Valley Splitting In Low-Density Quantum-Confined Heterostructures Studied Using Tight-Binding Models, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck, Mark Friesen, S. N. Coppersmith, Paul Von Allmen, Seungwon Lee, Fabiano Oyafuso

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A detailed study of reduced-basis tight-binding models of electrons in semiconducting quantum wells is presented. The focus is on systems with degenerate valleys, such as silicon in silicon germanium heterostructures, in the low-density limit, relevant to proposed quantum computing architectures. Analytic results for the bound states of systems with hard-wall boundaries are presented and used to characterize the valley splitting in silicon quantum wells. The analytic solution in a no-spin-orbit model agrees well with larger tight-binding calculations that do include spin-orbit coupling. Numerical investigations of the valley splitting for finite band offsets are presented that indicate that the hard-wall results …

The Latent Membrane Protein 1 Of Epstein-Barr Virus Establishes An Antiviral State Via Induction Of Interferon-Stimulated Genes, Jun Zhang, Subash C. Das, Catherine Kotalik, Asit K. Pattnaik, Luwen Zhang Oct 2004

The Latent Membrane Protein 1 Of Epstein-Barr Virus Establishes An Antiviral State Via Induction Of Interferon-Stimulated Genes, Jun Zhang, Subash C. Das, Catherine Kotalik, Asit K. Pattnaik, Luwen Zhang

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with several human cancers. Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) is one of the key viral proteins required for transformation of primary B cells in vitro and establishment of EBV latency. In this report, we show that LMP-1 is able to induce the expression of several interferon (IFN)-stimulated genes (ISGs) with antiviral properties such as 2’-5’ oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS), stimulated trans-acting factor of 50 kDa (STAF- 50), and ISG-15. LMP-1 inhibits vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) replication at low multiplicity of infection (0.1 pfu/cell). The antiviral effect of LMP-1 is associated with the ability of LMP-1 …

Evidence That D1 Processing Is Required For Manganese Binding And Extrinsic Protein Assembly Into Photosystem Ii, Johnna L. Roose, Himadri B. Pakrasi Oct 2004

Evidence That D1 Processing Is Required For Manganese Binding And Extrinsic Protein Assembly Into Photosystem Ii, Johnna L. Roose, Himadri B. Pakrasi

Faculty Publications

Photosystem II (PSII) is a large membrane protein complex that catalyzes oxidation of water to molecular oxygen. During its normal function, PSII is damaged and frequently turned over. The maturation of the D1 protein, a key component in PSII, is a critical step in PSII biogenesis. The precursor form of D1 (pD1) contains a C-terminal extension, which is removed by the protease CtpA to yield PSII complexes with oxygen evolution activity. To determine the temporal position of D1 processing in the PSII assembly pathway, PSII complexes containing only pD1 were isolated from a CtpA-deficient strain of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis 6803. …

The Heme Oxygenase(S)-Phytochrome System Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Rosalina Wegele, Ronja Tasler, Yuhong Zeng, Mario Rivera, Nicole Frankeinberg-Dinkel Oct 2004

The Heme Oxygenase(S)-Phytochrome System Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Rosalina Wegele, Ronja Tasler, Yuhong Zeng, Mario Rivera, Nicole Frankeinberg-Dinkel

Faculty Publications

For many pathogenic bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa heme is an essential source of iron. After uptake, the heme molecule is degraded by heme oxygenases to yield iron, carbon monoxide, and biliverdin. The heme oxygenase PigA is only induced under iron-limiting conditions and produces the unusual biliverdin isomers IXβ and IXδ. The gene for a second putative heme oxygenase in P. aeruginosa, bphO, occurs in an operon with the gene bphP encoding a bacterial phytochrome. Here we provide biochemical evidence that bphO encodes for a second heme oxygenase in P. aeruginosa. HPLC, 1H, and 13C NMR studies indicate that BphO is …

Supersymmetry In Quantum Mechanics: An Extended View, A. R.P. Rau Oct 2004

Supersymmetry In Quantum Mechanics: An Extended View, A. R.P. Rau

Faculty Publications

The concept of supersymmetry in a quantum-mechanical system is extended, permitting the recognition of more supersymmetric systems, including very familiar ones such as the free particle. Its spectrum is shown to be supersymmetric upon taking into account physical reasonableness of the wavefunctions involved. Spacetime symmetries are used for the construction of the supercharges without explicit invocation of fermionic or Grassmann variables. Most notably, while the free particle in one dimension has generally been regarded as having a doubly degenerate continuum throughout, the construction clarifies that there is a single zero-energy state at the base of the spectrum.

Probe-Level Correction In Analysis Of Affymetrix Data, Fenghai Duan Oct 2004

Probe-Level Correction In Analysis Of Affymetrix Data, Fenghai Duan

Probability & Statistics Seminar

For some of Affymetrix GeneChips, it is necessary to correct the texture effect on the images before doing the common background subtraction and normalization. In this study, we explore a way to assess and correct the texture effect. Without this correction, we found that the texture effect affected the performance of the conventional approach in identification of significantly expressed genes. Furthermore, we found that treating probes as "subjects" in the same probe set and using repeated measures analysis can help remove the local artifacts from the residual images, which are commonly associated with conventional approaches. Finally, we also tried to …

Problems With The Dartmouth Wireless Snmp Data Collection, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz Oct 2004

Problems With The Dartmouth Wireless Snmp Data Collection, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

The original Dartmouth wireless network study used SNMP to query the college's Cisco 802.11b access points. The perl scripts that performed the SNMP queries suffered from some problems, in that they queried inappropriate SNMP values, or misunderstood the meaning of other values. This data was also used in a subsequent analysis. The same scripts were used to collect data for a subsequent study of another wireless network. This document outlines these problems and indicates which of the data collected by the original scripts may be invalid.
