Animal production and livestock published reports

Replaces Miscellaneous Publication 29/2004

Which was issued in December 2004

Traceability is fast becoming the most prominent issue between global livestock trading partners. In the future, international markets will demand assurances that individual animals can be adequately traced for the whole of that animal's life , through multiple transactions, and ultimately to its property of birth.

In Australia, the National Livestock identification System or NLIS is the national system for lifetime traceability of livestock. NLIS will enable rapid trace back through all movements made by that animal to the property of that animal's birth in the event of a disease …

Resurrected: An In-Depth Study Of Fitzgerald's Female Found In The Basil Stories And The Great Gatsby, Therese Fields

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

When people hear the name F. Scott Fitzgerald they quickly think of his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald's Gatsby is the great American novel. Why? It withstands time and the changes of contemporary society. This novel moves us, shakes us, and reminds us of our enlightening dreams and the realistic truths behind them. Why do readers connect with and feel empathy for the flawed Jay Gatsby? We, like Gatsby, hope for the green light and all that it holds in store for us. Gatsby is driven by the green light, which represents his hope to change the past. It is …

Characterization Of Microbial Communities In Karstic Sediments : A Study Of Cave Bacteria In Central Kentucky., Justine Kay Roback 1964- May 2005

Characterization Of Microbial Communities In Karstic Sediments : A Study Of Cave Bacteria In Central Kentucky., Justine Kay Roback 1964-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Few previous studies have compared microbial communities in subterranean and surface environments. Chemical analyses used to characterize the surface and cave microbial environments indicated limited exchange between surface and subsurface waters. Here, bacterial communities from four distinct cave sediments collected in central Kentucky and adjacent surface streams were compared using a combination of culture and molecular methods. Predictions were that: 1) Cave communities will have unique community structures when compared to those of nearby surface sediments, and 2) Genetic diversity of bacterial communities in cave sediments will be higher than those in nearby surface sediments. Since diversity and community structure …

Investigations Of N-Acetyltransferases In Human Hepatocytes And Rat Models., Jason Matthew Walraven May 2005

Investigations Of N-Acetyltransferases In Human Hepatocytes And Rat Models., Jason Matthew Walraven

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis begins by reviewing human N-acetyltransferases (Chapter I), then outlines experiments involving human hepatocytes and rat N-acetyltransferases (Chapters II-V). These experiments facilitated the development of a dissertation project designed to study N-acetyltransferase tissue-specific expression in inbred rat strains (Chapter VI). Real-time PCR experiments concluded that genetic and/or environmental factors influence N-acetyltransferase expression in cryopreserved human hepatocytes. Therefore, an animal model must be used to study N-acetyltransferase expression. Initial studies of recombinanatly expressed rat N-acetyltransferases (Nats) revealed a correlation between rat and human N-acetyltransferases in nucleotide and amino acide sequence, catalytic activity, substrate selectivity and thermostability, suggesting the rat is …

Role Of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And P-Selectin In Platelet-Arteriolar Wall Adhesion And Associated Arteriolar Constriction During Lung Reperfusion., Alexander V. Ovechkin 1957- May 2005

Role Of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And P-Selectin In Platelet-Arteriolar Wall Adhesion And Associated Arteriolar Constriction During Lung Reperfusion., Alexander V. Ovechkin 1957-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reperfusion of the ischemic lung causes pulmonary arteriolar vasoconstriction and reduces alveolar perfusion. Lung ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury leads to platelet and leukocyte activation which could contribute to decreased alveolar perfusion during reperfusion by platelet-arteriolar wall interactions (rolling and adhesion) and subsequent microvascular constriction. During the oxidative stress of ischemia and reperfusion, formation of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) may promote platelet adhesion to the vascular wall with subsequent formation of microthrombi and release of vasoactive substances. Platelets play an important role in causing reperfusion injury in the systemic vasculature through accumulation and release of mediators, but information is lacking about consequences …

The Effects Of Core Affect, Emotion, And Self-Efficacy On Physiologic Response To Social Stressors, Jessica L. Reedy

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Cardiovascular health is affected by many factors including biological aspects such as heredity and overall health, as well as by environmental factors. Social stress, socioeconomic status, family environment, and coping skills have all been shown to contribute increased risk for cardiovascular disease. In an effort to further elucidate past findings in this area, this study, conducted on 36 college-age students, examined the connection between physiological response (blood pressure, heart rate, and mean arterial pressure) to laboratory social stressors in correspondence to emotional, affective, and arousal levels, as measured by self-report. The results yielded a significant relationship between physiologic response to …

