A Comparison Of Diets And Water Agitation Methods For Larval Culture Of The Edible Sea Urchin, Tripneustes Ventricosus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), Ray Wolcott, Charles G. Messing

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Tripneustes ventricosus (Lamarck, 1816) has been harvested for human consumption in the Caribbean for centuries, where harvest rates occasionally exceed sustainability. Historically a backreef and grass-bed urchin, the species has recently been observed on the forereef where it appears to control macroalgal growth in the absence of Diadema antillarum (Philippi, 1845) (Woodley and Gayle, 1999). Large-scale culturing has the potential to produce T. ventricosus in sufficient numbers for remediation of degraded coral reefs, restocking of nearshore habitats, and development of an aquaculture industry for one or more Caribbean islands. We report the first successful culturing of T. ventricosus from fertilization …

Modeling Impacts Of Farming Management Alternatives On Co2, Ch4, And N2o Emissions: A Case Study For Water Management Of Rice Agriculture Of China, Changsheng Li, Steve Frolking, Xiangming Xiao, B Moore, Stephen Boles, Jianjun Qiu, Yao Huang, William A. Salas, Ronald Sass Sep 2005

Modeling Impacts Of Farming Management Alternatives On Co2, Ch4, And N2o Emissions: A Case Study For Water Management Of Rice Agriculture Of China, Changsheng Li, Steve Frolking, Xiangming Xiao, B Moore, Stephen Boles, Jianjun Qiu, Yao Huang, William A. Salas, Ronald Sass

Earth Sciences

Since the early 1980s, water management of rice paddies in China has changed substantially, with midseason drainage gradually replacing continuous flooding. This has provided an opportunity to estimate how a management alternative impacts greenhouse gas emissions at a large regional scale. We integrated a process-based model, DNDC, with a GIS database of paddy area, soil properties, and management factors. We simulated soil carbon sequestration (or net CO2 emission) and CH4 and N2O emissions from China's rice paddies (30 million ha), based on 1990 climate and management conditions, with two water management scenarios: continuous flooding and midseason …

A Shadow Government: Private Regulation, Free Speech, And Lessons From The Sinclair Blogstorm, Marvin Ammori Sep 2005

A Shadow Government: Private Regulation, Free Speech, And Lessons From The Sinclair Blogstorm, Marvin Ammori

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Because of the economics of online information, thousands who do not know each other can band together in hours, without previous organizational coordination or any persistent central coordination, to affect others and conform society to their idea of the social good. This changes the dynamic of political action and the ability of unaffiliated, lone individuals to respond to social acts where government and the market have not. Through ad hoc volunteerism, the Sinclair participants produced regulatory action against a private party with whom they were not transacting--because they believed government failed to do so. Although ad hoc volunteerism has received …

The Emergence Of The Social Brain Network: Evidence From Typical And Atypical Development, Mark H. Johnson, Richard Griffin, Gergely Csibra, Hanife Halit, Teresa Farroni, Michelle Dehaan, Leslie A. Tucker, Simon Baron-Cohen, John E. Richards

Faculty Publications

Several research groups have identified a network of regions of the adult cortex that are activated during social perception and cognition tasks. In this paper we focus on the development of components of this social brain network during early childhood and test aspects of a particular viewpoint on human functional brain development: “interactive specialization.” Specifically, we apply new data analysis techniques to a previously published data set of event-related potential ~ERP! studies involving 3-, 4-, and 12-month-old infants viewing faces of different orientation and direction of eye gaze. Using source separation and localization methods, several likely generators of scalp recorded …

Multiple Black-Necked Stilt Nesting Records In The Rainwater Basin, Joel G. Jorgensen, Paul Dunbar Sep 2005

Multiple Black-Necked Stilt Nesting Records In The Rainwater Basin, Joel G. Jorgensen, Paul Dunbar

Nebraska Bird Review

Black-necked Stilts (Himantopus mexicanus) have increased throughout much of the mid-continent in recent decades (Will 1999, Brinkley 2003, Brinkley and Baicich 2004). Prior to 1970 there were fewer than ten Nebraska records (Sharpe et al. 2001 ). Reports have increased since 1970 and are now annual. Breeding was first recorded in Nebraska in 1985 at Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge (Heisinger 1985). Breeding has been more or less regular in the western Sandhills since then (Sharpe et al. 2001) and additional breeding records have occurred in Scotts Bluff (Silcock 2002b ), Keith, and Hall Counties (Silcock 2000b ). …

In Memory Of John J. Dinan, 1954–2005, Wayne J. Mollhoff

Nebraska Bird Review

It was immediately obvious to anyone who knew John that his work with the birds and other wildlife of Nebraska was more than just a job—it was his life, and he lived it with a passion. Although not always a formal member of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union, John, as much as anyone, was "dedicated to the study, appreciation, and protection of birds" in Nebraska.

