respect to mass, length, girth, gender, or spatial distribution of samples. Results showed omnivorous behavior with a 7.00% predatory/prey relationship, and no difference of feeding …

Seasonal Changes In Composition Of Lipid Stores In Migratory Birds: Causes And Consequences, Barbara J. Pierce, Scott R. Mcwilliams May 2005

Seasonal Changes In Composition Of Lipid Stores In Migratory Birds: Causes And Consequences, Barbara J. Pierce, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Biology Faculty Publications

It is well established that birds use fat stores to primarily fuel migration; however, few studies have focused on the causes and consequences of observed seasonal changes in fatty acid composition of fat stores in birds. We propose and test two hypotheses that address the causes of these seasonal changes in composition of fat stores: (1) diet composition determines fatty acid composition of fat stores, and (2) birds selectively metabolize and store certain fatty acids during migration in lieu of changing their diet. When we offered Red-eyed Vireos (Vireo olivaceous) choices between diets that differed only in fatty acid composition, …

Periplasmic Flagella Of The Spirochetes Borrelia Burgdorferi And Brachyspira Hyodysenteriae, Melanie S. Sal May 2005

Periplasmic Flagella Of The Spirochetes Borrelia Burgdorferi And Brachyspira Hyodysenteriae, Melanie S. Sal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Spirochetes are unique bacteria that cause a variety of diseases. Motility, provided by periplasmic flagella (PFs), is a virulence factor for spirochetes. This work focuses on PFs from Borrelia burgdorferi and Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. PFs consist of three main parts: basal body, hook, and filament. Monoclonal antibodies were developed to attempt identification of individual FlaB filament proteins in B. hyodysenteriae .;The PF filament of B. burgdorferi consists of a major flagellin, FlaB, and a minor flagellin, FlaA. FlaB constitutes 10-14%, whereas FlaA contributes less than 0.5%, of total cellular protein. Although these flagellins co-precipitate, the location of FlaA on a PF …

Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake Eight Months Following An Alum Treatment, Alan Steinman, Mary Ogdahl May 2005

Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake Eight Months Following An Alum Treatment, Alan Steinman, Mary Ogdahl

Scientific Technical Reports

An analysis of internal phosphorus loading in Spring Lake, MI was conducted during August 2006, eight months following an alum treatment. Sediment cores were removed from 4 sites (that had been sampled previously in 2003 and 2004) and incubated in the laboratory under aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions. Phosphorus flux from the sediments into the overlaying water column were measured over a 22-day period and compared to rates measured from sediment cores collected previously from these sites. Field measurements showed reduced soluble reactive and total phosphorus concentrations the summer following the alum application, but chlorophyll and irradiance …

Color And Depression In The Diagnostic Drawing Series, Cara Emily Levitt May 2005

Color And Depression In The Diagnostic Drawing Series, Cara Emily Levitt

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

One of the most interesting and widely held assumptions by clinicians who used projective drawings was that the absence of color may indicate depression. The research about color’s relationship to depression was ambiguous, limited and dated. In this study it was hypothesized that the absence or presence of color in the Feeling Drawing of the Diagnostic Drawing Series [DDS] will have a positive correlation with a diagnosis of Major Depression. To test this hypothesis the colors both in the DDS archives Major Depression group and comparison group were counted and then statistically analyze to determine if specified colors were present …

The European Neighborhood Policy And Its Impact On The Israel - European Union - United States Triangle, Guy Harpaz May 2005

The European Neighborhood Policy And Its Impact On The Israel - European Union - United States Triangle, Guy Harpaz

San Diego International Law Journal

This Article is not intended to deal with the feasibility of successfully implementing the [European Neighbourhood Policy] ENP, nor does it address its normative aspects from the European perspective. Instead, this article assumes that the parties will successfully implement the ENP, and on the basis of that assumption, attempts to provide a first, critical and interdisciplinary examination of the potentially significant impact of the ENP on the legal, economic, social, and trade landscape of the State of Israel, her citizens, economy, and on her relations with the EU and the United States.

