Haiti : Entre Capitalisme Et Socialisme, Nadine Bernard Aug 2005

Haiti : Entre Capitalisme Et Socialisme, Nadine Bernard

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This work explores the complexities of Haiti’s embattled destiny, and shows how the particular political, social, economic and culural history of Haiti has led the nation into an existential dead end. As a matter of fact, Haiti seems to be hampered by a deep historical divide, which finds its origin in the colonial history of the country, especially during slavery and later during the colonial period under France. Although mulattoes and blacks rebelled against slavery and fought together for their independence in 1804, they remained divided on the basis of race, culture and socioeconomic status for a long time to …

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey Aug 2005

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Complex systems, such as urban systems, emerge unpredictably without the influence of central control as a result of adaptive behavior by their component, interacting agents. This paper analyses city size distributions, by decade, from the south-western region of the United States for the years 1890–1990. It determines if the distributions were clustered and documents changes in the pattern of clusters over time. Clusters were determined utilizing a kernel density estimator and cluster analysis. The data were clustered as determined by both methods. The analyses identified 4–7 clusters of cities in each of the decades analysed. Cities cluster into size classes, …

Ecology Of The Missouri River: Missouri River Creel Survey, Bellevue Bridge To Camp Creek, 3 April Through 29 May 2004, Gerald Mestl

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's strategic plan has stated the following management goal for the Missouri River: Restore, protect, and maintain the diversity of historic Missouri River habitats, resources, and ecosystem functions in order that present and future generations may enjoy consumptive and non-consumptive outdoor recreational opportunities (NGPC 1996). To accomplish this goal the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission identified the following five objectives: • To restore terrestrial and aquatic floodplain habitat types by 2008. This would include old oxbows, chutes, side channels, sand bars, backwaters, wetlands, and other shallow water habitats. To restore ftows that reflect the natural …

Age And Quality Of Ground Water And Sources Of Nitrogen In The Surficial Aquifers In Pumpkin Creek Valley, Western Nebraska, 2000, G. V. Steele, J. C. Cannia, S. S. Sibray, V. L. Mcguire

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Ground water is the source of drinking water for the residents of Pumpkin Creek Valley, western Nebraska. In this largely agricultural area, shallow aquifers potentially are susceptible to nitrate contamination. During the last 10 years, ground-water levels in the North Platte Natural Resources District have declined and contamination has become a major problem for the district. In 2000, the U.S. Geological Survey and the North Platte Natural Resources District began a cooperative study to determine the age and quality of the ground water and the sources of nitrogen in the aquifers in Pumpkin Creek Valley.

Water samples were collected from …

Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District Bird List, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Aug 2005

Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District Bird List, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Rainwater Basin of south central Nebraska has attracted millions of migratory birds each spring for generations. During migration, millions of snow geese, Canada geese, white-fronted geese, ducks, and 1/2-million sandhill cranes use the Rainwater Basin and the adjacent Platte River. The shallow wetland basins and surrounding croplands of the area provide the birds with critical resting and feeding sites during their migration north. The Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) of the Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District (WMD) are managed as grassland-playa lake ecosystems. The Rainwater Basin WMO staff currently manages 59 WPAs in the Rainwater Basin. Most of the WPAs …

There are many steps to finding and getting the right job, and this process can be challenging. Many job seekers have found that breaking the job search down into a series of small, workable tasks makes the process much more manageable. It also gives the job seeker a sense of accomplishment when each task is completed. A 30-Day Placement Plan is one way to keep tasks in order.

Habitat-Specific Diet Of The Mottled Sculpin And Its Impact On Benthic Invertebrate Community Structure, Brendan M. Earl Aug 2005

Habitat-Specific Diet Of The Mottled Sculpin And Its Impact On Benthic Invertebrate Community Structure, Brendan M. Earl

Masters Theses

The relationships between predators and their prey are important and influential components in the structure of ecological communities. These interactions not only impact the species involved, but can also have a wide range of direct and indirect effects that resonate throughout the community. In Michigan trout streams, one of the main predators of benthic invertebrates is the mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi) whose diet and selective predation may influence benthic invertebrate community structure. Using gastric lavage, the stomach contents of sculpins from both erosional and depositional habitats were collected and analyzed to determine the main prey types, prey preference, …

