Fantasy, Vision, And Metaphor - Three Tracks To Teachers Minds, Dorit Tubin Sep 2005

Fantasy, Vision, And Metaphor - Three Tracks To Teachers Minds, Dorit Tubin

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores how the three concepts of vision, metaphor, and fantasy serve educational research for a better understanding of teachers’ minds regarding educational issues. Drawing upon data based on a review of the literature, the following has been found: a semantic comparison showed that the concepts were similar in their abilities to create visual images and function as communication media, but differed in origin, time orientation, reality reflection, activity orientation, and consensus creation. Empirical findings demonstrated the importance of question formulation, the researcher’s position, and the scope of the study. In conclusion, the paper proposes how the different concepts …

Amish Teacher Dialogues With Teacher Educators: Research, Culture, And Voices Of Critique, Henry Zehr, Glenda Moss, Joe Nichols Sep 2005

Amish Teacher Dialogues With Teacher Educators: Research, Culture, And Voices Of Critique, Henry Zehr, Glenda Moss, Joe Nichols

The Qualitative Report

This dialogical project is framed with in critical inquiry methods to bring an Amish teacher’s voice to the fore front. Henry, an Amish middle school teacher, and two university teacher educators in northeastern Indiana collaboratively critiqued educational literature written about the Amish culture from the past 15 years. Building on critical ethnography and narrative methods, the authors used dialogue as a medium for inquiry. The intersubjective, collaborative project democratized the university researchers’ research role and allowed an Amish voice to gain a place in the academic field of research.

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams Sep 2005

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams

The Qualitative Report

During the summer of 2001 I worked as a bartender in Wyoming, two miles east of Yellowstone National Park. This opportunity provided me with unique experiences of “the wilderness” and as a result, allowed me to become aware of intricacies of living with in a primarily simulated and mass mediated culture, i.e., the United States. Following tenets of phenomenology, this paper investigates the simulated- and mass mediated-ness of society with specific focus on experiences with two nature environments: simulated-nature places (e.g., shopping malls, zoos ) and televised-nature representations (e.g., Crocodile Hunter, Jaws) .

Manufacturing Companies And The Information Age In The U.S., Marcos Reynero Sep 2005

Manufacturing Companies And The Information Age In The U.S., Marcos Reynero

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the relationship between the amount of indirect labor and value added in manufacturing companies. Companies are moving manufacturing sites overseas in order to reduce cost. The cost of direct labor in countries like China is relatively lower in comparison to the cost of labor in the U.S. Edward Hill, professor at Cleveland State University's College of Urban Affairs, states that an hour of a manufacturing plant in the U.S. costs $150 versus $1 in China (Scherer, 2005). Companies are making strategic decisions based on reducing cost in order to improve profits. …

World Leader - At What Price? A Look At Lagging American Animal Protection Laws, Stephanie J. Engelsman

Pace Environmental Law Review

The United States might have been the first to the moon and to Mars, but it is far behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to protecting species here on Earth. The United States affords the most innocent of citizens, the nonhuman animals, almost no protection from societal exploitation. It has been more than 100 years since President Abraham Lincoln allegedly declared, "I am in favour of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of the whole human being." Yet in those 100 years, the United States has managed to pass a meager …

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann Sep 2005

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In a previous study that explored epistemological perspectives on solving problems with Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) we concluded that awareness of the special ways that the software utilizes symbols in algebraic manipulations and in implicit plotting should be encouraged (Zehavi, 2004). Such awareness is required for, and encouraged by treating geometry analytically with a symbolic-graphical system. In this paper we compare a traditional solution of a problem in analytic geometry with CAS-based solutions to the same problem. The discussion will focus on the role of reflective thinking, namely selection of techniques, monitoring of the solution process, insight, and conceptualization, play …

Molecular Subtyping And Antibiotic Resistance Analysis Of Salmonella Species, Aparna Tatavarthy Sep 2005

Molecular Subtyping And Antibiotic Resistance Analysis Of Salmonella Species, Aparna Tatavarthy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The genus Salmonella, comprised of 2400 serotypes, is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the US and has been used for the deliberate contamination of food. A rapid system for detection, isolation, typing and antibiotic susceptibility profiling is essential for diagnosis and source tracking in natural outbreaks or a bioterrorism event. Pure culture is essential for molecular typing and antibiotic resistance testing. The virulence and the resistance mechanisms of Salmonella are rapidly evolving and many are still unexplained. The first aim of the study was to rapidly detect and isolate Salmonella from intentionally contaminated food. The …

Mr Spectroscopy And Swi: Neuropsyehological Outcome After Pediatric Brain Injury, Talin Babikian Sep 2005

Mr Spectroscopy And Swi: Neuropsyehological Outcome After Pediatric Brain Injury, Talin Babikian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Truamatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most frequent pediatric neurological disorders and a significant contributor to childhood morbidity/mortality in the US. Although clinical indicators have been helpful in predicting long term outcomes, more effective prognostic tools are being sought. This study assessed the efficacies of acute single and multi-voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) and Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) when predicting long-term neurocognitive functioning in pediatric TBI patients. Twenty children/adolescents (mean age 13.3 years, 5.8 SD) treated at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital for a head injury were administered measures of intellectual and neuropsychological functioning 1-4 years post injury. Without …

