Physical Significance Of Q Deformation And Many-Body Interactions In Nuclei, K. D. Sviratcheva, C. Bahri, A. I. Georgieva, J. P. Draayer Oct 2004

Physical Significance Of Q Deformation And Many-Body Interactions In Nuclei, K. D. Sviratcheva, C. Bahri, A. I. Georgieva, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

The pairing correlations in nuclie with mass 40 ≤ A ≤ 100 were studied. The study was carried out by using the concept of quantum deformation. It was observed that the q ≠ 1 was uniformly superior to those of the nondeformed limit and that the q parameter varies smoothly with nuclear characteristics. It was found that the q deformation plays a significant role in understanding higher-order effects in the many body interaction.

Spike And Slab Variable Selection: Frequentist And Bayesian Strategies (In Dna Microarray Data Analysis), J. Sunil Rao Oct 2004

Spike And Slab Variable Selection: Frequentist And Bayesian Strategies (In Dna Microarray Data Analysis), J. Sunil Rao

Probability & Statistics Seminar

Variable selection in the linear regression model takes many apparent faces from both frequentist and Bayesian standpoints. We introduce a variable selection method referred to as a rescaled spike and slab model. We study the importance of prior hierarchical specifications and draw connections to frequentist generalized ridge regression estimation. Specifically, we study the usefulness of continuous bimodal priors to model hypervariance parameters, and the effect scaling has on the posterior mean through its relationship to penalization. We demonstrate the importance of selective shrinkage for effective variable selection in terms of risk misclassification, and show this is achieved using the posterior …

An Introduction To The Tutte Polynomial, Haidong Wu

Combinatorics Seminar

In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to the Tutte polynomial. Tutte polynomial is a 2-variable polynomial which was first defined by Tutte in 1954 based on his earlier work in 1947. It has numerous applications.

Morphology Of The Prothorax And Procoxa In The New World Cryptocephalini (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cryptocephalinae), M. Lourdes Chamorro-Lacayo, Alexander S. Konstantinov Oct 2004

Morphology Of The Prothorax And Procoxa In The New World Cryptocephalini (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cryptocephalinae), M. Lourdes Chamorro-Lacayo, Alexander S. Konstantinov

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The comparative morphology of the prothorax and procoxae of New World Cryptocephalini was studied based on representatives of 11 of the 13 genera of the tribe. This study revealed a set of characters of obvious diagnostic and possible phylogenetic value supporting the currently accepted generic classification and two subtribes instead of the three currently recognized. Two general types of prothoracies were found, the first occurring in Cryptocephalina and Monachulina and the second in Pachybrachina. Previously undescribed for Polyphaga, a monocondylic joint between the coxa and trochantin, was found in all the genera studied. Possible movement of the trochanter, including the …

Does The Job Matter? Comparing Correlates Of Stress Among Treatment And Correctional Staff In Prisons, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin Oct 2004

Does The Job Matter? Comparing Correlates Of Stress Among Treatment And Correctional Staff In Prisons, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The wealth of literature on stress in the correctional workplace focused on correctional officers, frequently ignoring treatment personnel employed in these same institutions. This study advanced the literature on correctional workplace stress by: (1) testing for differences in workplace stress between correctional officers and treatment personnel, (2) examining personal and environmental factors to determine whether distinct precursors to stress existed for these two groups, and (3) utilizing multiple measures of stress. Self-report survey data from 3,794 employees in ten adult prisons in a southwestern state demonstrated that both groups of employees reported moderately high levels of job stress and stress-related …

Stevens, Ruth, Bronx African American History Project Oct 2004

Stevens, Ruth, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Ruth Stevens is a Caribbean immigrant to the Bronx who attained a high-level position at CBS before ultimately changing careers to become a teacher. Her story offers insight into both her experience as an immigrant and her experience within the world of corporate America.

Stevens was born in 1950 in the area that currently makes up the country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. During her childhood, she said that families had often been strict but that children still had the right to explore their surrounds. Stevens told the Bronx African-American History Project that her family ran a store on …

Almost Global Asymptotic Formation Stabilization Using Navigation Functions, Amit Kumar, Herbert G. Tanner Oct 2004

Almost Global Asymptotic Formation Stabilization Using Navigation Functions, Amit Kumar, Herbert G. Tanner

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a navigation function through which a group of mobile agents can be coordinated to achieve a particular formation, both in terms of shape and orientation, while avoiding collisions between themselves and with obstacles in the environment. Convergence is global and complete, subject to the constraints of the navigation function methodology. Algebraic graph theoretic properties associated with the interconnection graph are shown to affect the shape of the navigation function. The approach is centralized but the potential function is constructed in a way that facilitates complete decentralization. The strategy presented will also serve as a point of reference and …

Herbivore Experience With Plant Defense Compounds Influences Acquisition Of New Flavor Aversions, Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte Oct 2004

Herbivore Experience With Plant Defense Compounds Influences Acquisition Of New Flavor Aversions, Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Multiple experiments were conducted with a mammalian herbivore to determine how experience

with plant secondary metabolites (terpenes and tannins) influenced acquisition of new aversions to

diets containing these same plant metabolites. Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) were employed as

behavioral models for this study. Twenty-four subjects were assigned to three treatment groups that

received 20 days of experience with test diets: (A) terpene diet only; (B) tannin diet only; and (C)

terpene and tannin diets offered singly on alternate days. In experiment 1, all subjects were offered

both diets in a two-choice test to determine if experience affected diet preference. Both …

Temporal Origin Of Nitrogen In The Grain Of Irrigated Rice In The Dry Season: The Outcome Of Uptake, Cycling, Senescence And Competition Studied Using A 15N-Point Placement Technique, J. E. Sheehy, M. Mnzava, Kenneth G. Cassman, P. L. Mitchell, P. Pablico, R. P. Robles, H. P. Samonte, J. S. Lales, A. B. Ferrer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

It is often suggested that nitrogen absorbed in the vegetative stage of growth acts as a “reservoir” to supply the shortfall in demand during grain filling. The main objective of the work described in this paper was to investigate how effectively nitrogen absorbed at different stages of the growing season was retained and used for grain growth. The total nitrogen in the grain is the integral of the product of the total nitrogen absorbed at any instant and the eventual allocation of a fraction of that nitrogen to the grain. A point-placement technique was used to deliver small amounts of …
