Facing The Caree/Family Dichotomy: Traditional College Women's Perspectives, Lisa Michelle Leavitt Jul 2005

Facing The Caree/Family Dichotomy: Traditional College Women's Perspectives, Lisa Michelle Leavitt

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the experience of 32 traditional college freshmen women as they sought to choose a career with the idea of balancing career and family in the future. A traditional woman was defined as a woman whose central value system and cultural mores emphasize homemaking and childrearing as their primary role. Guided interviews were conducted to obtain in-depth descriptions of participants' experience. The interviews were transcribed and interpreted using a synthesis of qualitative methods based on Kvale's method. The six themes were as follows: 1. The concept of balancing careers and family life is not being discussed or …

Pretend Play At Home: Creating An Educationally Enriched Environment For Emergent Literacy Among Preschool-Aged Children, Kelly King Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will illustrate how pretend play can be used in the home for educational purposes. The major emphasis of the work will be emergent literacy, however, application principles can be applied in all subject areas. Parents who desire to expand their child's literacy skills while exposing the child to an arts enriched home environment need ideas and tools developed with supportive research to strengthen and focus their efforts. These tools will greatly expand parental resources by offering several principles as a guide for adapting existing classroom materials for home use. The following Seven Components form the core foundation for …

Enhancement Of Calcium-Dependent Afterpotentials In Oxytocin Neurons Of The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus During Lactation, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong Jul 2005

Enhancement Of Calcium-Dependent Afterpotentials In Oxytocin Neurons Of The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus During Lactation, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

The firing pattern of oxytocin (OT) hormone synthesizing neurons changes dramatically immediately before each milk ejection, when a brief burst of action potentials is discharged. OT neurons possess intrinsic currents that would modulate this burst. Our previous studies showed the amplitude of the Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarization (AHP) following spike trains is significantly larger during lactation. In the present study we sought to determine which component of the AHP is enhanced, and whether the enhancement could be related to changes in whole-cell Ca2+ current or the Ca2+ transient in identified OT or vasopressin (VP) neurons during lactation. We confirmed, with whole-cell current-clamp …

Recent Advances On The Taxonomy, Systematics And Epidemiology Of Trichinella, E. Pozio, D.S. Zarlenga Jul 2005

Recent Advances On The Taxonomy, Systematics And Epidemiology Of Trichinella, E. Pozio, D.S. Zarlenga

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Since Owen first described Trichinella as a human pathogen in 1835, the number of organisms comprising this genus has grown dramatically. Where it was once thought to be a monospecific group, this genus is now comprised of eight species and three additional genotypic variants that have yet to be taxonomically defined. Along with the growth in the genus and description of the parasites has come a concomitant increase in our understanding of the epidemiology and geographical distribution of these organisms. Recent expansion of the non-encapsulated group to include three species biologically defined by their unique host ranges encompassing mammals, birds …

Land Grabbers, Toadstool Worshippers, And The Sagebrush Rebellion In Utah, 1979-1981, Jedediah S. Rogers Jul 2005

Land Grabbers, Toadstool Worshippers, And The Sagebrush Rebellion In Utah, 1979-1981, Jedediah S. Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

In 1979, a handful of Nevada state officials sparked a movement to transfer the large unappropriated domain to the western states. For two years what became known as the Sagebrush Rebellion swept across the American West like brushfire, engaging westerners of all stripes in a heated dispute over the question of the public lands. In Utah, as elsewhere in the West, public officials, rural ranchers, miners, developers, academics, environmentalists, and concerned citizens joined the debate and staked sides. This episode underscored western relationships between people and nature and featured contests over competing ideologies in the West. But it probably did …

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor Jul 2005

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor

Theses and Dissertations

The physiological responses of angiotensin II (Ang II) are mediated across the cell membrane through the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), a heptahelical membrane protein coupled to trimeric G-proteins on the cytosolic side. AT1R on binding its ligand, Ang II, leads to downregulation of cell-surface receptor and also its mRNA. We have investigated whether the 3'- and 5'-untranslated regions of the human AT1R mRNA mediate the degradation of hAT1R mRNA by post-transcriptional mechanisms in human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line (H295R cells). Protein kinase C (PKC) activator, phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), showed that the downregulation of hAT1R mRNA is mediated by the …