Those privileged enough to spend time afield with John quickly became aware of the presence of not just a professional biologist, but one still fired with that first innocent curiosity at discovering Nebraska's natural environment. That …

Status Of The Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica Cerulea) In Nebraska, W. Ross Silcock, John J. Dinan, Bill Huser, Joel G. Jorgensen

Nebraska Bird Review

The Cerulean Warbler is a species of high conservation concern because of apparent long-term declines throughout its breeding range (Hamel 2000a, Hamel et al. 2004, Sauer et al. 2005) and threats to and reduction of breeding and wintering habitat (Hamel et al. 2004, Rick et al. 2004). Nebraska has traditionally been at the western periphery of the species' breeding range, where it is restricted to mature woodlands in the Missouri River Valley (Sharpe et al. 2001, Mollhoff 2001). The Cerulean Warbler is a Tier I "at-risk" species under the Nebraska Natural Legacy Plan because it is a conservation priority (Schneider …

Summer Field Report, June–July 2005, W. Ross Silcock Sep 2005

Summer Field Report, June–July 2005, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

The highlights of this season revolve around the excellent wetland habitat that existed in the eastern Rainwater Basin as a result of two things: a period of good rains in May and playa wetlands that have undergone restoration. The latter involves removal of accumulated silt and woody vegetation. Silt removal allows for germination of plants of the native soil bank in the original impervious pan, as well as somewhat deeper and more stable water conditions. These conditions resulted in several important breeding records, such as Pied-billed Grebe, American Coot, Northern Shoveler, and especially Black-necked Stilt. The good water conditions no …

Matching Probabilities: The Behavioral Law And Economics Of Repeated Behavior, Ehud Guttel, Alon Harel Sep 2005

Matching Probabilities: The Behavioral Law And Economics Of Repeated Behavior, Ehud Guttel, Alon Harel

University of Chicago Law Review

Individuals often repeatedly face a choice of whether to obey a particular legal rule. Conventional legal scholarship assumes that whether such a choice is made repeatedly or is a one-time event has no effect on individuals' decisions. In either case, individuals are expected to maximize their payoffs. Experimental studies, however, suggest that individuals facing a recurring choice, in contrast to individuals making the choice only once, do not behave as maximizers. Instead, individuals facing the choice repeatedly apply the strategy of "probability matching." For example, individuals failed to maximize when presented with a die with four red faces and two …

Exploring Values In Catholic Schools, Joseph S. Fusco

Journal of Catholic Education

The past 30 years have been a busy time for Catholic school researchers. Once focused almost exclusively on historical research, Catholic school research in recent years has diversified and multiplied to include new descriptive and comparative studies. This article summarizes the findings of the most significant studies from 1966-2002 concerning values, the Catholic school effect, and apparent sector effects. Suggestions for future research are also proffered.

KIP Articles

Many karst features are characteristic of the Pivka basin. The Pivka intermittent lakes appear when high karst waters flood large and small karst depressions. The basins of the lakes were shaped by lateral and subsoil corrosion of flood waters. In the wider area around the intermittent lakes short dry caves prevail. Flora and fauna have adapted to the changeable water land regime. A favourable strategic position and climate have enabled human settlement of the region early in history

A Climate-Based Approach To The Restoration Of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt, Bob Panko Sep 2005

A Climate-Based Approach To The Restoration Of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt, Bob Panko

Faculty Publications

Recurrent fires are integral to the function of many ecosystems worldwide. The management of fire-frequented ecosystems requires the application of fire at the appropriate frequency and seasonally, but establishing the natural fire regime for an ecosystem can be problematic. Historical records of fires are often not available, and surrogates for past fires may not exist. We suggest that the relationship between climate and fire can provide an alternative means for inferring past fire regimes in some ecosystems. © 2005 Society for Ecological Restoration International.

The 27 extant species of sturgeons and paddlefishes (Order Acipenseriformes) represent a unique and relict lineage of fishes. Producers of coveted black caviar, sturgeons are one of the most valuable wildlife commodities on earth. The group is among the most endangered fishes with all species listed under Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix I (two species) or II (25 species), only two species considered Lower Risk by IUCN, four of the nine US taxa and one Caspian species protected under the Endangered Species Act, and local extinctions recorded for 19 of 27 species. Despite their well-publicized imperilled …
