Towards A Cosmopolitan Vision Of Conflict Of Laws: Redefining Governmental Interests In A Global Era, Paul Schiff Berman Jul 2005

Towards A Cosmopolitan Vision Of Conflict Of Laws: Redefining Governmental Interests In A Global Era, Paul Schiff Berman

ExpressO

It has now been ten years since the idea of global online communication first entered the popular consciousness. And while the internet has undoubtedly opened up new worlds of interaction and cooperation across borders, this increased transnational activity has also at times inspired parochialism, at least among the legislatures and courts of nation-states around the globe. Thus, we have seen a slew of national laws and court decisions purporting to regulate a wide variety of online activities, from gambling to chat rooms to auction sites, and seeking to enforce territorially based rules regarding trademarks, contractual relations, privacy norms, “indecent” content, …

Tauser Killed Both Dogs And Other Suburban American Family Folklore, Kristina Whitley Gashler Jul 2005

Tauser Killed Both Dogs And Other Suburban American Family Folklore, Kristina Whitley Gashler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to answer the questions "What purposes do family pets and the narratives we tell about them serve in modern American society?" and "What do these stories tell us about what Americans value and about where we locate our ‘value center’?" In Chapter 1, I discuss how Americans define loyalty in our pets now that our animals generally no longer help us work. I conclude that since the shift from agricultural to suburban settings, animals prove their loyalty individually and in human-like ways, rather than as "good" members of their own species, but at the same time because …

Origin Of The Eumetazoa: Testing Ecological Predictions Of Molecular Clocks Against The Proterozoic Fossil Record, Kevin J. Peterson, Nicholas J. Butterfield Jul 2005

Origin Of The Eumetazoa: Testing Ecological Predictions Of Molecular Clocks Against The Proterozoic Fossil Record, Kevin J. Peterson, Nicholas J. Butterfield

Dartmouth Scholarship

Molecular clocks have the potential to shed light on the timing of early metazoan divergences, but differing algorithms and calibration points yield conspicuously discordant results. We argue here that competing molecular clock hypotheses should be testable in the fossil record, on the principle that fundamentally new grades of animal organization will have ecosystem-wide impacts. Using a set of seven nuclear-encoded protein sequences, we demonstrate the paraphyly of Porifera and calculate sponge/eumetazoan and cnidarian/bilaterian divergence times by using both distance [minimum evolution (ME)] and maximum likelihood (ML) molecular clocks; ME brackets the appearance of Eumetazoa between 634 and 604 Ma, whereas …

Tgf-Β Maintains Dormancy Of Prostatic Stem Cells In The Proximal Region Of Ducts, Sarah N. Salm, Patricia E. Burger, Sandra Coetzee, Ken Goto, David Moscatelli, E. Lynette Wilson Jul 2005

Tgf-Β Maintains Dormancy Of Prostatic Stem Cells In The Proximal Region Of Ducts, Sarah N. Salm, Patricia E. Burger, Sandra Coetzee, Ken Goto, David Moscatelli, E. Lynette Wilson

Publications and Research

We have previously shown that prostatic stem cells are located in the proximal region of mouse prostatic ducts. Here, we show that this region responds differently to transforming growth factor (TGF)-β than the distal ductal region and that under physiological conditions androgens and TGF-β are crucial overall regulators of prostatic tissue homeostasis. This conclusion is supported by the observations showing that high levels of TGF-β signaling are present in the quiescent proximal region of ducts in an androgen-replete animal and that cells in this region overexpress Bcl-2, which protects them from apoptosis. Moreover, androgen ablation reverses the proximal-distal TGF-β signaling …

Late Pleistocene Panthera Leo Spelaea (Goldfuss, 1810) Skeletons From The Czech Republic (Central Europe); Their Pathological Cranial Features And Injuries Resulting From Intraspecific Fights, Conflicts With Hyenas, And Attacks On Cave Bears, Cajus G. Diedrich

