Log and core data document gas saturations as high as 90% in a coarse‐grained turbidite sequence beneath the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) at south Hydrate Ridge, in the Cascadia accretionary complex. The geometry of this gas‐saturated bed is defined by a strong, negative‐polarity reflection in 3D seismic data. Because of the gas buoyancy, gas pressure equals or exceeds the overburden stress immediately beneath the GHSZ at the summit. We conclude that gas is focused into the coarse‐grained sequence from a large volume of the accretionary complex and is trapped until high gas pressure forces the gas to migrate through …

Beginning programmers are best served by integrateddevelopment environments that adapt to their growingsophistication as programmers. To this end, we propose fourdesign goals for learning curve management in educationalprogramming environments. We provide pedagogicaljustification for each goal, describe possible supporting featuresets, and discuss the extent to which these goals have beenachieved in some current environments, particularly JPie, ourinteractive environment for live construction of Java applications.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Blakely v. Washington has generated impassioned judicial and academic criticisms, perhaps because the “earthquake” ruling seems to announce a destructive rule in search of a sound principle. Read broadly, the jury trial rule articulated in Blakely might be thought to cast constitutional doubt on any and all judicial fact-finding at sentencing. Yet judicial fact-finding at sentencing has a long history, and such fact-finding has been an integral component of modern sentencing reforms and seems critical to the operation of guideline sentencing. This article is the first comprehensive treatment of neutrality agreements, which are themselves the most important development in Labor Law for decades. The labor movement's new approach to organizing displaces NLRB-supervised elections with negotiated agreements that provide (i) for employers to remain neutral during an upcoming union campaign, and (ii), in most instances, for employees to decide if they want to be represented through signing authorization cards rather than through a secret ballot election. Metallic solutions at room temperature used a laser point source target droplets. Using the target metallic solutions results in damage free use to surrounding optical components since no debris are formed. The metallic solutions can produce plasma emissions in the X-rays, XUV, and EUV (extreme ultra violet) spectral ranges of approximately 11.7 nm and 13 nm. The metallic solutions can include molecular liquids or mixtures of elemental and molecular liquids, such as metallic chloride solutions, metallic bromide solutions, metallic sulphate solutions, metallic nitrate solutions, and organo-metallic solutions. Homeschooling is a controversial educational option that has grown dramatically during the past two decades. Socialization concerns contribute strongly to this controversy. Research in this area is sparse, but it indicates that homeschooled students do well academically and socially. Many homeschooling studies suffer, however, from serious methodological issues. This investigation sought to discover whether differences in social competence existed between sample populations of homeschooled and conventionally-schooled students; research in the arena of competence and resilience served to guide the methodology. Where differences were found, specifics were elucidated and factors contributing to these differences were isolated.

This paper explores Sung Dynasty landscape paintings with focused attention on the works of Yen Wen-kuei. Comparison to Western art is apparent throughout the paper as an aide in using this information to create a unit of study suitable for high school art. The paper focuses around the context of the time period, materials used, style, presentation, viewer involvement, technique and thought process. The exemplar of Yen Wen-kuei is then dissected to give tangible evidence to the study.

The present invention provides a Populus 4-coumarate Co-enzyme A ligase gene promoter that directs expression in the xylem of plants. The promoter is used in methods designed to alter lignin content, lignin structure, cellulose content and combinations thereof. The methods comprise operably linking said promoter to heterologous nucleic acid molecules.

In this paper, experimental evaluation of the load balancing algorithm in real environments is presented. We emphasize the effects of delays on the exchange of information among nodes, and the constraints these effects impose on the design of a load balancing strategy. Two testbeds in two different real environments have been built; the first implementation was over a local area network whereas the second was over Planet-Lab. The results show the effect of network delays and variances in the task processing time on choosing adequate gain values for the load balancing algorithm.

WNK1 belongs to a unique family of Ser/Thr kinases that have been implicated in the control of blood pressure. Intronic deletions in the WNK1 gene result in its overexpression and lead to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a disease with salt-sensitive hypertension and hyperkalemia. How overexpression of WNK1 leads to Na⁺ retention and hypertension is not entirely clear. Similarly, there is no information on the hormonal regulation of expression of WNK kinases. There are two main WNK1 transcripts expressed in the kidney: the originally described “long” WNK1 and a shorter transcript that is specifically expressed in the kidney (KS-WNK1). The goal …

The Impact Of Different Types Of Expert Scientific Testimony On Mock Jurors’ Liability Verdicts, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Participants in two experiments acted as jurors for a personal-injury case containing different types of expert testimony. In both experiments, the defendant was more likely to obtain a verdict in his favor when his expert presented anecdotal case histories than when the expert presented experimental data. Participants’ liability judgments were correlated with their perceptions of the experts’ credibility (experiments 1 and 2) and were moderated somewhat by their need for cognition and preference for numerical information (experiment 2). The results are discussed in terms of reasoning heuristics such as the base-rate fallacy.

The case-crossover design has been widely used to study the association between short term air pollution exposure and the risk of an acute adverse health event. The design uses cases only, and, for each individual, compares exposure just prior to the event with exposure at other control, or “referent” times. By making within-subject comparisons, time invariant confounders are controlled by design. Even more important in the air pollution setting is that, by matching referents to the index time, time varying confounders can also be controlled by design. The focus of this study is to demonstrate that using response cost through applied behavior analysis is an effective treatment for reducing the stereotypic behaviors of individuals with mental retardation. McEntee and Saunders (1997) conducted a study in which response cost was used as an intervention within applied behavior analysis successfully to reduce the stereotypic behaviors in four male individuals with severe or profound mental retardation.
