The Dynamics Of Bay Anchovy In The Hudson River Estuary: Process-Oriented Studies And Long-Term Changes, Eric T. Schultz, Kamazima M. M. Lwiza, John R. Young, Kyle J. Hartman, R. C. Tipton

EEB Articles

We review three areas of recent research on Hudson River bay anchovy. One focus has been the along-estuary movement of early life stages. A cohort analysis of samples collected in a spatiotemporally extensive monitoring program has confirmed that early-stage anchovy migrate up-estuary, at an estimated rate of 0.6 km/d. Complementary fine-scale field sampling was designed to clarify behaviors that effect the migration. This work found that early-stage anchovy can show preferences for depth and can conduct periodic vertical migration. To determine whether these behaviors were sufficient to produce up-estuary migration, larval flux and velocity were estimated. These estimates were consistent …

Large-Scale, Manipulative Field Tests Involving Cultured And Wild Juveniles Of The Soft-Shell Clam, Brian F. Beal Dec 2005

Large-Scale, Manipulative Field Tests Involving Cultured And Wild Juveniles Of The Soft-Shell Clam, Brian F. Beal

PREP Reports & Publications

A series of field experiments to assess the efficacy of enhancing intertidal areas with cultured clam (Mya arenaria L.) seed (mean shell length [SL] = 7-10 mm) was conducted at Willows Flat, Hampton, New Hampshire from November 2004 to May 2005 and from June - October 2005. The first trial examined the interactive effects of size of planting area (4, 8, 12, 18 m2) and predator deterrent netting (none, 4.2 mm, and 6.4 mm aperture [flexible, plastic netting]) on clam growth and survival at one intertidal location. The second trial examined the effect of predator deterrent netting on clam growth …

Application Of Green Gdp Concept To The Calculating Method Of Economic Benefits Of The Yangshan Deep-Water Port, Ruizhi Wang Dec 2005

Application Of Green Gdp Concept To The Calculating Method Of Economic Benefits Of The Yangshan Deep-Water Port, Ruizhi Wang

World Maritime University Dissertations

With the construction of the first phrase of the Yangshan Deep-water Port, it has successfully brought Shanghai and its surrounding areas billions of dollars benefit income. It is quite obvious that every transportation project is aimed to get the most economic benefit income, but it is also can not denied that certainly negative influences to humans’ health, natural resources and ecologic environment is being brought when the transport project is being built and putting into operating. So it is obvious that any economic benefits making by the Yangshan Deep-water Port should not at the sacrifice of environment and ecology. But …

Container Development Strategy Of Tianjin Port, Weina Min Dec 2005

Container Development Strategy Of Tianjin Port, Weina Min

World Maritime University Dissertations

With the development of economic globalization, Port, which is regarded as the pivot of sea and land, takes increasingly important role in regional economy. In my country, 3 big port clusters shape in costal region. They are Bohai rim’s economy circle port cluster, Yangtze River delta economy circle port cluster and Pearl River delta economy circle port cluster. Of these three big port clusters, Shanghai port’s pivot status in Yangtze River delta is unshakeable by its own strength and its strong hinterland. In Pearl River delta, Xianggang port’s cock status can’t be suppressed by Shenzhen port and Guangzhou port in …

Combatant Status: It Is Time For Intermediate Levels Of Recognition For Partial Compliance, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2005

Combatant Status: It Is Time For Intermediate Levels Of Recognition For Partial Compliance, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

Under current international law, combatant status is an all-or-nothing proposition. Either a fighting force qualifies under all the criteria of article 4 of the GPW and receives all the privileges and immunities of combatant status, or a force does not qualify, and is provided no protection above that of any other civilian in the area, and may even be disqualified from the protections afforded to civilians. Given the reality of today's battlefields where the conflict is seldom between the armed forces of two nations, these requirements are counterproductive and provide a disincentive for fighters to distinguish themselves from the civilian …

Influence Of Fructose On The Mechanisms For Ethanol-Induced Hypertriglyceridaemia, I. Onyesom

Tanzania Journal of Science

Twelve adult albino rabbits with an average weight of 1.42 kg were purchased and divided equally into the normal saline, ethanol and ethanol+fructose-treated groups. The ethanol-treated group orally received 1.5 g (40%) ethanol/kg body weight as single daily dose, while the ethanol +fructose-treated animals also received the same ethanol dose, but were given in addition, 0.25 gfructose/kg body weight after about 10 min of the ethanol administration. The normal saline-treated rabbits were given the equivalent amount of normal saline in lieu of ethanol. The animals were exposed to these various treatments along with their usual feeding pattern for a regular …

A single stage anaerobic digester employing a sisal fibre waste fixed bed was studied for biogas production from sisal pulp waste. The fibre was colonized by microorganisms involved in biogas production. The sisal pulp waste to be digested was fed from the top and was sprinkled intermittently with recirculating leachate from the material. Organic loading rates of 0.1-10 kg volatile solids (VS) m-3d-1 could be applied and methane yields in the range of 0.13-0.48 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS added were obtained. The average methane content in the biogas produced from sisal pulp waste was 55%, and the biogas production rate …