Functional Differences Among Color Morphs Of Impatiens Walleriana (Balsaminaceae), May 2005, Anne B. Morris

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Functional differences between color morphs of Impatiens walleriana were studied in Monteverde, Costa Rica to see if they influenced the fitness of the color morphs. Nectar removal rates, nectar quantity, nectar quality, length of pollen availability, flower longevity, and seed set were compared between magenta, salmon, pink, and white color morphs. Red, purple, magenta, pink, salmon, and white cultivated Impatiens and magenta, salmon, pink, and peach I. walleriana were observed in the Monteverde Butterfly Garden to see if color preferences occur among butterflies. In addition, magenta color morphs were studied along an altitudinal gradient to see if altitude caused functional …

Factors Influencing Pollination And Fruit Set In Epidendrum Radicans, May 2005, Megan Dixon May 2005

Factors Influencing Pollination And Fruit Set In Epidendrum Radicans, May 2005, Megan Dixon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Food deception mimicry is a device in which plants lure pollinators with flowers that don’t contain a reward. Flowers that use deception may use two taxa mimicry, automimicry, or mimicry based on naivete. Epidendrum radicans has been documented to take advantage of two taxa mimicry only in close geographic range. This study finds that although pollinia removal and pollination is low in monospecific patches of E. radicans, successful pollination is a product of pollinator naivete and/or long distance two taxa mimicry. The likelihood of pollinator visitation increases for each plant with inflorescence size. Pollination rate peaks with the peak in …

Pollinator Limitation And Seed Set Of Impatiens Walleriana, May 2005, Alison Parker May 2005

Pollinator Limitation And Seed Set Of Impatiens Walleriana, May 2005, Alison Parker

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Plants that are pollinator limited may show important fitness relationships with factors influencing visitation. Groups of 60 bagged, natural, and hand-pollinated flowers of Impatiens walleriana (Balsaminaceae) showed much higher seed set with pollination - flowers produced seed pods 21%, 70%, and 100% of the time, respectively. I also found higher seed set for high visitation sites in the Monteverde Butterfly Garden with naturally visited patches outside – mean seed set inside was 146.5 per 60 stems, while outside it was only 81. Neighborhood, patch size, sunlight, and elevation are speculated to play a role in pollinator visitation. I compared seed …

State [Fair] Park: Nebraska Vernacular, Andrew Charles Peterson May 2005

State [Fair] Park: Nebraska Vernacular, Andrew Charles Peterson

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Each year the Nebraska State Fair comes and goes; however, the abandoned fairgrounds remain causing a void in Lincoln’s urban fabric. This project proposes a remedy to the fairground’s wavering between programmatic solidity and impermanence by redeveloping and renaming the site. The new State [Fair] Park will function as a park for 51 weeks out of the year and a fair for one. The result is a recreational nucleus for the city of Lincoln showcasing Nebraska’s historically agricultural economy and character. State [Fair] Park is designed according to “a single, unifying ideal”—to showcase Nebraska’s farmland vernacular.1 Utilizing this principle during …

A Fishing Farm In The West Fjords Of Iceland: A Preliminary Report Of The Archaeofauna From Gjögur, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The date for the onset of full scale commercial fisheries in Iceland remains somewhat controversial, but thus far the earliest radiocarbon dated seasonal fishing station (11th- 13th century) is in NW Iceland’s Strandasýsla County at Akurvík. This paper presents a preliminary report of the ongoing analysis of the large archaeofauna from the farm mound at Gjögur, 3 km from Akurvík, places the site of Gjögur in the wider context of the NW region of Iceland by comparing the site with the Akurvík archaeofauna, and outlines new methodologies of reconstructing live fish size and age based on recovered fish bones. Although …

Permeability Of Corn, Soybeans, And Soft Red And White Winter Wheat As Affected By Bulk Density, Michael D. Montross, Samuel G. Mcneill May 2005

Permeability Of Corn, Soybeans, And Soft Red And White Winter Wheat As Affected By Bulk Density, Michael D. Montross, Samuel G. Mcneill

