Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Is Critical For Ischemic Remodeling, Mural Cell Recruitment, And Blood Flow Reserve, Jun Yu, Ebu D. Demuinck, Zhenwu Zhuang, Mary Drinane
Dartmouth Scholarship
The genetic loss of endothelial-derived nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in mice impairs vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and ischemia-initiated blood flow recovery resulting in critical limb ischemia. This result may occur through impaired arteriogenesis, angiogenesis, or mobilization of stem and progenitor cells. Here, we show that after ischemic challenge, eNOS knockout mice [eNOS (-/-)] have defects in arteriogenesis and functional blood flow reserve after muscle stimulation and pericyte recruitment, but no impairment in endothelial progenitor cell recruitment. More importantly, the defects in blood flow recovery, clinical manifestations of ischemia, ischemic reserve capacity, and pericyte recruitment into the growing neovasculature can …

Question: Can patterns of species frequency in an old-field be explained within the context of a metapopulation model? Are the patterns observed related to time, spatial scale, disturbance, and nutrient availability?
Location: Upland and lowland old-fields in Illinois, USA.
Method: Species richness was recorded annually for seven years following plowing of an upland and lowland old-field subject to crossed fertilizer and disturbance treatments (mowing and rototilling). Species occupancy distributions were assessed with respect to the numbers of core and satellite species.
Results: In both fields, species richness became higher in disturbed plots than in undisturbed plots over time, and decreased …

Technological Characteristics And R&D Alliance Form: Evidence From The U.S. Biotechnology Industry, Xia Wang
Technological Characteristics And R&D Alliance Form: Evidence From The U.S. Biotechnology Industry, Xia Wang
Economics Working Papers
This study seeks to advance and test the knowledge-based theory of the firm as it applies to explaining the governance structure of R&D alliances. Unlike transaction-cost economics, the knowledge-based theory attempts to explain organizational form not primarily in terms of incentive misalignment but in terms of the creation, acquisition, and coordination of productive capabilities. To study the role played by firm-specific technological competencies, I consider three technological characteristics of an alliance: technological similarity, technological relatedness, and technological diversity. With a sample of 111 biotech-biotech R&D alliances, I find that technological relatedness and diversity increase the probability that allying firms would …

Jackrabbit Football Media Guides (1950-2014)
On August 15, 2003, South Dakota State announced that the university would begin the process to reclassify from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I status. The reclassification process requires five years, starting with the 2003-04 exploratory season and ending with an evaluation visit following the 2007-08 season. That would make SDSU a fullfledged member of NCAA Division I for the 2008-09 season. This year, 2005-06, is the Provisional Second Year meaning SDSU must be in full compliance with all Division I legislation and membership requirements including scholarship minimums and Division I scheduling.

Critical Literacy Vs. Reading Programs: Schooling As A Form Of Control, Roberto E. Bahruth
Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the United States, despite years of educational research demonstrating the ineffectiveness and harm caused by reading programs based upon a behaviorist paradigm, political mandates of state and federal programs insist upon their continued use. One might conclude that this insistence is born out of ignorance, however, it seems clear that the populations most harmed by these programs are the poor and minorities. Privileged class students are also harmed because of the "literalcy" (shallow "literacy") these programs produce. I discuss the politics of literacy and language programs in the United States and how they serve to oppress as they reproduce …

Geographical Distributions, Relative Abundance And Coexistence Of Drosophila Aldrichi And Drosophila Buzzatii In Australia, J. S.F. Barker, Robert A. Krebs, H. I. Davies
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Climatic data and collection records for the cactophilic Drosophila aldrichi and Drosophila buzzatii for 97 localities were used to examine the effects of geographical location, season, host plant species and climatic factors on their range and relative abundance. Temporal variation in relative abundance was assessed from monthly collections over 4 years at one locality. Effects of weather variables over the 28 days before each collection were examined. A generalized linear model of the spatial data showed significant geographical variation in relative abundance, and significant climatic effects, with the proportion of D. aldrichi higher in the warm season, and increasing as …

Some Steps To A Refined Rest Technology, Kai-Uwe Goss
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In the Remote Explosive Scent Tracing (REST) technology, air from a suspect site is passed through a filter in order to trap the target odor. The filter is then analyzed in a laboratory environment, usually by animals. Although REST is a potentially efficient technology for area reduction, it appears that there has not yet been any strict optimization of the technical procedure. The following work gives a theoretical analysis of the REST concept and first results of a lab study on the performance of various filters for the sampling of gaseous 2,4-DNT.

Between the Species
Moral debate over vegetarianism forms the backdrop to a preliminary consideration of the questions: Is it ethical to produce, sell and eat faux meat? Is it ethical to produce, sell and wear fake animal skin? Is it ethical to sell or wear secondhand or thriftshop genuine animal skin? If vegetarianism is morally required, the question of just what uses of nonhuman animals are ethical or unethical and on what grounds is always on tap. In this piece, I examine the above questions in light of deontological then utilitarian reasons for vegetarianism. I conclude deontological or animal rights grounds entail the …

The Species-Norm Account Of Moral Status, Scott D. Wilson
Between the Species
Many philosophers have argued against Singer’s claim that all animals are equal. However, none of these responses have demonstrated an appreciation of the complexity of his position. The result is that all of these responses focus on one of his arguments in a way that falls victim to another. This paper is a critical examination of a possible response to the full complexity of Singer’s position that derives from the work of Carl Cohen, Kathleen Wilkes, and F. Ramsey. On this response, a being’s moral status depends not on the capacities and abilities she does in fact have, but instead …

Continued from the November 2004 Word Ways. Because of the large number of new pre-J catch-up words this article rightly should be called "A-L". But no, tradition prevails over logic yet again, the three previous articles being A-C, D-F, and G-I.

Larger Letter Trees, Rex Gooch
Word Ways
In Word Ways 2005-103ff., Eric Iverson presented some 4-letter trees, and some trees with 5-letter words. As invited by the editor, I take up the search from there. Throughout, I assume that all words in a tree must be different. The reader should sympathize if there are any errors, for tracing a vast number of almost identical words through many trees is even worse than proofreading word ladders, and repeatedly reminded me of the famous motif from Zork: "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike".

There are thirteen playing card names consisting of 52 letters: TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE TEN JACK QUEEN KING ACE. What sort of wordplay is possible with these? To begin with, there is a crossword challenge-to arrange the words in a standard crossword array, in a rectangle of minimum size. Here is a 9x10 example that can possibly be improved.