Defining The 'Social' In 'Social Entrepreneurship': Altruism And Entrepreneurship, Wee Liang Tan, John N. Williams, Teck Meng Tan Sep 2005

Defining The 'Social' In 'Social Entrepreneurship': Altruism And Entrepreneurship, Wee Liang Tan, John N. Williams, Teck Meng Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

What is social entrepreneurship? In, particular, what’s so social about it? Understanding what social entrepreneurship is enables researchers to study the phenomenon and policy-makers to design measures to encourage it. However, such an understanding is lacking partly because there is no universally accepted definition of entrepreneurship as yet. In this paper, we suggest a definition of social entrepreneurship that intuitively accords with what is generally accepted as entrepreneurship and that captures the way in which entrepreneurship may be altruistic. Based on this we provide a taxonomy of social entrepreneurship and identify a number of real cases from Asia illustrating the …

Differences In Pah Tolerance Between Capitella Species: Underlying Biochemical Mechanisms, Lis Bach, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes Sep 2005

Differences In Pah Tolerance Between Capitella Species: Underlying Biochemical Mechanisms, Lis Bach, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The polychaete Capitella capitata consists of a species complex within which differences in tolerance to toxicants have been observed. For example, it has been shown that Capitella sp. S is more sensitive (e.g., in terms of survival, growth and reproduction) to PAH and other stressors than the more opportunistic Capitella sp. I, which is able to take up and biotransform the PAH fluoranthene (Flu). In the present study, an investigation was performed to examine whether differences in tolerance between Capitella species sp. I and sp. S are due to differences in biotransformation, measured as the amount of Flu-metabolites produced by …

Effects Of Fire On The Ectoparasites Of Small Mammals In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Habitats, Todd N. Nims Sep 2005

Effects Of Fire On The Ectoparasites Of Small Mammals In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Habitats, Todd N. Nims

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

I tested the hypothesis that fire significantly decreases prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites and therefore increases the condition of small mammals in longleaf pine habitats. I trapped two areas with paired burned and unburned sites in east central Georgia during 2002 2003. I collected 190 mammals from 9 species and recovered 32 ectoparasite species. I found little overlap in mammal species between paired sites. The overall chance for any mammal of having an ectoparasite was significantly greater on unburned sites (87.7% prevalence on burned vs. 100% unburned). There was no significant relationship between the number of individual ectoparasites on a …

Forms Of Expression For Designing Visual Languages For Animation, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay Sep 2005

Forms Of Expression For Designing Visual Languages For Animation, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present further steps in our research into visual languages for animation. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few, because animation systems are complex. Some systems try to make animation simple but put severe limits on users’ creative expression. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to express animation in a wide variety of ways. We are developing a taxonomy of forms of expression for animation that will help the designers of visual languages for animation to determine which expressive forms to support. Our end goal is to build animation sketching systems …

Investigating Hydrologic Alteration As A Mechanism Of Fish Assemblage Shifts In Urbanizing Streams, Allison H. Roy, Mary C. Freeman, Byron J. Freeman, Seth J. Wenger, William E. Ensign, Judith L. Meyer Sep 2005

Investigating Hydrologic Alteration As A Mechanism Of Fish Assemblage Shifts In Urbanizing Streams, Allison H. Roy, Mary C. Freeman, Byron J. Freeman, Seth J. Wenger, William E. Ensign, Judith L. Meyer

Faculty Articles

Stream biota in urban and suburban settings are thought to be impaired by altered hydrology; however, it is unknown what aspects of the hydrograph alter fish assemblage structure and which fishes are most vulnerable to hydrologic alterations in small streams. We quantified hydrologic variables and fish assemblages in 30 small streams and their subcatchments (area 8-20 km 2) in the Etowah River Catchment (Georgia, USA). We stratified streams and their subcatchments into 3 landcover categories based on imperviousness (20% of subcatchment), and then estimated the degree of hydrologic alteration based on synoptic measurements of baseflow yield. We derived hydrologic variables …

The Social Construction Of The Child Sex Offender Explored By Narrative, Helen Gavin Sep 2005

The Social Construction Of The Child Sex Offender Explored By Narrative, Helen Gavin

The Qualitative Report

The notion of "child sex offender" provokes aversion, but it may be that it is a social construction. We suggest that a Dominant narrative, in which child sex offenders are constructed as irredeemable, persists, despite the emergence of assumption challenging Alternative narratives. A story completion method was used to elicit themes of Dominant or Alternative narratives, theory-led thematic analysis was used to identify them. The use and analysis of narrative and free-form stories are well established in social research, but remain a novel concept in the study of offenders. The results support the persistence of the Dominant narrative with two …

An Automata-Based Automatic Verification Environment, Yi Meng Aug 2005

An Automata-Based Automatic Verification Environment, Yi Meng

Dissertations

With the continuing growth of computer systems including safety-critical computer control systems, the need for reliable tools to help construct, analyze, and verify such systems also continues to grow. The basic motivation of this work is to build such a formal verification environment for computer-based systems.

An example of such a tool is the Design Oriented Verification and Evaluation (DOVE) created by Australian Defense Science and Technology Organization. One of the advantages of DOVE is that it combines ease of use provided by a graphical user interface for describing specifications in the form of extended state machines with the rigor …
