Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young Sep 2005

Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Extreme environmental change during growth often results in an increase in developmental abnormalities in the morphology of an organism. The evolutionary significance of such stress-induced variation depends on the recurrence of a stressor and on the degree to which developmental errors can be accommodated by an organism's ontogeny without significant loss of function. We subjected populations of four species of soricid shrews to an extreme environment during growth and measured changes in the patterns of integration and accommodation of stress-induced developmental errors in a complex of mandibular traits. Adults that grew under an extreme environment had lower integration of morphological …

Paradox And The Consumption Of Authenticity Through Reality Television, Randall L. Rose, Stacy L. Wood Sep 2005

Paradox And The Consumption Of Authenticity Through Reality Television, Randall L. Rose, Stacy L. Wood

Faculty Publications

We position reality television within the broader category of consumer practices of authenticity seeking in a postmodern cultural context. The study draws on relevant perspectives from consumer research, literary criticism, sociology, and anthropology to argue that viewers of reality television encounter three elements of paradox in the process of constructing authenticity. The negotiation of each paradox exceeds the process of coping with or resolving their inherent contradictions to encompass the creation of new values. We argue that consumers blend fantastic elements of programming with indexical elements connected to their lived experiences to create a form of self-referential hyperauthenticity.

An Artificial Neural Network That Utilizes Hip Joint Actuations To Control Bifurcations And Chaos In A Passive Dynamic Bipedal Walking Model, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou Sep 2005

An Artificial Neural Network That Utilizes Hip Joint Actuations To Control Bifurcations And Chaos In A Passive Dynamic Bipedal Walking Model, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Chaos is a central feature of human locomotion and has been suggested to be a window to the control mechanisms of locomotion. In this investigation, we explored how the principles of chaos can be used to control locomotion with a passive dynamic bipedal walking model that has a chaotic gait pattern. Our control scheme was based on the scientific evidence that slight perturbations to the unstable manifolds of points in a chaotic system will promote the transition to new stable behaviors embedded in the rich chaotic attractor. Here we demonstrate that hip joint actuations during the swing phase can provide …

Flow Lookup And Biological Motion Perception, Nicholas Howe Sep 2005

Flow Lookup And Biological Motion Perception, Nicholas Howe

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Optical flow in monocular video can serve as a key for recognizing and tracking the three-dimensional pose of human subjects. In comparison with prior work using silhouettes as a key for pose lookup, flow data contains richer information and in experiments can successfully track more difficult sequences. Furthermore, flow recognition is powerful enough to model human abilities in perceiving biological motion from sparse input. The experiments described herein show that a tracker using flow moment lookup can reconstruct a common biological motion (walking) from images containing only point light sources attached to the joints of the moving subject.

On Academic Rigor As Simple Consistency And Interactive Standards, Scott Cawelti Sep 2005

On Academic Rigor As Simple Consistency And Interactive Standards, Scott Cawelti

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Truth be told, "Academic Rigor" doesn't have all that many supporters in academia. At best the concept fosters mixed feelings, especially in younger faculty; at worst, outright avoidance. Of course "rigor" as a concept gets lip service in catalogs and course descriptions, but as an applied value it's hard to come by, at least from what I've observed. Why is this?

The Let-7 Microrna Family Members Mir-48, Mir-84, And Mir-241 Function Together To Regulate Developmental Timing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Allison L. Abbott, Ezequiel Alvarez-Saavedra, Eric A. Miska, Nelson C. Lau, David P. Bartel, H. Robert Horvitz, Victor R. Ambros Sep 2005

The Let-7 Microrna Family Members Mir-48, Mir-84, And Mir-241 Function Together To Regulate Developmental Timing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Allison L. Abbott, Ezequiel Alvarez-Saavedra, Eric A. Miska, Nelson C. Lau, David P. Bartel, H. Robert Horvitz, Victor R. Ambros

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The microRNA let-7 is a critical regulator of developmental timing events at the larval-to-adult transition in C. elegans. Recently, microRNAs with sequence similarity to let-7 have been identified. We find that doubly mutant animals lacking the let-7 family microRNA genes mir-48 and mir-84 exhibit retarded molting behavior and retarded adult gene expression in the hypodermis. Triply mutant animals lacking mir-48, mir-84, and mir-241 exhibit repetition of L2-stage events in addition to retarded adult-stage events. mir-48, mir-84, and mir-241 function together to control the L2-to-L3 transition, likely by base pairing to complementary sites in the …

The Outcome Of Mta As A Root End Filling Material: A Long Term Evaluation, Christopher M. Sechrist Sep 2005

The Outcome Of Mta As A Root End Filling Material: A Long Term Evaluation, Christopher M. Sechrist

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Periradicular surgery is a viable option to save natural teeth when non-surgical treatment fails or when endodontic retreatment is not feasible or contraindicated. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that MTA is biocompatible, provides an excellent seal against penetrating bacteria, and promotes hard tissue healing. The purpose of this study was to provide long term (>3 years) clinical evidence for its use as a root-end filling material in endodontics. The clinical records of 294 patients who had MTA used during endodontic treatment from 1996 to 2001 were reviewed. From these, 75 patients whose root end cavities had been filled …

Treatment Outcome Of Root Perforations Repaired With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Stephen H. Paik

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Root perforations during root canal therapy have a significant negative impact on long-term prognosis of teeth. Proper treatment is critical in managing these accidental procedures. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is biocompatible, provides an excellent seal against penetrating bacteria, and promotes hard tissue healing. The purpose of this study was to determine the long term treatment outcome of root perforations repaired with MTA.

Ninety-nine records from the Graduate Endodontic Clinic at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry from 1996 to 2001 were reviewed. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were completed. Three independent examiners evaluated digitized …

Validation Of A Serotonin Depletion Checklist In Parkinson’S Disease, Kelly Diane Darby Holder Sep 2005

Validation Of A Serotonin Depletion Checklist In Parkinson’S Disease, Kelly Diane Darby Holder

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distinctive pathological marker of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the progressive death of neurons that produce dopamine; however, there are also major alterations in the production of quantities of other neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin that contribute to the signs, symptoms, neuropsychological manifestations of the diseases. PD patients can be divided into classes based on the manifestation of motor symptoms, type A, classified as tremor dominant, and type B PD, classified as akinetic. Type B PD patients, often manifest symptoms in which serotonin deficiency plays an important role, such as frontal cognitive impairments, which often includes a history of …