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Darcy’s law is a function of viscosity, permeability, and velocity and can be used to predict the airflow resistance in granular materials at low air velocities. Permeability also governs the magnitude of natural convection currents during periods of non-aerated grain storage. The permeability of corn, soybeans, soft white winter wheat, and soft red winter wheat were measured as a function of bulk density and moisture content. Air was passed through a column of grain and the flow rate and pressure drop measured. Bulk density and kernel density were also measured to determine the porosity of grain in the test column. …

Crop Yield Response To Precision Deep Tillage, Larry G. Wells, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Scott A. Shearer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experimental precision deep tillage was applied at three sites in central Kentucky with relatively well-drained silt loam soils in no-till crop production. Fields were divided into 0.4 ha (1 ac) grid cells using DGPS mapping. Assessment of soil compaction by machinery traffic was made using multiple soil cone penetrometer measurements and expressed as cone index (CI). Corn, wheat, and soybean yields were depressed in grid cells with CIavg ≥ 1.5 MPa (218 psi) prior to application of tillage treatments at sites 1 and 3, whereas at site 2, where most of the highest average CI values ranged from 1.44 …

Effect Of Fat And Casein Particles In Milk On The Scattering Of Elliptically Polarized Light, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Jeremie Wade, Janakiraman N. Swamy, Mustafa M. Aslan, M. Pinar Mengüç

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

In this article, we present an experimental approach to determine the milk fat content using scattered light intensity profiles. The elements of the scattering (Mueller) matrix have been shown to provide valuable information about variation of the optical properties of scattering particles. The scattering behavior of fat and casein in terms of the scattering matrix elements was experimentally determined for milk with varying fat levels ranging from 0.05 wt% (skim) to 3.20 wt% (whole). Three of the scattering Mueller matrix elements, specifically S11, S12/S11, and S33/S11, were found to be …

A Developmental Switch In The Response Of Drg Neurons To Ets Transcription Factor Signaling, Simon Hippenmeyer, Eline Vrieseling, Markus Sigrist, Thomas Portmann, Celia Laengle, David R. Ladle, Silvia Arber

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Two ETS transcription factors of the Pea3 subfamily are induced in subpopulations of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory and spinal motor neurons by target-derived factors. Their expression controls late aspects of neuronal differentiation such as target invasion and branching. Here, we show that the late onset of ETS gene expression is an essential requirement for normal sensory neuron differentiation. We provide genetic evidence in the mouse that precocious ETS expression in DRG sensory neurons perturbs axonal projections, the acquisition of terminal differentiation markers, and their dependence on neurotrophic support. Together, our findings indicate that DRG sensory neurons exhibit a temporal …

Rebooting Cybertort Law, Michael L. Rustad, Thomas H. Koenig May 2005

Rebooting Cybertort Law, Michael L. Rustad, Thomas H. Koenig

Washington Law Review

Cyberspace provides an ideal legal environment for tortfeasors and online criminals because Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have no duty to mitigate harms caused by ongoing torts, crimes, and infringing acts. Courts have stretched Congress's express language in § 230 of the Communications Decency Act from the narrow purpose of immunizing ISPs as publishers to the expanded purpose of shielding them from all tort liability. This Article proposes imposing a limited duty of care on ISPs to remove or block ongoing tortious activities on their services when they have been given actual notice. This reform will harmonize American ISP liability law …

Prevention Of Atrophic Nonunion Development By Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7, Takeshi Makino, David J. Hak, Scott Hazelwood, Shane Curtiss, A. Hari Reddi

Biomedical Engineering

Severe periosteal and soft tissue disruption at the time of fracture may result in the formation of an atrophic nonunion. We have developed a reproducible atrophic nonunion in an animal model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the immediate application of recombinant human BMP-7 to the fracture site could rescue the healing process in this nonunion model. A total of 56 three month old Fisher 344 rats were utilized. A 1.25mm diameter K-wire was inserted into the femur in a retrograde fashion, and a mid-diaphyseal closed transverse fracture was created using a standard three point bending device. …

Administrative Law Goes To War, Cass R. Sunstein May 2005

Administrative Law Goes To War, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

What are the President's war-making powers? This essay, a brief reply to an article by Curtis Bradley and Jack Goldsmith, contends that the answer lies in administrative law, at least in the first instance. The President's authority often depends on what Congress has said, and under established principles, the President has a great deal of power to interpret ambiguities in congressional enactments – in war no less than in peace. The principal qualifications involve interpretive principles, also found in administrative law, that call for a narrow construction of presidential authority to invade constitutionally sensitive interests. The relevant arguments are illustrated …
