Promoting Energy Awareness Through Interventions In Public Space, Margot Jacobs Admin, Ulrika Löfgren
Promoting Energy Awareness Through Interventions In Public Space, Margot Jacobs Admin, Ulrika Löfgren
Nordes Conference Series
‘Free Energy’ consists of a series of conceptual design examples exploring how to work with energy as a design material by making it more apparent in the use of things and by making choices more explicit to users in public space. The Energy Tap is first in the series of design examples to be completed and placed within local environments, in order to explore methods for participatory and public involvement as well as examine how such objects might stimulate reflection. As design examples, our ‘tests’ have been crafted as a participatory and reflective forum, as a means for people to …

Undergoing rehabilitation is a learning process. For the patient to learn about his condition and ways of affecting it. For the caregiver to learn about the patient’s situation and potential. This mutual learning can be supported through the notion of collaborative articulation. A article interfaces is used for sharing relevant patient narratives, adding supportive media for patients to take home, collaboratively articulating the next steps in treatment and generating feedback on progress. The CARE article carries link to digital media which can be viewed on a variety of displays. A special device, Mouse++, is used for navigating on the article …
Knowledge In The Making: Practitioner-Driven Systems Development In A Community, Anna-Liisa Syrjänen
Knowledge In The Making: Practitioner-Driven Systems Development In A Community, Anna-Liisa Syrjänen
Nordes Conference Series
This work contributes to the field of information systems and examines how practitioner-driven systems development is shaped by long-term theories- in-use on practitioners’ actual domain and community formation at grass-root level. The topic is approached as an in-situ infrastructuring process in a non-profit community where information technology (IT) is developed by non-IT-professionals. Such an approach to IT design is tentatively conceptualized as ‘organic’ infrastructuring, i.e. IT transformation done by practitioners whose work is conditioned by aspects of their domain, community and its raison d’être and realized in domain-specific IT developed continuously in everyday usage. The study shows how certain parts …

Using Virtual Prototype For Cross-Cultural Visual Design, Andrea Castellobranco Júdice, Marcelo Ortega Júdice
Nordes Conference Series
This article presents an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) virtual prototype for cross-cultural design. The goal was to demonstrate a study of user’s preferences for a visual language, and at the same time to test virtual prototype as a tool for this kind of approach. The method was a task-based usability test. The results demonstrate that the cultural context affects user’s perception, and therefore influences his or her mental models, They also prove that the virtual prototype is an effective tool.
Teaching Design Research In The Studio, Ben Matthews, Jacob Buur
Teaching Design Research In The Studio, Ben Matthews, Jacob Buur
Nordes Conference Series
Design education is diversifying as it responds both to the needs of industry, and to the long-standing demands for design (as a discipline) to take its place as a legitimate academic field in its own right. In this article we describe an attempt to integrate design research into a studio-based design education by giving students the opportunity to analyse data collected during their own projects. In the three-week project, students were given short courses in research methods and analysis, and an initial research question to frame their inquiry. Each group of students produced a short research article as their deliverable …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This study was undertaken to determine if administration of recombinant bovine interleukin-12 (rBoIL-12) could stimulate a cellular immune response that protected calves from an oral challenge inoculation with Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. In a first experiment, rBoIL-12 intraperitoneally administered as a single dose 1 day before challenge inoculation, did not alter the course of infection. The percentage of immune competent cells and levels of cytokine gene expression in the ileo-cecal mucosa and in the draining lymph nodes of treated calves were similar to those of untreated control calves. However, when rBoIL-12 was subcutaneously administered daily from 2 days before infection to …

Role Of Stat3 In Regulating Hif-1alpha Expression And Tumor Angiogenesis, Jon J. Briggs
Role Of Stat3 In Regulating Hif-1alpha Expression And Tumor Angiogenesis, Jon J. Briggs
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Increased vascularization (angiogenesis) is a required adaptation for sustained tumor growth, and the primary mediator of de novo blood vessel formation is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The central transcriptional activator of VEGF is hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), a heterodimeric transcription factor composed of an inducible HIF-1α subunit and a constitutively expressed HIF-1β subunit. In addition to HIF-1, it has recently been reported that signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) is required for VEGF production and angiogenesis. Although it is known that Stat3 is an important mediator of many of the oncogenic signaling pathways that regulate HIF-1α, it …

Endothelial Cell Pseudopods And Angiogenesis Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Ivan L. Cameron, Nicholas Short, Luzhe Sun, W. Elaine Hardman
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Background
A neoplastic tumor cannot grow beyond a millimeter or so in diameter without recruitment of endothelial cells and new blood vessels to supply nutrition and oxygen for tumor cell survival. This study was designed to investigate formation of new blood vessels within a human growing breast cancer tumor model (MDA MB231 in mammary fat pad of nude female mouse). Once the tumor grew to 35 mm3, it developed a well-vascularized capsule. Histological sections of tumors greater than 35 mm3were stained with PAS, with CD-31 antibody (an endothelial cell maker), or with hypoxia inducible factor 1α …

