From Navy Seals To The Siege: Getting To Know The Muslim Terrorist, Hollywood Style, Rubina Ramji

Journal of Religion & Film

The commercial film industry creates cultural products that often reflect societal norms. The popularity of these images is based on the fact that they reflect the "anxieties and longings” of their audience: as contemporary cultural "texts,” they are capable of expressing "the pressing concerns” of a moment in history. Film is often informed by the news, and reinforces the images portrayed through these media outlets: they are capable of conveying religious ideology and values in contemporary culture. Popular media such as cinema performs religious functions as public sites for the vocalization and discussion of meaning. Therefore films, as a social …

Automatic 3d Face Modeling Using 2d Active Appearance Models, Jianke Zhu, Steven Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Oct 2005

Automatic 3d Face Modeling Using 2d Active Appearance Models, Jianke Zhu, Steven Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although a lot of promising research findings have been studied on 3D face modeling in the past years, it is still a challenge to generate realistic 3D human face models and facial animations. This paper presents a novel approach to model 3D faces automatically from still images or video sequences without manual interactions. Our proposed scheme comprises three steps. First, we offline construct 3D shape models using Active Appearance Models (AAMs), which saves large computation costs for online modeling. Second, based on the computed 3D shape models, we propose an efficient algorithm to estimate the parameters of 3D pose and …

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Impacts On Herbaceous And Woody Vegetation In Southeastern Georgia, Jessica R. Brzyski Oct 2005

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Impacts On Herbaceous And Woody Vegetation In Southeastern Georgia, Jessica R. Brzyski

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

North American beavers are considered ecosystem engineers. Their activities can quickly and drastically alter habitat properties and perhaps permit highly aggressive colonizing plants, notably non-native species, to invade and potentially dominate. This study examined if beavers in southeastern Georgia have an effect on the terrestrial plant community. Sampling areas included beaver modified (N=9) and nearby but relatively non-impacted riparian habitat (N=9) in a matched pairs design. Vegetation surveys were performed in spring and summer. Species richness was calculated for herbs, vines, woody seedlings, and woody vegetation. Richness of herbaceous vegetation was higher at distances closer to shore while richness of …

Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong Oct 2005

Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article reviews work on 'cultural economy', particularly from within geography, and from other disciplines, where there are links to overtly geographical debates. We seek to clarify different interpretations of the term and to steer a course through this multivalency to suggest productive new research agendas. We review and critique work on cultural economy that represents a relatively straightforward economic geography, based on empirical observation while theoretically informed and driven by debates about Fordism and post-Fordism, agglomeration and cluster theory. Some of these ideas about cultural economy have proven attractive to policy-makers and we map a normative script of cultural …

Axial Stent Strut Angle Influences Wall Shear Stress After Stent Implantation: Analysis Using 3d Computational Fluid Dynamics Models Of Stent Foreshortening, John F. Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, David C. Warltier, Judy R. Kersten, Paul S. Pagel Oct 2005

Axial Stent Strut Angle Influences Wall Shear Stress After Stent Implantation: Analysis Using 3d Computational Fluid Dynamics Models Of Stent Foreshortening, John F. Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, David C. Warltier, Judy R. Kersten, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction

The success of vascular stents in the restoration of blood flow is limited by restenosis. Recent data generated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models suggest that the vascular geometry created by an implanted stent causes local alterations in wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal hyperplasia (NH). Foreshortening is a potential limitation of stent design that may affect stent performance and the rate of restenosis. The angle created between axially aligned stent struts and the principal direction of blood flow varies with the degree to which the stent foreshortens after implantation.

Methods

In the current investigation, we …

Extending Ethics, Robert L. Zimdahl Oct 2005

Extending Ethics, Robert L. Zimdahl

Journal of Extension

The primary objective of a series of workshops was to explore the ethical dimensions of Extension's role in achieving agricultural sustainability. A complementary objective was to increase participants' awareness of the ethical dimensions of agriculture. The workshops revealed that the ethics of agricultural practice is not a routine concern of Extension personnel. If the small sample from these workshops represents the view of the majority of Extension personnel, it is, at a minimum, interesting, and perhaps indicates a deficiency that should be addressed.

Presenting To Win--A Book Review, Ben C. West Oct 2005

Presenting To Win--A Book Review, Ben C. West

Journal of Extension

Presenting to Win: The Art of Telling Your Story, by Jerry Weissman, provides invaluable information on how to create compelling and effective presentations. In contrast to other books that hint at the use of PowerPoint as a visual aid, Weissman explains specifically how to create effective visual aids and discusses why some approaches work and others don't. Presenting to Win should be in the library of every Extension educator interested in enhancing the educational value and impact of his or her presentations.

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis Oct 2005

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Animation is a powerful medium that is accessible to few, because current animation tools are extremely complex. This complexity arises partially from current tools’ focus on precise, often unnecessary details and partially from the difficulty of finding a small but sufficiently powerful set of tool features. We are designing K-Sketch, an informal 2D animation tool that uses sketching and demonstration to radically reduce the time needed to create an animation. Our field studies investigating the needs of current anima-tion tool users and would-be users are helping us to mini-mize complexity by showing us how to prioritize the many possible tool …

Facilitating Interlocal Collaboration: Community And The Soft Skills Of Public Management, Ricardo S. Morse Sep 2005

Facilitating Interlocal Collaboration: Community And The Soft Skills Of Public Management, Ricardo S. Morse

Working Group on Interlocal Services Cooperation

This paper explores the issue of interlocal collaboration in non-metro areas and argues that the concept of community and related "soft skills" that go along with it are critical to understanding how increased collaboration can be encouraged. An action research process piloted in two Iowa counties provides the basis for this study and offers rich qualitative insight into some of the factors that influence non-metro interlocal collaboration.