Sand Mining In Baja And Alta California, Harold Magistrale May 2005

Sand Mining In Baja And Alta California, Harold Magistrale

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment will examine some geologic, environmental, and legal aspects of the international sand trade. Looking at the state of sand mining in both countries will demonstrate that the United States and Mexico have parallel regulatory structures and similar environmental concerns and will show how municipal and state officials in Baja California are ale to piggyback their economic concerns onto environmental regulations. This Comment will also examine the sand trade issue for lessons applicable to cross border trade and suggest a certification mechanism that would allow continued sand exports while preserving environmental safeguards.

Three Strategies Of Interpretation, Adrian Vermeule May 2005

Three Strategies Of Interpretation, Adrian Vermeule

San Diego Law Review

We may distinguish three styles or strategies of decisionmaking. Under a maximizing approach, the decisionmaker chooses the action whose consequences are best for the case at hand (defining "best" according to some value the decisionmaker holds). Where decisionmakers choose the action that is best relative to constraints, accounting for the direct costs and opportunity costs of decisionmaking, we may call the approach optimizing rather than maximizing. Whereas the maximizer focuses only on the case at hand, the optimizer acts so as to maximize value over an array of cases. In contrast to both approaches, satisficing permits any decision whose results …

There Is No Textualist Position, Stanley Fish May 2005

There Is No Textualist Position, Stanley Fish

San Diego Law Review

The Author argues that there is no textualist position because there is no candidate on behalf of whom a would-be textualist could argue. He argues that lexical items and grammatical structures by themselves will yield no meaning - will not even me seen as lexical items and grammatical structures - until they are seen as having been produced by some intentional agent. A text whose meaning seems perspicuous and obvious right off the bat is a text for which an intentional context has already been assumed, and it is also a text whose clarity and stability can always be troubled …

"And My Best Friend, My Doctor/Won't Even Say What It Is I'Ve Got": The Role And Significance Of Counsel In Right To Refuse Treatment Cases, Michael L. Perlin

San Diego Law Review

For the past three decades, scholars have carefully considered the scope of the right of involuntarily committed psychiatric patients to refuse the administration of medication from a rich array of perspectives, including, but not limited to, clinical perspectives, civil libertarian perspectives, philosophical perspectives, and political perspectives. Yet, virtually all of this - remarkably - passes over what I believe is the single most important issue in real life. This issue is the most relevant to the actual (as opposed to paper) existence of the right and the actual (as opposed to paper) implementation of that right: the availability and adequacy …

Apocalyptic Surrealism, John Michael Bazan May 2005

Apocalyptic Surrealism, John Michael Bazan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

My artistic philosophies and vision of the world are highly influenced by Surrealism, Symbolism, Romanticism, and the fantasy genre. My work is mainly Symbolic and Surrealistic, applied impressionistically and graphically, and made relative to the modern world by using religious and Apocalyptic Symbolism mixed with cosmic psychological dreamscapes of the universe. My vision of the real world is a symbolic “nightmare enigma”—like Dali's psychotic world of chaos and disorder. My imagery is associated with themes of chaos, war, death, and modern history. The academic term of Apocalyptic Surrealism is the broad mixture of religious Symbolism, political Symbolism, and historical Symbolism …

Journey From Home, Benjamin P. Varela May 2005

Journey From Home, Benjamin P. Varela

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

My art Is built on a foundation of personal experiences: First, as a child In New York City and Puerto Rico, and second, as a man learning his craft in universities and workshops in Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, and Mexico. I categorize this deductive process as the emergence of the personal "Me,” because most artists develop a visual language of signs and symbols that has been shaped by the artist’s family, education, and personal experiences. It is also a deductive process that has shaped the personal “Me” through an analysis of my movement away from pernicious generalities, characterized by living under …

Deposition Of Inhaled Particles In A Symptomatic Asthmatic Human Respiratory Tract, John N. Diflorio May 2005

Deposition Of Inhaled Particles In A Symptomatic Asthmatic Human Respiratory Tract, John N. Diflorio

Theses

Inhalation medicinal aerosol and biological aerosol risk assessment are the current motivation for deposition models to be developed. Inhalation aerosols have been around for many years for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory ailments in which the aerosols targeted the upper airways. Current research is focused to target the alveolar sacs due to their vast surface area for drug and gene delivery. Targeting the alveolar sacs Corkery (2000) requires a slow and deep breathing pattern for maximum deposition at the alveolar units. Also the particles must be fairly small (1-3 µm) to avoid deposition by impaction. Gautam et al. …