Structure-Activity Relationship Studies On Thioxolone Compounds As Inhibitors Of Human Carbonic Anhydrase Ii, Jared Nyabuto Orwenyo Aug 2005

Structure-Activity Relationship Studies On Thioxolone Compounds As Inhibitors Of Human Carbonic Anhydrase Ii, Jared Nyabuto Orwenyo

Masters Theses

Carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) is a zinc metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. The role of this reaction in physiology has made it a target of many therapeutic approaches. Most CA II inhibitors currently known are sulfonamide-based and this is the only functional group incorporated into rationally designed CA II inhibitors. Thioxolone (6-hydroxy-1, 3-benzoxathiol-2-one), is a non-sulfonamide that has been found to have CA II inhibitory activity.

Thioxolone and its analogs were studied to evaluate the inhibition activity that can be achieved upon modification of the thioxolone molecule. IC50 values and dissociation constants were determined …

Harmonic Imaging Using A Mechanical Sector, B-Mode, Danna Gurari Aug 2005

Harmonic Imaging Using A Mechanical Sector, B-Mode, Danna Gurari

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An ultrasound imaging system includes transmitting ultrasound waves into a human body, collecting the reflections, manipulating the reflections, and then displaying them on computer screen as a grayscale image. The standard approach for ultrasound imaging is to use the fundamental frequency from the reflected signal to form images. However, it has been shown that images generated using the harmonic content have improved resolution as well as reduced noise, resulting in clearer images. Although harmonic imaging has been shown to return improved images, this has never been shown with a B-mode, mechanical sector ultrasound system. In this thesis, we demonstrated such …

The Effect And Mechanism Of Action Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Catabolism Of Progesterone, Darron Louis Smith Aug 2005

The Effect And Mechanism Of Action Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Catabolism Of Progesterone, Darron Louis Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Factors that affect the clearance of progesterone by the hepatocyte were examined. In study one, the objective was to determine if increased hepatic portal acetate or propionate could alter hepatic metabolism of progesterone. Serum concentrations of progesterone after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate began to diverge as early as 0.5 h and were different (P < 0.05) at 3-h and 4-h for ewe lambs gavaged with acetate or propionate, respectively. Increasing portal vein propionate reduced progesterone clearance. In study two, the objective was to determine the effect of a single oral gavage of either acetate or propionate on peripheral concentrations of insulin and glucagon in the ewe. Serum concentrations of insulin, after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate, were different (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h and 1 h for ewe lambs orally-gavaged with acetate and propionate, respectively. Further, serum concentrations of glucagon, after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate, were different (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h, 1 h and 2 h for ewe lambs orally-gavaged with acetate and propionate, respectively. The last study determined progesterone clearance in response to challenge with different concentrations of insulin, glucagon or a combination of insulin and glucagon in a hepatic cell line. In response to a challenge with insulin, there was a dose dependant decrease in the disappearance of progesterone. There was a reduction (P < 0.05) in the rate of decay with the addition of 0.1 nM insulin. Further, there was a greater reduction (P < 0.05) in the rate of decay in response to 1.0 and 10 nM insulin than control and 0.1 nM insulin. There was no observable change in the disappearance of progesterone with either physiological (0.01 nM) or pharmacological (0.1 and 1.0 nM) treatment with glucagon. Pharmocological concentrations of glucagon (1.0 nM) negated the effects of either 0.1 or 1.0 nM insulin on the clearance of progesterone. However, with physiological concentrations of glucagon (0.01 nM) and 1.0 nM insulin, glucagon was not able to negate the reduction in progesterone disappearance caused by insulin.

Executive Exposure: Government Secrecy, Constitutional Law, And Platforms For Judicial Elaboration, Adam M. Samaha Aug 2005

Executive Exposure: Government Secrecy, Constitutional Law, And Platforms For Judicial Elaboration, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

American law never reached a satisfying conclusion about public access to information on government operations. But recent events are prompting reconsideration. As our current system is reassessed, three shortfalls in past debates should be overcome. The first involves ignorance of foreign systems. Other democracies grapple with information access problems, and their recent experiments are illuminating. Indeed they expose two additional domestic weaknesses. One is a line we have drawn within constitutional law. Courts and commentators tend to treat constitutional issues of public access separately from those of executive discretion to withhold information. These matters should be seen as parts of …

