Transforming Public Spaces Through Performance, Anthony G. Valentine Jan 2005

Transforming Public Spaces Through Performance, Anthony G. Valentine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is study about how public spaces can be transformed through performance within them.

More specifically, this study involves two public venues: The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), Tampa, FL and The University of South Florida (USF), Tampa, FL in that within these public venues, not only do performances take place, but they transform the space they are performed in and the spaces in-between the public spaces into performance spaces.

A Future With Hope: The Social Construction Of Hope, Help, And Dialogic Reconciliation In A Community Children's Mental Health System Of Care, Christine S. Davis Jan 2005

A Future With Hope: The Social Construction Of Hope, Help, And Dialogic Reconciliation In A Community Children's Mental Health System Of Care, Christine S. Davis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the social construction of hope in a community mental health system of care. Groopman (2004) defines hope as the elevating feeling we experience when we see a path to a better future. A year-long ethnographic study of a children's mental health system of care team found that members of the mental health care team construct hope for themselves and for the family they're helping by cycling through the dialectical tensions of hegemony and equality, marginalization and normalization, relating and othering, empowerment and disempowerment, and control and emotionality. They reconcile these tensions in dialogic moments of empathy toward …

Simulating The Electric Field Mediated Motion Of Ions And Molecules In Diverse Matrices, Joseph Hickey Jan 2005

Simulating The Electric Field Mediated Motion Of Ions And Molecules In Diverse Matrices, Joseph Hickey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electroporation is a methodology for the introduction of drugs and genes into cells. This technique works by reducing the exclusionary nature of the cell membrane [125, 129, 186, 189]. Electroporation has successfully been used in electrochemotherapy and electrogenetherapy [57, 68, 86, 87, 110, 112, 131]. The two major components of electroporation are an induced transmembrane potential and the motion of the deliverable through a compromised cell membrane into the target cell [38, 55, 62, 114, 131]. These two components are both dependent on the electrophoretic motion of charged species in an applied electric field [45, 64, 75, 77, 177].

An Acoustic Fluid-Structure Simulation Of A Theraputic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide Apparatus, Graham Gavin, M.S. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness Jan 2005

An Acoustic Fluid-Structure Simulation Of A Theraputic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide Apparatus, Graham Gavin, M.S. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness

Conference Papers

The use of high-power low-frequency ultrasound transmitted down small diameter wire waveguides is an emerging technology that may have potential in the treatment of complicated atherosclerotic plaques in cardiovascular surgery. This form of energy delivery results in vibrating the distal-tip of the wire waveguide disrupting material by means of direct contact ablation and also cavitation, pressure waves and acoustic streaming in the surrounding fluid. This work describes a numerical acoustic fluid-structure model of the ultrasound wire waveguide and blood surrounding the distal tip. The structural analysis of the model predicts the natural frequencies of the waveguide and shows the extent …

A Time To Preserve: A Call For Formal Private-Party Rights In Perpetual Conservation Easements, Carol N. Brown Jan 2005

A Time To Preserve: A Call For Formal Private-Party Rights In Perpetual Conservation Easements, Carol N. Brown

Georgia Law Review

Increasingly, property owners are employing conservation easements to maintain open space or protect the environment through restrictions on development. Private-party standing to enforce conservation easements, however, has not been so widely embraced, in part because of the perceived inconsistency between private-party standing and private property rights. This Article argues that private-party standing to sue for enforcement of these easements reinforces both the easement grantor's private property rights and society's interest in natural resource preservation. The Article analyzes private-party standing under a reconstituted bundle of property rights theory and the public trust doctrine; examines the efficiency, social justice, and decentralization arguments …

Word-Formation As Creativity Within Productivity Constraints: Sociolinguistic Evidence, Don William Chapman, Pavol Stekauer, Slávka Tomaščíková, Štefan Franko Jan 2005

Word-Formation As Creativity Within Productivity Constraints: Sociolinguistic Evidence, Don William Chapman, Pavol Stekauer, Slávka Tomaščíková, Štefan Franko

Faculty Publications

Productivity has been one of the central topics in the field of word-formation in recent decades. Heretofore, productivity has been mainly, if not solely, discussed in formal terms, such as which affixes can be used with which stems, the productivity of rival affixes, etc. Such a formal approach leaves out the speakers’ needs for creating new words. Accounting for speakers’ word-formation needs requires a re-evaluation of the notion of creativity. In our approach to word-formation, this notion emphasizes the active role of language users, reflecting the fact that, in each act of naming, there is more or less significant space …

Community Building In The College Classroom: Understanding The Facilitator's Role In Encouraging Community Formation, Joanne Marie Peterson Jan 2005

Community Building In The College Classroom: Understanding The Facilitator's Role In Encouraging Community Formation, Joanne Marie Peterson

Honors Program Theses

For more than thirty years, educators have been pushing for the development of community within schools. In 1974, Gene Stanford and Albert E. Roarke wrote about the destructive potential of the then current attitudes about education. Teachers and students had specific roles to fill, and education was seen as competition between peers. Stanford and Roarke suggested that the best educational practice should rely on collaboration among students and teachers. Twenty-five years later, Mara Sapon-Shevin reiterated the view that classrooms must support cooperation and eliminate discomfort and fear from the classroom environment to maximize student learning. Today, teachers and administrators speak …
