The Influence Of Hurricane Winds On Caribbean Dry Forest Structure And Nutrient Pools, Skip Van Bloem, Ariel E. Lugo, Rebecca Ostertag, Maria Rivera Costa, Ivelisse Ruiz Bernard, Sandra Molina Colón, Miguel Canals Mora

In 1998, we measured the effects of Hurricane Georges after it passed over long‐term research sites in Puerto Rican dry forest. Our primary objectives were to quantify hurricane effects on forest structure, to compare effects in a large tract of forest versus a series of nearby forest fragments, to evaluate short‐term response to hurricane disturbance in terms of mortality and sprouting, and to assess the ability of hurricanes to maintain forest structure. We sampled damage from 33 plots (1.3 ha) across a 3000‐ha tract of forest as well as in 19 fragments. For stems with 2.5‐cm minimum diameter, 1004 stems/ha …

Layer-By-Layer Nanoassembly Combined With Microfabrication Techniques For Microelectronics And Microelectromechanical Systems, Jingshi Shi Oct 2004

Layer-By-Layer Nanoassembly Combined With Microfabrication Techniques For Microelectronics And Microelectromechanical Systems, Jingshi Shi

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to investigate the combination of layer-by-layer self-assembly with microfabrication technology and its applications in microelectronics and MEMS.

One can assemble, on a standard silicon wafer, needed multilayers containing different nanoparticles and polymers and then apply various micromanufacturing techniques to form microdevices with nanostructured elements.

Alternate layer-by-layer self-assembly of linear polyions and colloidal silica at elevated temperatures have been firstly studied by QCM and SEM. LbL self-assembly and photolithography were combined to fabricate an indium resistor. The RTA method was employed in the fabrication. Hot-embossing technique as a reasonably fast and moderately expensive technique was …

Convergence Properties Of An Interval Probabilistic Approach To System Reliability Estimation, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2004

Convergence Properties Of An Interval Probabilistic Approach To System Reliability Estimation, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Based on a black box model of a complex system, and on intervals and probabilities describing the known information about the inputs, we want to estimate the system's reliability. Using the results of tests performed on the system's computer model, we can estimate the lower and upper bounds of the probability that the system is in a desirable state. In this paper, we prove that these estimates are correct in the sense that under reasonable assumptions, these estimates converge to the actual probability bounds.

Search For Doubly Charged Higgs Boson Pair Production In The Decay To Μ+Μ+Μ-Μ- In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2004

Search For Doubly Charged Higgs Boson Pair Production In The Decay To Μ+Μ+Μ-Μ- In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

A search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons in the process pp̅ → H++H-- → μ+μ+μ-μ- is performed with the D0 run II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The analysis is based on a sample of inclusive dimuon data collected at an energy of √s = 1.96 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 113 pb-1. In the absence of a signal, 95% confidence level mass limits of M(HL±±) > 118.4 GeV/c2 and M(HR±±) …

The Effect Of Crosswind And Turbulence In Mental Workload And Pilot Tracking Performance, Bruno E. Vivaldi Oct 2004

The Effect Of Crosswind And Turbulence In Mental Workload And Pilot Tracking Performance, Bruno E. Vivaldi

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of crosswind and turbulence on mental workload and pilot tracking performance. Based on previous research, it was believed that as the amount of crosswind and turbulence is increased, mental workload would increase and tracking performance would decrease. The objective was to estimate the impact that crosswind and turbulence, of varying degrees, had on performance and workload. Fifteen full time college student volunteers served as experimental participants in a simulated horizontal and vertical tracking task. Each participant flew twelve instrument approaches, experiencing a different crosswind and turbulence combination during each approach. …

Larvae Of Ceratocanthidae And Hybosoridae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea): Study Of Morphology, Phylogenetic Analysis And Evidence Of Paraphyly Of Hybosoridae, Vasily V. Grebennikov, Alberto Ballerio, Federico C. Ocampo, Clarke E. Scholtz Oct 2004

Larvae Of Ceratocanthidae And Hybosoridae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea): Study Of Morphology, Phylogenetic Analysis And Evidence Of Paraphyly Of Hybosoridae, Vasily V. Grebennikov, Alberto Ballerio, Federico C. Ocampo, Clarke E. Scholtz

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Larvae of the scarabaeoid genera Germarostes Paulian, Cyphopisthes Gestro, Paulianostes Ballerio, Ceratocanthus White, Pterorthochaetes Gestro, Madrasostes Paulian, Astaenomoechus Martínez & Pereira (Ceratocanthidae) and Hybosorus Macleay, Phaeochrous Castelnau, and Anaides Westwood (Hybosoridae) are described, keyed and illustrated with fifty-seven drawings. A phylogenetic analysis of these two families based on larval morphology is presented. Fifty-four larval morphological and three biological characters from twenty-seven taxa revealed nineteen equally parsimonious cladograms. The monophyly of (Ceratocanthidae + Hybosoridae) is supported by four unambiguous unique synapomorphies: dorsal medial endocarina on cranium extended anteriorly into frontal sclerite; presence of large membranous spot on apical antennomere; labium dorsally …

Exploring The Bermuda Triangle: Review Of Gender, Societal, Team And Individual Leadership Theories , Andrea J. Gage, Shelly Mumma, Susan Fritz Oct 2004

Exploring The Bermuda Triangle: Review Of Gender, Societal, Team And Individual Leadership Theories , Andrea J. Gage, Shelly Mumma, Susan Fritz

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The relationship between an individual’s comprehension of his or her role in society, the gender expectations of society, and how these thoughts and stereotypes influence an individual’s behavior in particular settings seem to be separate, yet interrelated. It is for this reason that an analysis of four main theories of gender and leadership must be reviewed for contrasts and comparisons. This paper reviews and analyzes the research literature on Social Role Theory, Implicit Theory, Attribution Theory, and Leader Emergence Theory. Further it draws conclusions and comparisons that will provide recommendations and implications for future research and practice.

Benchmarking Succession Planning & Executive Development In Higher Education, Jonathon Clunies Oct 2004

Benchmarking Succession Planning & Executive Development In Higher Education, Jonathon Clunies

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Higher education has historically been slow to adopt many corporate management processes. Succession planning is an especially difficult concept to apply in academia due to dramatic cultural differences between the boardroom and the campus. College and universities often have complex and sometimes bureaucratic procedures for hiring compared with many business corporations (Rosse & Levin, 2003). In a tightening economic and growing competitive climate, innovative colleges and universities are re-examining whether succession planning, coupled with executive development, could be adapted for more cost effective transitions of power and authority.