KIP Articles

The world’s first mounted "skeletons" of the Late Pleistocene Panthera leo spelaea (Goldfuss, 1810) from the Sloup Cave hyena and cave bear den in the Moravian Karst (Czech Republic, central Europe) are compilations that have used bones from several different individuals. These skeletons are described and compared with the most complete known skeleton in Europe from a single individual, a lioness skeleton from the hyena den site at the Srbsko Chlum-Komín Cave in the Bohemian Karst (Czech Republic). Pathological features such as rib fractures and brain-case damage in these specimens, and also in other skulls from the Zoolithen Cave (Germany) …

Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Fragmentation: Edge Effects On Zooplankton, Macroinvertebrate, And Larval Fish Communities, Keto F. Gyekis Jul 2005

Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Fragmentation: Edge Effects On Zooplankton, Macroinvertebrate, And Larval Fish Communities, Keto F. Gyekis

Masters Theses

Wetlands are some of the most diverse and ecologically important habitats in the world. Although wetlands have been plagued by anthropogenic destruction and disturbance, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding how fragmentation affects these systems. During the summer of 2004 and the spring and summer of 2005,1 investigated edge effects associated with anthropogenic fragmentation in 25 fringing marshes of Lakes Michigan and Huron. Environmental data, microcrustacean zooplankton, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and larval fish were collected along transects extending into each marsh from reference (natural) and anthropogenic (artificial) edges. Bulrush stems of Great Lakes fringing marshes attenuated the influx and …

Estimating The Impacts Of Differing Price-Risk Management Strategies On The Net Income Of Salinas Valley Lettuce Producers: A Stochastic Simulation Approach, Roland Fumasi, Wayne H. Howard, Jay E. Noel Jul 2005

Estimating The Impacts Of Differing Price-Risk Management Strategies On The Net Income Of Salinas Valley Lettuce Producers: A Stochastic Simulation Approach, Roland Fumasi, Wayne H. Howard, Jay E. Noel

Agribusiness

While government safety-net programs are used to mitigate the price risk for commodity producers, limited programs exist for specialty crop producers. Specialty crop producers utilize forward contracts to reduce downside price risk. In order to estimate the method of price-risk management, if any, that is preferable to selling at market determined prices, a stochastic simulation model was constructed. The completed simulation model was used to estimate probability distributions for Salinas Valley net income under different pricing scenarios. Probabilities of reaching various net income thresholds were compared. Results indicate that Salinas Valley lettuce producers should maximize profitability by using forward contracts.

The July 2003 Dakota Hailswaths: Creation, Characteristics, And Possible Impacts, Matthew D. Parker, Ian Ratcliffe, Geoffrey M. Henebry

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The authors investigate the meteorology associated with two elongated swaths of crop damage produced by severe hailstorms that crossed North Dakota and South Dakota on 4 July and 20 July 2003. These hailswaths, which were observed in a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) image time series, each persisted for more than a month and were associated with local temperature increases, presumably owing to the enhanced Bowen ratio over dry, crop-free ground. This paper documents the creation and evolution of the convective storms that produced the hailswaths, and then presents evidence that devegetated hailswaths may impact …

Formative Research For Hygiene Promotion In Kyrgyzstan, Adam Biran, Anara Tabyshalieva, Zumrat Salmorbekova Jul 2005

Formative Research For Hygiene Promotion In Kyrgyzstan, Adam Biran, Anara Tabyshalieva, Zumrat Salmorbekova

History Faculty Research

Formative research for hygiene promotion was used to gather data relating to hygiene practices in rural Kyrgyzstan. Some of the hand-washing and faeces disposal practices observed were sub-optimal from a public health perspective. In combination with the poverty, limited medical services and poor water supply infrastructure characteristic of the study area, it is likely that these factors increase the risk of diarrhoeal infections among Kyrgyz children. An association was found between increased rates of hand-washing following latrine use and ownership of a washstand. This offers some empirical support for the idea that promotion of hand-washing technologies can form a useful …