The experience demonstrated that active group interventions may have potential for persons whose mobility and movement in life …

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Gnrh Receptor Gene In Lines Of Swine Divergent For Ovulation Rate, Emily A. Mcdonald Aug 2005

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Gnrh Receptor Gene In Lines Of Swine Divergent For Ovulation Rate, Emily A. Mcdonald

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The interaction between GnRH and its receptor on gonadotropes within the anterior pituitary gland represents a central point for regulation of reproduction. Additionally, the close proximity of the porcine GnRHR gene to a quantitative trait locus for ovulation rate makes it a positional candidate for genes influencing ovulation rate. We isolated the GnRHR gene promoter from three lines of swine (Control, Index and Meishan) with different ovulation rates. Transient transfection of gonadotrope-derived αT3-1 cells with vectors containing approximately 5000 bp of GnRHR gene promoter fused to the cDNA encoding luciferase resulted in a 2- to 4-fold difference in luciferase activity …

Expression Analysis Of Gnrh Responsive Anterior Pituitary Genes In Lines Of Swine Divergent For Ovulation Rate, Benjamin E. Bass Aug 2005

Expression Analysis Of Gnrh Responsive Anterior Pituitary Genes In Lines Of Swine Divergent For Ovulation Rate, Benjamin E. Bass

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The interaction of GnRH with its receptor represents a crucial point for control of reproduction. Additionally, the porcine GnRH receptor (GnRHR) gene is a positional candidate for genes influencing reproductive efficiency, residing in a similar chromosomal region as a QTL for ovulation rate (OR). Gonadotropic gene expression in lines of swine divergent for OR may provide insight into the phenomena of increased litter size. Chinese Meishan (OR=14.5), a white crossbred line selected based on an index of OR and embryonic survival (OR=17.8), and a Control line (OR=13.2) were evaluated. Following three (Index and Control) or six (Meishan) estrous cycles, gilts …

Use Of Chromium Picolinate And Biotin In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: An Economic Analysis, Joseph P. Fuhr Jr., Hope He, Neil Goldfarb, David B. Nash Aug 2005

Use Of Chromium Picolinate And Biotin In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: An Economic Analysis, Joseph P. Fuhr Jr., Hope He, Neil Goldfarb, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

This paper addresses the potential economic benefits of chromium picolinate plus biotin (Diachrome ®) use in people with Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The economic model was developed to estimate the impact on health care systems’ costs by improved HbA1C levels with chromium picolinate plus biotin (Diachrome). Lifetimes cost savings were estimated by adjusting a benchmark from the literature, using a price index to adjust for inflation. The cost of diabetes is highly dependent on the HbA1C level with higher initial levels and higher annual increments increasing the cost. Improvement in glycemic control has proven to be cost-effective in delaying the …

A Theory In Search Of A Court, And Itself: Judicial Minimalism At The Supreme Court Bar, Neil S. Siegel Aug 2005

A Theory In Search Of A Court, And Itself: Judicial Minimalism At The Supreme Court Bar, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

Cass Sunstein has prominently and provocatively advocated a theory of judicial minimalism. He has claimed that minimalism provides both an accurate descriptive account of how the Supreme Court decides constitutional cases and a persuasive normative theory of how the Justices should exercise their power of judicial review. In fact, he has written that the October 2003 Term demonstrates the Court's commitment to judicial minimalism.

In this Article, I demonstrate a deep tension between Professor Sunstein's aspiration that minimalism serve as an empirically testable (and thus descriptively accurate) account of the Supreme Court's work, and his ambition that minimalism provide a …

Selective Breeding For High Endurance Running Increases Hindlimb Symmetry, Theodore Garland Jr., Patricia W. Freeman Aug 2005

Selective Breeding For High Endurance Running Increases Hindlimb Symmetry, Theodore Garland Jr., Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Comparative studies provide correlational evidence of morphological adaptations for high locomotor performance, such as the classical indicators of cursoriality in mammals, long limbs and high metatarsal/femur ratios. More recently, enlarged femoral condyles have been suggested as an adaptation for high endurance running in the genus Homo. Asymmetry of locomotor appendages should adversely affect locomotor abilities, but this has not been studied in a rigorous evolutionary context. We used experimental evolution to test for morphological adaptations associated with high voluntary wheel running in selectively bred lines of mice. Surprisingly, the classical indicators of cursoriality had not evolved in concert with …