Potassium (K+) channel subunits of the Kv3 subfamily (Kv3.1-Kv3.4) display a positively shifted voltage dependence of activation and fast activation/deactivation kinetics when compared with other voltage-gated K+ channels, features that confer on Kv3 channels the ability to accelerate the repolarization of the action potential (AP) efficiently and specifically. In the cortex, the Kv3.1 and Kv3.2 proteins are expressed prominently in a subset of GABAergic interneurons known as fast-spiking (FS) cells and in fact are a significant determinant of the fast-spiking discharge pattern. However, in addition to expression at FS cell somata, Kv3.1 and Kv3.2 proteins also are expressed prominently at …

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle
Dissertations and Theses
The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a tropical rainforest reserve in the northeastern corner of Honduras, is home to several subsistence-based indigenous groups, including the Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as the non-indigenous Ladinos. Communities within the reserve depend on forest resources, swidden agriculture, marine resources and/or small-scale ranching as the foundations for local economies. Regulations placed on these subsistence practices, after establishment of the biosphere reserve in 1980, have created unique and new pressures and resulted in a blend of traditional and innovative resource use. A notable result is the promotion of ecotourism as a solution for meeting the …

Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater
Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Modeled hyperspectral reflectance signatures just above the water surface are obtained from radiative transfer models to create synthetic images of targets below the water surface. Images are displayed as 24 bit RGB images of the water surface using selected channels. Example model outputs are presented in this paper for a hyperspectral Monte Carlo and a hyperspectral layered analytical iterative model of radiative transport within turbid shallow water types. Images at the selected wavelengths or channels centered at 490, 530 and 680 nm suggests the two models provide quite similar results when displayed as RGB images. The techniques are demonstrated to …
Nonrandom Dispersal And Local Adaptation, Jay F. Storz
Nonrandom Dispersal And Local Adaptation, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
Two recent studies of wild bird populations provide new insights into mechanisms of microevolutionary change by revealing how variation in fitness-related traits may be maintained over very small spatial scales.
When a population is distributed across a heterogeneous environment, the prospects for local adaptation depend on the spatial scale of fitness variation relative to the spatial scale of dispersal. If the patchiness of environmental conditions is too “fine-grained,” the spatial acuity of natural selection may be severely diminished by the homogenizing effects of gene flow (García-Ramos and Kirkpatrick, 1997; Lenormand, 2002). For example, habitat variation over a scale of several …

In animals and plants, innate immunity is regulated by nucleotide binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) proteins that mediate pathogen recognition and that activate host-cell defense responses [1, 2]. Plant NB-LRR proteins, referred to as R proteins, have amino-terminal domains that contain a coiled coil (CC) or that share similarity with animal Toll and interleukin 1 receptors (TIR) [3]. To investigate R protein function, we are using the TIR-NB-LRR protein N that mediates resistance against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) [4] through recognition of the TMV p50 protein. Here, we describe N requirement gene 1 (NRG1), a novel N-resistance component that …
Descriptive Trademarks And The First Amendment, Lisa P. Ramsey
Descriptive Trademarks And The First Amendment, Lisa P. Ramsey
University of San Diego Law and Economics Research Paper Series
The protection of exclusive rights in descriptive trademarks is an unconstitutional restriction of speech under the First Amendment. Trademark laws that prohibit a competitor from using trademarked descriptive words to sell a product fail to satisfy the Central Hudson test for evaluating the constitutionality of commercial speech regulations. The use of a descriptive term to accurately describe a product is not misleading expression regardless of whether another business claims trademark rights in that term. Although the government has a substantial interest in protecting the ability of consumers to identify and distinguish among the products of a business and its competitors, …
Canonical Construction And Statutory Revisionism: The Strange Case Of The Appropriations Canon, Daniel B. Rodriguez, Mathew D. Mccubbins
Canonical Construction And Statutory Revisionism: The Strange Case Of The Appropriations Canon, Daniel B. Rodriguez, Mathew D. Mccubbins
University of San Diego Law and Economics Research Paper Series
In this article, we consider the impact of positive political theory on legislative interpretation and, in particular, the debate over interpretive canons. Our vehicle for this consideration is the appropriations canon. By virtue of this canon, courts construe narrowly legislative changes to statutes made through the appropriations process. We consider the underlying logic and rationale of this canon -- essentially, that the appropriations process is unrepresentative and insufficiently deliberative -- and use this analysis to investigate, more broadly, the processes of canonical construction in the modern statutory interpretation jurisprudence. Canonical construction, we argue, must be attentive to the equilibrium effects …

Regression Analysis Of Dissolved Heavy Metals In Storm Water Runoff From Elevated Roadways, Ruben Erlacher
Regression Analysis Of Dissolved Heavy Metals In Storm Water Runoff From Elevated Roadways, Ruben Erlacher
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This proposed research focused on the prediction and identification of dissolved heavy metals in storm water runoff from elevated roadways. Storm water runoff from highways transports a significant load of contaminants, especially heavy metals and particulate matter, to receiving waters. Heavy metals, either in dissolved or particulatebound phases, are unique in the fact that unlike organic compounds, they are not degraded in the environment. The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model to relate dissolved heavy metal concentration to different measurable parameters which are easily available and routinely measurable for elevated roadways. The reliability of the developed …
