Paediatrics Publications
Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, and often results from functional placental insufficiency. Placentation requires extensive vasculogenesis and subsequent angiogenesis, in both maternal and fetal tissues. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) and Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) are angiogenic growth factors expressed in the placenta, and compete for binding to a common receptor, Tunica interna endothelial cell kinase-2 (Tie-2). Our objective was to examine Ang-1, Ang-2 and Tie-2 expression in ovine placental tissue obtained from normal and FGR pregnancies throughout gestation. Fetal cotyledon and maternal caruncle tissue concentrations of Ang-1, Ang-2 and Tie-2 mRNA were assessed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase …

Final FRDC Report - Project 2000/134
The purpose of this project was to collect the biological and fishery information necessary to conduct a stock assessment of the sandbar (known locally as ‘thickskin’) shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus and to improve and update the existing stock assessment for the dusky shark, Carcharhinus obscurus. Results from this project have already been used by the Western Australian Department of Fisheries to determine appropriate management arrangements for the State’s shark fisheries to ensure the sustainable exploitation of these species. Results have also assisted the WA target-shark fisheries in conducting Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) assessment in order …

Interactive Animated Concept Map Generation - Using Dynamic Animations, Suneel Vana
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
We present a visualization tool, which is useful for the illustration of educational concepts using interactive animated concept maps. This system serves as a presentation tool which provides a collection of multimedia elements (images, animations, audios clips and video clips), a collection of animated presentation templates and an interface by using which users can retrieve the multimedia elements from the multimedia database and generate the dynamic animations by placing the selected elements into the placeholders of the templates. The system generates the animated presentation by replacing embedded multimedia objects and their properties as desired by its users. A multimedia information …

Investigation Of Breast Tumor Hemodynamics By Near Infrared Spectroscopy: Applications To Cancer Therapy Monitoring, Jae Gwan Kim
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Hyperoxic gas interventions using carbogen (95% O2 and 5% CO2) or oxygen has been tried to increase the tumor oxygenation since it will enhance the therapeutic effects on the tumors. Others in the laboratory had previously applied near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to monitor the changes in tumor blood oxygenation during hyperoxic gas intervention and found that oxyhemoglobin concentration changes (D[HbO2]) during gas intervention can be fitted by a two-exponential equation containing two time constants. Based on the model, they formed a hypothesis that changes in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration result from well perfused and poorly perfused regions of an animal tumor …

Infection Of An Invasive Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui By The Chytrid Fungus Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis In Hawaii, Karen H. Beard, Eric M. O'Neill
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has contributed to declines and extinctions of amphibians worldwide. B. dendrobatidis is known to infect the frog Eleutherodactylus coqui in its native Puerto Rico. E. coqui was accidentally introduced into Hawaii in the late 1980s, where there are now hundreds of populations. B. dendrobatidis was being considered as a biological control agent for E. coqui because there are no native amphibians in Hawaii. Using a DNA-based assay, we tested 382 E. coqui from Hawaii for B. dendrobatidis and found that 2.4% are already infected. We found infected frogs in four of 10 study sites and …

Medicaid Third-Party Liability And Claims For Restitution: Defining The Proper Role For The Tort System In Regulating The Food Industry, Coby Warren Logan
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This comment contends that tort liability can complement legislative and administrative government regulation of the food industry, providing sellers and manufacturers of food with an incentive to prevent consumers from over-consumption and becoming obese. Specifically, this comment supports the proposition that after government regulations are promulgated by Congress, claims should be allowed by state attorneys general to recoup Medicaid costs incurred in treating health conditions and illnesses caused by obesity.
Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer
Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Philosophers have struggled with value theory as one of the most recalcitrant problems for environmental ethics. Theologians can benefit from their efforts when retrieving and reworking notions about the goodness of creation in patristic and medieval texts, particularly those by Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Thomas Aquinas. This process yields a religiously motivated rationale for intrinsic-instrumental valuing of the physical world's constituents for themselves, their relationships to one another, and their common good that can be relevant, meaningful, and helpful for responding to ecological degradation.

Sex-Based Differences In Regulatory T Cells., Lum Doreen Nebane-Ambe 1975-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Females have a higher incidence of autoimmune diseases than males for reasons that are currently unknown. CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells play an important role in the maintenance of immunological homeostasis and self-tolerance by suppressing autoreactive T cells that could potentially cause autoimmune diseases. Given that autoimmune diseases are more prevalent in women compared to men, we hypothesized that sex steroids could influence the incidence and/or progression of autoimmune disease through an effect on CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cell number and/or function. The overall objective of this project was then to determine whether sex steroids mediate sex-based differences in CD4+CD25+ regulatory T …

Explore The Murine Cardiac 20s Proteasomes : Molecular Composition And Regulation., Chenggong Zong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
20S proteasome, essential component of protein degradation mechanism, is important to maintain homeostasis. Its malfunctions have been associated with several pathological conditions. This study presents an extensive study of murine cardiac 20S proteasome. Using biochemical methods, 20S proteasome have been purified to 95%. Proteomic study identified all 20S proteasome subunits. Endogenous phosphorylation was also documented. Furthermore, several associating kinases and phosphatase were identified. They regulated its activities. In PKCå over-expression mice, 20S proteasome expression level was up-regulated, but its peptidase activities did not increase. áB crystallin were recruited to PKCå subproteome in the transgenic mice, which also associated with 20S …

Physis And Nomos In Aristotle's Ethics, Thornton C. Lockwood
Physis And Nomos In Aristotle's Ethics, Thornton C. Lockwood
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In Nicomachean Ethics V.7, Aristotle claims that political justice (to dikaion politikon) possesses a “natural” (phusikon) pail and a “conventional” (nomikon) part In response to those who separated nature and convention and disparaged the latter because it was different from place to place, Aristotle claims that both nature and convention admit of variation, and his language suggests that the two are ultimately parts which need to be interwoven or combined. Scholars who have struggled with Aristotle’s apparently disparate senses of the idea of nature have assumed that nature is an ethical ideal which can be separated from and serve as …

Fall Field Report, August–November 2005, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
This fall was notable for its lack of notable events; numbers of migrants reported in all species groups, especially waterfowl, shorebirds, and warblers, were low. Lingering birds were both insectivores and seed-eaters, and, coupled with a rather stable fall weather-wise, it seems that there were no disturbances to concentrate birds or otherwise impede a steady flow of migrants through the state. Without concentrations, migrants are often not noticed or, more accurately here, not reported by observers.
The best Western Grebe count was 2500, very low relative to expected high fall counts of at least 20,000. Mergansers were the only bright …