From "Predominance" To "Resolvability": A New Approach To Regulating Class Actions, Allan Erbsen May 2005

From "Predominance" To "Resolvability": A New Approach To Regulating Class Actions, Allan Erbsen

Vanderbilt Law Review

Class actions incite both delight and disgust. Several complementary themes in popular culture embrace the class action, including sympathy for underdog litigants challenging powerful malefactors, fascination with massive redistributions of wealth from corporations to individuals, and reluctance to permit large and influential wrongdoers to escape justice merely because of their size and clout. Class actions have thus become an appealing procedural counterweight to the burdens that modern society imposes on consumers and citizens, giving many little Davids a fighting chance for protection from or retribution against political and economic Goliaths. But class actions also expose and rile competing visions of …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxoplasma gondii is a highly successful protozoan parasite in the phylum Apicomplexa, which contains numerous animal and human pathogens. T.gondii is amenable to cellular, biochemical, molecular and genetic studies, making it a model for the biology of this important group of parasites. To facilitate forward genetic analysis, we have developed a high-resolution genetic linkage map for T.gondii . The genetic map was used to assemble the scaffolds from a 10X shotgun whole genome sequence, thus defining 14 chromosomes with markers spaced at ∼300 kb intervals across the genome. Fourteen chromosomes were identified comprising a total genetic size of ∼592 cM …

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher May 2005

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher

Articles

The social sciences in general and educational researchers in particular have become more and more conscious of ethical propriety and the need for universally acceptable codes of ethical conduct in recent years. This newfound interest stems in part from criticisms of innovative contemporary research methodologies, and the fear that they may be at odds with certain fundamental ethical principles. This, in turn, has resulted in the integrity and validity of some of these new contemporary styles of research being held up to scrutiny and debated by adherents to the more conventional research methodologies. This paper begins by tracing back to …

The Aristocratic City: The Dance Aesthetic Of Dorothee Gunther And The Political Legacy Of Francois Delsarte, Karl Toepfer Apr 2005

The Aristocratic City: The Dance Aesthetic Of Dorothee Gunther And The Political Legacy Of Francois Delsarte, Karl Toepfer

Mime Journal

The Delsartean philosophy of movement adapted to the currents of modernism because some female disciples of Delsarte succeeded in translating the master’s ideas into a modernist idiom compatible with new political and cultural realities. These disciples grasped an underlying principle of the Delsartean system: a body is “free” to the extent that the meanings of its movements can migrate across contexts, that its movements can determine a context as much as a context defines its opportunities for movement. An especially provocative, successful, and even mysterious integration of Delsartean philosophy into modernist performance culture appeared in the work and pedagogy of …

Pickering Brook Salt Marsh Restoration - Phase Ii, Patti Reilly Apr 2005

Pickering Brook Salt Marsh Restoration - Phase Ii, Patti Reilly

PREP Reports & Publications

In the early 1900’s, the majority of coastal salt marshes in New England were ditched as part of an aggressive mosquito control program. In an attempt to eradicate mosquito-breeding habitat, open water areas were drained by a series of ditches excavated in the thick peat soils. Elimination of open water and the unnatural drainage patterns led to degradation of healthy, functional saltmarsh systems and the disappearance of critical habitat for American black ducks, wading birds, shorebirds, shellfish, and fish species, including those that eat mosquito larvae. The practice of mosquito ditching has since been found to have unintended consequences in …

Achieving Flexibility In Direct-Manipulation Programming Environments By Relaxing The Edit-Time Grammar, Benjamin E. Birnbaum, Kenneth J. Goldman Apr 2005

Achieving Flexibility In Direct-Manipulation Programming Environments By Relaxing The Edit-Time Grammar, Benjamin E. Birnbaum, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Structured program editors can lower the entry barrier for beginning computer science students by preventing syntax errors. However, when editors force programs to be executable after every edit, a rigid development process results. We explore the use of a separate edit-time grammar that is more permissive than the runtime grammar. This helps achieve a balance between structured editing and flexibility, particularly in live development environments. JPie is a graphical programming environment that applies this separation to the live development of Java applications. We present the design goals for JPie’s edit-time grammar and describe how its implementation supports a balance between …