Attitudes Mediate The Association Between Childhood Disciplinary History And Disciplinary Responses, Mary Bower-Russa Aug 2005

Attitudes Mediate The Association Between Childhood Disciplinary History And Disciplinary Responses, Mary Bower-Russa

Peer Reviewed Articles

According to recent estimates, childhood abuse victims are at 12 times higher risk for child abuse perpetration than those without such abusive histories. This study focused on delineation of the mechanisms by which intergenerational patterns of abuse may occur and, in particular, the role that disciplinary attitudes may play in mediating the relation between disciplinary history and risk for abusive parenting. Participants (n = 459) completed a series of questionnaires to assess childhood history, disciplinary attitudes, and disciplinary practices. Structural equation modeling indicated that the association between disciplinary history and disciplinary responses was partially mediated by attitudes, with more than …

The Effects Of Ethnicity, Gender, And Urgency Of A Message On Prosocial Behavior, Orlando Rodriguez Aug 2005

The Effects Of Ethnicity, Gender, And Urgency Of A Message On Prosocial Behavior, Orlando Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A study by Christensen et al. (1998) looked at prosocial behavior toward strangers via responses to wrong-number messages on a telephone answering machine and found a higher than anticipated prosocial response. However, additional research was required in order to determine whether or not manipulation of gender and ethnicity would have produced different results. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of gender (male or female) of the caller, ethnicity (white-non Hispanic or Mexican American) of the caller, and urgency ("low," "medium," "high," & "high with prod") of a message on telephone helping behavior. One hundred …

Extraocular Muscle Activity, Rapid Eye Movements And The Development Of Active And Quiet Sleep, Adele M. H. Seelke, Andrew J. Gall, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Mark S. Blumberg Aug 2005

Extraocular Muscle Activity, Rapid Eye Movements And The Development Of Active And Quiet Sleep, Adele M. H. Seelke, Andrew J. Gall, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

Rapid eye movements (REMs), traditionally measured using the electrooculogram (EOG), help to characterize active sleep in adults. In early infancy, however, they are not clearly expressed. Here we measured extraocular muscle activity in infant rats at 3 days of age (P3), P8 and P14-15 in order to assess the ontogeny of REMs and their relationship with other forms of sleep-related phasic activity. We found that the causal relationship between extraocular muscle twitches and REMs strengthened during the first two postnatal weeks, reflecting increased control of the extraocular muscles over eye movements. As early as P3, however, phasic bursts of extraocular …

Tcpf Is A Soluble Colonization Factor And Protective Antigen Secreted By El Tor And Classical O1 And O139 Vibrio Cholerae Serogroups, Thomas J. Kirn, Ronald K. Taylor Aug 2005

Tcpf Is A Soluble Colonization Factor And Protective Antigen Secreted By El Tor And Classical O1 And O139 Vibrio Cholerae Serogroups, Thomas J. Kirn, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae causes diarrhea by colonizing the human small bowel and intoxicating epithelial cells. Colonization is a required step in pathogenesis, and strains defective for colonization are significantly attenuated. The best-characterized V. cholerae colonization factor is the toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP). It has been demonstrated that TCP is required for V. cholerae colonization in both humans and mice. TCP enhances bacterial interactions that allow microcolony formation and thereby promotes survival in the intestine. We have recently discovered that the TCP biogenesis apparatus also serves as a secretion system, mediating the terminal step in the extracellular secretion pathway of TcpF. TcpF was …

Aspects Of Fatherhood In Thirteenth-Century Encyclopedias, Philip Grace Aug 2005

Aspects Of Fatherhood In Thirteenth-Century Encyclopedias, Philip Grace

Masters Theses

The thesis examines the treatment of fatherhood in Thomas of Cantimpré's Liber de Natura Rerum, Bartholomaeus Anglicus' De Proprietatibus Rerum, and Vincent of Beauvais' Speculum Maius, all of whom were influential mendicant encyclopedists writing between 1240 and 1260. The study examines sections on anatomy, the ages of man, family relations, and the theology of marriage. The thesis argues that the anatomical concept of heat functioned as a metaphor for masculinity, strength and intelligence, and linked together such aspects of fatherhood as the father's formative role in conception and the responsibility to instill virtue in and provide for …
