Surface Structure Of Ultrathin Copolymer Films Of Ferroelectric Vinylidene Fluoride (70%) With Trifluoroethylene (30%) On Graphite, Lei Cai, Hongwei Qu, Chenxi Lu, Stephen Ducharme, Peter A. Dowben, Jiandi Zhang Oct 2004

Surface Structure Of Ultrathin Copolymer Films Of Ferroelectric Vinylidene Fluoride (70%) With Trifluoroethylene (30%) On Graphite, Lei Cai, Hongwei Qu, Chenxi Lu, Stephen Ducharme, Peter A. Dowben, Jiandi Zhang

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The structure and local structural distortions, through the polarization manipulation, of crystalline films of ferroelectric vinylidene fluoride (70%) with trifluoroethylene (30%) [P(VDF-TrFE)] copolymer on graphite were studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A quasispiral twist in C[Single Bond]C bonds with rotations about the polymer chain axis was observed by high-resolution STM, indicating a surface relaxation of the strained copolymer films. Such a relaxation behavior appears to be linked to the observed local dipole rotations accompanied by the reversal of the local polarization with biasing the STM tip. A structure model is proposed based upon the observations

The Provider System For Children's Mental Health: Workforce Capacity And Effective Treatment, Jane Koppelman Oct 2004

The Provider System For Children's Mental Health: Workforce Capacity And Effective Treatment, Jane Koppelman

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief examines two issues that are key to meeting children’s unmet needs for mental health care: ensuring that the provider supply is adequate and that the care delivered is effective. It describes the shortage of qualified providers to address children’s mental disorders, as well its possible causes; it describes how managed care, to a certain extent, drives practice patterns; and it discusses the gray areas in deciding which providers are most qualified to deliver what care. In addition, this paper introduces what is known about evidence-based care in children’s mental health, the extent to which it is being …

Event-Related Potential Evidence For Multiple Causes Of The Revelation Effect, P. Andrew Leynes, Joshua Landau, Jessica Walker, Richard J. Addante Oct 2004

Event-Related Potential Evidence For Multiple Causes Of The Revelation Effect, P. Andrew Leynes, Joshua Landau, Jessica Walker, Richard J. Addante

Psychology Faculty Publications

Asking people to discover the identity of a recognition test probe immediately before making a recognition judgment increases the probability of an old judgment. To inform theories of this “revelation effect,” event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded for revealed and intact test items across two experiments. In Experiment 1, we used a revelation effect paradigm where half of the test probes were presented as anagrams (i.e., a related task) and the other items were presented intact. The pattern of ERP results from this experiment suggested that revealing an item decreases initial familiarity levels and caused the revealed items to elicit similar …

Judicial Globalization In The Service Of Self-Government, Martin S. Flaherty Oct 2004

Judicial Globalization In The Service Of Self-Government, Martin S. Flaherty

Princeton Law and Public Affairs Research Paper Series

This working paper considers potential justifications for the democratic legitimacy of what Anne-Marie Slaughter has termed, “judicial globalization” – the reliance by U.S. judges on international and foreign legal materials in the interpretation of domestic law. Toward this end the paper offers two and a half tentative answers, one distinctive to the U.S., the other(s) with general applicability. The distinctively American response, however conservative in theory, suggests that the original understanding of the Constitution supports a strong presumption that the Constitution, and Federal law generally, be interpreted in a way that is consistent with international law, particularly with regard to …

Theory And Practice Of Competition Advocacy At The Ftc, James C. Cooper, Paul A. Pautler, Todd J. Zywicki

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

This article was prepared as part of a recent symposium celebrating the Ninetieth Anniversary of the founding of the Federal Trade Commission. In addition, fall 2004 marks the Thirtieth Anniversary of a pivotal moment in the establishment of the modern advocacy program at the FTC, Chairman Lewis Engman’s speech on the economic burden that inefficient transportation regulation policies were imposing on the American economy. Although the FTC has been involved in advocacy activities since its founding, Engman’s speech symbolized a new aggressiveness on the part of the FTC in using its expertise to work with other governmental actors at all …

Phase Imaging Using Multi-Wavelength Digital Holography, Myung K. Kim, James Gass, Aaron Dakoff Oct 2004

Phase Imaging Using Multi-Wavelength Digital Holography, Myung K. Kim, James Gass, Aaron Dakoff

USF Patents

The present invention is a phase-imaging technique by digital holography that eliminates the problem of 2Ï€-ambiguity. The technique is based on a combination of two or more digital holograms generated using multiple wavelengths. For a two-wavelength experiment, the phase maps of two digital holograms of different wavelengths are subtracted which yields another phase map whose effective wavelength is inversely proportional to the difference of wavelengths. Using two holograms made with a 633 nm HeNe laser and a 532 nm doubled YAG laser an image was obtained that is a 3D reconstruction of a reflective surface with axial resolution of Ëœ10 …

Ultra-Fast Formation Of Stable Nanoparticle Film Assemblies, Dan Sheibley, Renee Szymanik, Michael C. Leopold Oct 2004

Ultra-Fast Formation Of Stable Nanoparticle Film Assemblies, Dan Sheibley, Renee Szymanik, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Novel assembled films of monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) can be grown on gold and glass substrates with a 20-fold higher efficiency than established procedures. Thick MPC films grown using this new method, which can easily be scaled up or automated, are extremely stable and have properties identical to traditionally formed nanoparticle films, including unique quantized double layer charging effects. This new procedure for growing nanoparticle films shares the versatility of the traditional method but exhibits accelerated growth attributed to highly efficient sorption and mobility of metal ion linkers within swelled films and improved mass transfer of nanoparticles to assembly sites. Concentration …
