Comparative Genomics Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease Virus, C. Carrillo, E. R. Tuhlman, Gustavo A. Delhon, Z. Lu, A. Carreno, A. Vagnozzi, G. F. Kutish, D. L. Rock May 2005

Comparative Genomics Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease Virus, C. Carrillo, E. R. Tuhlman, Gustavo A. Delhon, Z. Lu, A. Carreno, A. Vagnozzi, G. F. Kutish, D. L. Rock

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Here we present complete genome sequences, including a comparative analysis, of 103 isolates of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) representing all seven serotypes and including the first complete sequences of the SAT1 and SAT3 genomes. The data reveal novel highly conserved genomic regions, indicating functional constraints for variability as well as novel viral genomic motifs with likely biological relevance. Previously undescribed invariant motifs were identified in the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions (UTR), as was tolerance for insertions/deletions in the 5’ UTR. Fifty-eight percent of the amino acids encoded by FMDV isolates are invariant, suggesting that these residues are critical for …

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond May 2005

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond

Avian Cognition Papers

Clustering is a practical data mining approach of pattern detection. Because of the sensitivity of initial conditions, k-means clustering often suffers from low clustering performance. We present a procedure to refine initial conditions of k-means clustering by analyzing density distributions of a data set before estimating the number of clusters k necessary for the data set, as well as the positions of the initial centroids of the clusters. We demonstrate that this approach indeed improves the accuracy and performance of k-means clustering measured by average intra to interclustering error ratio. This method is applied to the virtual ecology project to …

Attention-Altering Signal Interactions In The Multimodal Courtship Display Of The Wolf Spider Schizocosa Uetzi, Eileen A. Hebets May 2005

Attention-Altering Signal Interactions In The Multimodal Courtship Display Of The Wolf Spider Schizocosa Uetzi, Eileen A. Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Complex signals are common throughout the animal kingdom, consisting of one or more signals in one or more sensory modalities presented within a single display. I tested an efficacy-based backup hypothesis of complex signal function using the bimodal courtship signaling wolf spider Schizocosa uetzi. This hypothesis predicts that the visual and vibratory courtship displays function as backups to each other in the presence of environmental variability. I compared mating frequencies across four environmental treatments in which the visual and vibratory environments were manipulated independently in a 2 × 2 design with visual treatments of light/dark (i.e., visual signal present/absent) …

Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim May 2005

Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim

Saudi Medical Journal

Urolithiasis is a multifactorial recurrent disease of world-wide distribution in rural, urban, industrial and non-industrial regions. Changes in urinary pH is a risk factor especially with hyperuricosuria, hypercalciuria or hyperoxaluria. With recurrence, hypercalcuria and higher urinary oxalate levels are more frequent. Hypercalciuria and hyperuricosuria showed correlation with family history of stones. The ionic relations between various stone forming salts in urine of patients are opposite to that in controls and are well represented in stone composition. Obesity is a risk factor in both genders. Over eating a diet rich in all nutrients was associated with hyperuricosuria while a diet high …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Prasher (42) cloned a cDNA for the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria in 1992. Shortly thereafter, to the amazement of many investigators, this gene or derivatives thereof were successfully expressed and conferred fluorescence to bacteria and Caenorhabditis elegans cells in culture (10, 31), followed by yeast (24, 39), mammals (40), Drosophila (66), Dictyostelium (23, 30), plants (28, 49), and filamentous fungi (54). The tremendous success of GFP as a reporter can be attributed to unique qualities of this 238- amino-acid, 27-kDa protein which absorbs light at maxima of 395 and 475 nm and emits light …

The Matamoros “Drug Cult” Murders: Borderland Perceptions And The Shaping Of Belief, Victor Gomez May 2005

The Matamoros “Drug Cult” Murders: Borderland Perceptions And The Shaping Of Belief, Victor Gomez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Media coverage of the Matamoros “drug cult murders” highlighted the abduction and murder of twenty-one year old college student, Mark Kilroy, while enhancing negative images of Mexican people. What makes the Kilroy coverage a watershed in history is how racism played a part during and after print media coverage of the discovery at Santa Elena. Through U.S. media especially, Anglo beliefs of cultural backwardness, Mexican police corruption, and religious misrepresentation are expressed by way of stereotypes held about Mexican border people. In this day and age, U.S. media uses these superficial beliefs to portray one group of people, and enhances …

The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex: The Evolution Of A Concept, Brett J. Millan May 2005

The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex: The Evolution Of A Concept, Brett J. Millan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Since the late 19 th century, anthropologists and archaeologists have attempted to explain and interpret an artistic phenomenon that flourished in the southeastern United States. For years explorations in that area unearthed exquisite examples of unique objects with bewildering motifs, and in 1945, Antonio Waring, Jr. and Preston Holder defined the art style as an expression of a ceremonial complex that swept through that region around the 15 th century. The interpretation took fifty years to evolve into the “Southeastern Ceremonial Complex,” and since then, new discoveries, methodologies and theories have changed the concept even further, and in the future, …

Revising Seed Purity Laws To Account For The Adventitious Presence Of Genetically Modified Varieties: A First Step Towards Coexistence, A. Bryan Endres May 2005

Revising Seed Purity Laws To Account For The Adventitious Presence Of Genetically Modified Varieties: A First Step Towards Coexistence, A. Bryan Endres