Visualizing And Interacting With Externally Coupled Engineering Analysis Results, Paul Frederick Nelson Jul 2005

Visualizing And Interacting With Externally Coupled Engineering Analysis Results, Paul Frederick Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Visualizing and interacting with engineering analysis results can provide valuable insights into a system's performance and aid in engineering decision-making. Currently, the majority of analysis codes are developed as isolated solutions focusing only on the most prominent physical influence to a system, such as thermal, structural, fluid, etc. Frequently, more than one of these physical influences combined to force engineers to evaluate complex, coupled systems. Coupled analysis codes are becoming more common place tools for engineers demanding high fidelity simulations of complex systems. External code coupling solutions are emerging to permit generic coupling of separate, world class CAE solvers thus …

Calmodulin And Pf6 Are Components Of A Complex That Localizes To The C1 Microtubule Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus, Matthew J. Wargo, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith Jul 2005

Calmodulin And Pf6 Are Components Of A Complex That Localizes To The C1 Microtubule Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus, Matthew J. Wargo, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

Studies of flagellar motility in Chlamydomonas mutants lacking specific central apparatus components have supported the hypothesis that the inherent asymmetry of this structure provides important spatial cues for asymmetric regulation of dynein activity. These studies have also suggested that specific projections associated with the C1 and C2 central tubules make unique contributions to modulating motility; yet, we still do not know the identities of most polypeptides associated with the central tubules. To identify components of the C1a projection, we took an immunoprecipitation approach using antibodies generated against PF6. The pf6 mutant lacks the C1a projection and possesses flagella that only …

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson Jul 2005

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogenase has a central role in the global nitrogen cycle as the enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of atmospheric N2 to NH3. Fixed nitrogen is generally limiting in the environment and in agriculture, so nitrogenase has received much attention as an alternative to nitrogen fertilizers. Characterizing the mechanism of nitrogenase is the goal of this work. The molybdenum nitrogenase enzyme system is comprised of the MoFe protein and the Fe protein. Interactions between these proteins and nucleotides are crucial to catalysis. An important approach to characterize these interactions is to correlate the kinetics of nitrogenase catalysis to a mechanism based …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Trypanosomosis is a major impediment to livestock farming in sub-Saharan Africa and limits the full potential of agricultural development in the 36 countries where it is endemic. In man, sleeping sickness is fatal if untreated and causes severe morbidity. This study was undertaken in western Kenya, an area that is endemic for both human and livestock trypanosomosis. While trypanosomosis in livestock is present at high levels of endemicity, sleeping sickness occurs at low levels over long periods, interspersed with epidemics, underscoring the complexity of the disease epidemiology. In this study, we sought to investigate the prevalence of trypanosomes in …

Homologous Strand Exchange And Dna Helicase Activities In Plant Mitochondria, Daqing Song Jul 2005

Homologous Strand Exchange And Dna Helicase Activities In Plant Mitochondria, Daqing Song

Theses and Dissertations

Homologous recombination is critical for generating genetic variation in living organisms by exchange and rearrangement of DNA. Most of our knowledge about homologous recombination is limited to processes in bacteria or in eukaryotic nuclei. In E. coli, homologous recombination is dependent on the RecA protein. Higher plant chloroplasts have RecA-like strand exchange activity. However, little is known about these mechanisms in higher plant mitochondria. I have detected a RecA-like strand exchange activity in soybean mitochondria. This activity forms joint molecules in the presence of ATP, Mg2+, and homologous DNA substrates. In addition, the E. coli single-stranded DNA binding (SSB) protein …

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra Jul 2005

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191–196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under similar environmental conditions without mating exposure. Bulls were observed during mating and assessed for breeding soundness and changes following mating. Bulls used for breeding (UFB) lost 77 kg …