Nilai Tukar Dan Trade Flows, Siti Astiyah, M. Setyawan Santoso Dec 2005

Nilai Tukar Dan Trade Flows, Siti Astiyah, M. Setyawan Santoso

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The paper is testing the Marshal-Lernercondition and the J-Curvephenomenon on the Indonesian trade. We apply the panel regression model and anlyze the impact of the real depreciation of Rupiah on the trade performance, both in the short run and in the long run.The study indicates the insignificant of the Rupiah real depreciation to boost the export performance in the short run. When the time horizon is long enough, the increase of the export caused by the depreciation, will offset the increase of the import, hence in the long run the real depreciation of Rupiah may significantly increase the trade performance, …

From Harm To Robustness: A Principled Approach To Vice Regulation, Jim Leitzel Dec 2005

From Harm To Robustness: A Principled Approach To Vice Regulation, Jim Leitzel

ExpressO

John Stuart Mill’s harm principle maintains that adult behavior cannot justifiably be subject to social coercion unless the behavior involves harm or a significant risk of harm to non-consenting others. The absence of harms to others, however, is one of the distinguishing features of many manifestations of “vices” such as the consumption of alcohol, nicotine, recreational drugs, prostitution, pornography, and gambling. It is with respect to vice policy, then, that the harm principle tends to be most constraining, and some current vice controls, such as prohibitions on drug possession and prostitution, violate Mill’s precept. In the vice arena, we seem …

Effect Of Quercetin On Altered Vascular Reactivity In Aortas Isolated From Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Machha Ajay, Francis I. Achike, Ali Mohd Mustafa, Mohd Rais Mustafa Dec 2005

Effect Of Quercetin On Altered Vascular Reactivity In Aortas Isolated From Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Machha Ajay, Francis I. Achike, Ali Mohd Mustafa, Mohd Rais Mustafa

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The present work examined ex vivo the acute effect of quercetin on diabetic rat aortic ring reactivity in response to endotheliumdependent (acetylcholine, ACh) and endothelium-independent (sodium nitroprusside, SNP) relaxants, and to the a1-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine (PE). Responses were compared to those of aortic rings from age- and sex-matched euglycemic rats. Compared to euglycemic rat aortic rings, diabetic rings showed less relaxation in response to ACh and SNP, and greater contraction in response to PE. Pretreatment with quercetin (10 mM, 20 min) increased ACh-induced relaxation and decreased PE-induced contraction in diabetic, but did not affect euglycemic rat aortic ring responses. Following …

Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Yuan Wang, Frank Yates, Olaia Naveiras, Patricia Ernst, George Q. Daley Dec 2005

Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Yuan Wang, Frank Yates, Olaia Naveiras, Patricia Ernst, George Q. Daley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Despite two decades of studies documenting the in vitro blood-forming potential of murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs), achieving stable long-term blood engraftment of ESC-derived hematopoietic stem cells in irradiated mice has proven difficult. We have exploited the Cdx-Hox pathway, a genetic program important for blood development, to enhance the differentiation of ESCs along the hematopoietic lineage. Using an embryonic stem cell line engineered with tetracycline-inducible Cdx4 , we demonstrate that ectopic Cdx4 expression promotes hematopoietic mesoderm specification, increases hematopoietic progenitor formation, and, together with HoxB4, enhances multilineage hematopoietic engraftment of lethally irradiated adult mice. Clonal analysis of retroviral integration sites …

The Problems With Blaming, Theodore Y. Blumoff Dec 2005

The Problems With Blaming, Theodore Y. Blumoff

ExpressO

This work examines the social practice of blaming, beginning with a prominent view of the moral philosophy of blaming, the semantics of character that support this (and related) views, and the social and cultural biases we bring to the process of attributing blame. Our penchant for blaming is too often manifest in a hyper-willingness to attribute wrongdoing solely to the character of the wrongdoer, often overlooking the salience of the varied situations in which the wrongdoer finds himself. I synthesize the wealth of data, mostly from social psychology, showing that blaming actualizes our own dispositions for over-emphasizing the actor’s wicked …

Distribution Of Foraging Shearwaters Relative To Inner Front Of Se Bering Sea, J. Jahncke, K. O. Coyle, Stephan I. Zeeman, N. B. Kachel, G. L. Hunt Jr. Dec 2005

Distribution Of Foraging Shearwaters Relative To Inner Front Of Se Bering Sea, J. Jahncke, K. O. Coyle, Stephan I. Zeeman, N. B. Kachel, G. L. Hunt Jr.

Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the hypothesis that short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris aggregate to forage at the inner front of the SE Bering Sea because of enhanced production there. We tested this hypothesis by comparing primary production, the distribution of euphausiids and the distribution of shearwaters relative to the front during late spring and late summer/early fall of 1997, 1998 and 1999. We found enhanced primary production at the front and offshore of the front during summer but not during spring. Primary production varied between seasons and years. Major differences were related to anomalous conditions in 1997 and 1998. The density of euphausiids …