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Adoption of genetically modified (GM) seed varieties in the United States, Canada, and South America continues to expand, with GM crops comprising almost 76 million hectares and over 93 percent of the total biotech cropland worldwide. As an increasing number of farmers plant GM varieties, the potential for adventitious mixture of genetically modified DNA with products produced via organic and conventional (non-GM) methods also increases. Many consumers of organic and identity-preserved products, however, object to the adventitious presence of genetically modified DNA at even low levels. Accordingly, the ability of farmers to choose between conventional, organic, or GM crop production …

Was The Frog Prince Sexually Molested?: A Review Of Peter Westen's The Logic Of Consent, Heidi M. Hurd May 2005

Was The Frog Prince Sexually Molested?: A Review Of Peter Westen's The Logic Of Consent, Heidi M. Hurd

Michigan Law Review

Peter Westen's The Logic of Consent is nothing short of a tour de force. In the tradition of the very best and most significant contributions to legal theory, Professor Westen demonstrates that we do not know what we think we know about a capacity that on a daily basis turns trespasses into dinner parties, brutal batteries into football games, rape into lovemaking, and the commercial appropriation of name and likeness into biography. While we all employ claims of consent in everyday moral gossip to absolve some and withhold sympathy from others, and while courts of law across the nation commonly …

Trade-Related Environmental Measures And Gatt: The Conflict Between Trade Libralization And Environmental Protection, Fang Zheng May 2005

Trade-Related Environmental Measures And Gatt: The Conflict Between Trade Libralization And Environmental Protection, Fang Zheng

LLM Theses and Essays

GATT/WTO firmly establishes a global free trade regime, which is dedicated to free and freer global trade, to the benefit of all nations. However, trade liberalization poses great risk to the environment, which has been in a process of deterioration. Thus, many countries, especially developed ones, have begun to enact TREMs, with an eye to force, or induce other countries, especially developing ones, to strengthen their commitment to environmental protection. Developing countries feel they are targeted by developed ones mala fide. Thus, disputes and debates arise. This thesis is an attempted effort made to point out that TREMs reflect a …

Not A Matter Of Interpretation, Steven Knapp, Walter Benn Michaels May 2005

Not A Matter Of Interpretation, Steven Knapp, Walter Benn Michaels

San Diego Law Review

This Article explores the basic question of statutory interpretation. The disagreement among scholars is a theoretical one - it is a dispute about what the proper object of interpretation should be, about whether it should be what Scalia calls "the objective indication of the words" (what the authors said), or whether it should be "the intent of the legislature" (what the authors meant).

Intrapreneurship In Nonprofit Organizations: Examining The Factors That Facilitate Entrepreneurial Behavior Among Employees, Michael G. Stull May 2005

Intrapreneurship In Nonprofit Organizations: Examining The Factors That Facilitate Entrepreneurial Behavior Among Employees, Michael G. Stull

Student Scholarship

Multi-source data from 18 organizations was utilized to examine intrapreneurship in the nonprofit sector. Specifically, individual level and firm level variables were introduced concurrently to explore competing and complementary mechanisms in an effort to provide a better understanding of intrapreneurial orientations and behaviors. Employing structural equation modeling on the multi-source cross sectional survey data, results suggest that employee entrepreneurial orientation is greater when (a) high managerial trust is perceived by an employee, and (b) and the employee feels a strong fit between his/her own personal values and those held by the organization. In turn, this individual entrepreneurial orientation has significant …

Gender Equity Of Traditional And Non-Traditional Career Roles In Newbery Award-Winning And Honor Books, Mark Boster

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Newbery Award-Winning and Honor books from 1995-2004 present careers in a traditional or non-traditional manner. Two of the most recognizable titles, due to recent Hollywood productions, are Because of Winn-Dixie and Holes. Though there has been much research in the area of gender roles, which indicates males and females in children’s literature are depicted stereotypically, no research was found concerning the area of literary gender stereotypes in careers. After reviewing the use of bibliotherapy and theories of career and gender development, this quantitative descriptive study found careers in Newbery Award and …

Alterations In Wall Shear Stress Predict Sites Of Neointimal Hyperplasia After Stent Implantation In Rabbit Iliac Arteries, John F. Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Robert C. Molthen, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, Phillip F. Pratt, Michael D. Hardel, Judy R. Kersten, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Restenosis resulting from neointimal hyperplasia (NH) limits the effectiveness of intravascular stents. Rates of restenosis vary with stent geometry, but whether stents affect spatial and temporal distributions of wall shear stress (WSS) in vivo is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that alterations in spatial WSS after stent implantation predict sites of NH in rabbit iliac arteries. Antegrade iliac artery stent implantation was performed under angiography, and blood flow was measured before casting 14 or 21 days after implantation. Iliac artery blood flow domains were obtained from three-dimensional microfocal X-ray computed tomography imaging and reconstruction of the arterial casts. Indexes of …

David Hume On Miracles, Kyle G. Sessions May 2005

David Hume On Miracles, Kyle G. Sessions

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Albert Einstein once said, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is." A quick study of David Hume's Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding reveals that he believed strongly in the first way. Why is this? First of all, it is in his definition of miracle. Hume defines a miracle as a violation of the laws of nature. This is a problematic definition to begin with, as it appears to preclude the possibility of there ever being a miracle. If a miracle is something that violates …
