Facultative Altitudinal Movements By Mountain White-Crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia Leucophrys Oriantha) In The Sierra Nevada, Thomas P. Hahn, Keith W. Sockman, Creagh W. Breuner, Martin L. Morton

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Mountain White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha) winter in Mexico and often arrive in the vicinity of their breeding grounds in the Sierra Nevada well before nesting is possible. Arrival at Tioga Pass, Califomia (elevation 3,030 m), usually occurs in early May, but residual winter snow and adverse weather can delay nesting for weeks. We used radiotelemetry to determine whether prebreeding Mountain White-crowned Sparrows engaged in weather-related altitudinal movements during the waiting period between the end of spring migration and onset of breeding during 1995-2001, with a range of residual winter snowpacks. Interannual variation in arrival date and onset …

The Signal Peptide Of The Junín Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein Is Myristoylated And Forms An Essential Subunit Of The Mature G1-G2 Complex, Joanne York, Victor Romanowski, Min Lu, Jack H. Nunberg Oct 2004

The Signal Peptide Of The Junín Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein Is Myristoylated And Forms An Essential Subunit Of The Mature G1-G2 Complex, Joanne York, Victor Romanowski, Min Lu, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Arenaviruses comprise a diverse family of rodent-borne viruses that are responsible for recurring and emerging outbreaks of viral hemorrhagic fevers worldwide. The Junin virus, a member of the New World arenaviruses, is endemic to the pampas grasslands of Argentina and is the etiologic agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever. In this study, we have analyzed the assembly and function of the Junin virus envelope glycoproteins. The mature envelope glycoprotein complex is proteolytically processed from the GP-C precursor polypeptide and consists of three noncovalently associated subunits, G1, G2, and a stable 58-amino-acid signal peptide. This tripartite organization is found both on virions …

Technology And Trust, Albert Borgmann Oct 2004

Technology And Trust, Albert Borgmann

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We think of trust as the animating spirit of a prosperous society. Trust makes promises workable, credit extendable and contracts reasonable. If you try to make trust dispensable through a system of fail-safe controls, you end up with a stultifyingly cumbersome apparatus, and the cost of handling things would exceed the price of producing them. If there is no trust at all in the person who is buying a 50p ballpoint pen, you have to frisk the person to make sure he or she is not planning a hold-up, ascertain their identity by checking their fingerprint or retina, get at …

The Next Era Of Sentencing Reform, Steven L. Chanenson Oct 2004

The Next Era Of Sentencing Reform, Steven L. Chanenson

Working Paper Series

This article charts a path for criminal sentencing in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent bombshell decision in Blakely v. Washington. Blakely has thrust sentencing systems across the country into turmoil. But Justice O’Connor was fundamentally wrong when, in her Blakely dissent, she exclaimed that “Over 20 years of sentencing reform are all but lost.” All is most assuredly not lost. Blakely, properly viewed, is an opportunity – albeit a disruptive one – to re-think and improve our sentencing systems.

The Blakely court interpreted the Sixth Amendment to require that any fact, other than the fact of prior conviction, …

Desire, Heavenly Bodies, And A Surrealist's Fascination With The Celestial Theatre, John G. Hatch Oct 2004

Desire, Heavenly Bodies, And A Surrealist's Fascination With The Celestial Theatre, John G. Hatch

Visual Arts Publications

In 1922, the German Surrealist artist Max Ernst produced a montage work that included a woman's bare buttocks protruding out of the rings of Saturn. It is, to say the least, an unusual combination of images, but one that addresses some very basic human impulses. Largely, It expresses Ernst's understanding that inscribed upon the night sky are some of our deepest held fears and fantasies. Ernst sought to generate contemporary rephrasings of our mythologizing of the cosmos in a complex and often enigmatic way, drawing on such varied sources as Freudian psychology, late nineteenth-century symbolism, alchemy, and Surrealism. Ultimately, Ernst …

St. Louis Exposition Of 1904 And The Accountants' Congress, Sept 26-28: Their History Revised For 2004, David A.R. Forrester

Accounting Historians Notebook

This two-day congress of accountants was held in September, 1904 during the St. Louis International Exposition. The importance of the congress for the federation of certified accountants across the United States is here confirmed. But the opportunities and intellectual challenges exposed at St. Louis, as at earlier European expositions, featured little for these pragmatic practitioners. More seriously for those claiming that an international accounting congress series began at St. Louis, an examination of its planning, agenda and participation reveals an Anglo-Saxon bias which was natural for that time. This bias was countered only by one Dutch accountant who arrived late …

Diversity And Homogeneity In American Culture: Teaching And Theory, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

In teaching, as in any kind of cultural production, you can look at content, or you can look at reception. Here I want to talk about both: the content of what to say about diversity and sharing in U.S. culture, and how that may be received.

Layer-By-Layer Self -Assembly For Enzyme And Dna Encapsulation And Delivery, Amish Patel Oct 2004

Layer-By-Layer Self -Assembly For Enzyme And Dna Encapsulation And Delivery, Amish Patel

Doctoral Dissertations

Thin wall microcapsules were formed via Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly of alternate adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte on microcores. After the core dissolution, empty polymeric shells with 20–25 nm thick walls were obtained. These microcapsules were loaded with Myoglobin, Hemoglobin and Glucose Oxidase by opening capsule pores at low pH and closing them at higher pH. The native structure of the enzyme was not affected due to different treatments. Biocompatible nanoshells were also prepared for encasing DNA. Using the same Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly approach nanoparticle were constructed containing DNA as one of the layers. The nanoparticles of different architecture were used to deliver …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross Oct 2004

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

Barramundi nutrition research has been undertaken since 1988. Since that time the requirements for most nutrients, energy demand, ingredient utilisation and the effects of nutrition on flesh quality aspects have all been examined to varying extents.

Optimal protein content of diets has been shown to vary with diet energy density and also the size of fish which are being fed. Most studies have suggested a protein requirement from 45% to 55%. For small fish a protein to energy ratio of 25 to 30 g/MJ is suggested. Limited work has been done on fish larger than 500 g. The 10 essential …
