Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle Jan 2004

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …

Comparison Of Energy-Restricted Very Low-Carbohydrate And Low-Fat Diets On Weight Loss And Body Composition In Overweight Men And Women, Jeff Volek, Matthew Sharman, Ana Gomez, D Judelson, M Rubin, Greig Watson, B Sokmen, R Silvestre, Duncan French, William Kraemer Jan 2004

Comparison Of Energy-Restricted Very Low-Carbohydrate And Low-Fat Diets On Weight Loss And Body Composition In Overweight Men And Women, Jeff Volek, Matthew Sharman, Ana Gomez, D Judelson, M Rubin, Greig Watson, B Sokmen, R Silvestre, Duncan French, William Kraemer

Research outputs pre 2011

Objective: To compare the effects of isocaloric, energy-restricted very low-carbohydrate ketogenic (VLCK) and low-fat (LF) diets on weight loss, body composition, trunk fat mass, and resting energy expenditure (REE) in overweight/obese men and women. Design: Randomized, balanced, two diet period clinical intervention study. Subjects were prescribed two energy-restricted (-500 kcal/day) diets: a VLCK diet with a goal to decrease carbohydrate levels below 10% of energy and induce ketosis and a LF diet with a goal similar to national recommendations (%carbohydrate:fat:protein = ~60:25:15%). Subjects: 15 healthy, overweight/obese men (mean ± s.e.m.: age 33.2 ± 2.9 y, body mass 109.1 ± 4.6 …

An Intelligent Navigation System For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Dedy Loebis Jan 2004

An Intelligent Navigation System For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Dedy Loebis

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The work in this thesis concerns with the development of a novel multisensor data fusion (MSDF) technique, which combines synergistically Kalman filtering, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm approaches, aimed to enhance the accuracy of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation system, formed by an integration of global positioning system and inertial navigation system (GPS/INS). The Kalman filter has been a popular method for integrating the data produced by the GPS and INS to provide optimal estimates of AUVs position and attitude. In this thesis, a sequential use of a linear Kalman filter and extended Kalman filter is proposed. The former …

Overcoming The Effect Of Jpeg Compression On Steganography, Imad M. Al- Hussaini, Hussain J. Abass, M. Al-Towayjri Jan 2004

Overcoming The Effect Of Jpeg Compression On Steganography, Imad M. Al- Hussaini, Hussain J. Abass, M. Al-Towayjri

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

This paper presents an intelligent modeling technique that combines the merits of Fuzzy Logic (FL), Neural Networks (NNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs), where the GA is used to train a Fuzzy Neural Identifier (FNI) to identify ill-defined dynamical systems using the series-parallel identification model. The parameters of the FNI (including the input and output scaling factors, the centers and widths of the membership functions (MFs) for the input variables, and the quantization levels of the output variable, that are subjected to constraints on their values by the expert) are modified by the real-coding GA with hybrid selection method and elitism …

Robert Gordon, Class Of 1940, University Libraries, Lane Library

Finding Aids

Mrs. Gordon (Rosalyn Weiser, Class of 1943) lent a scrapbook highlighting Mr. Gordon's athletic career, giving the archivist permission to make photocopies of its contents before returning it to her. The scrapbook contained a letter from Dean J. Thomas Askew inviting Gordon to take exams for a tuition scholarship because of his excellent high school grades. The archivist also made copies of newspaper clippings (The Savannah Morning News, The Inkwell, 1938 and 1939) related to Gordon's years at Armstrong on the basketball and football teams. The collection contains photocopies of his Athletic Hall of Fame plaque dated 1998, as well …

A Large Late Pleistocene Outburst Flood From Pluvial Lakes Alvord And Coyote Into The Owyhee River, Oregon, Deron Torrey Carter Jan 2004

A Large Late Pleistocene Outburst Flood From Pluvial Lakes Alvord And Coyote Into The Owyhee River, Oregon, Deron Torrey Carter

All Master's Theses

A large late-Pleistocene flood traveled into the Owyhee River as a result of a rise and subsequent outburst from pluvial Lake Alvord in southeastern Oregon. Lake Alvord breached Big Sand Gap after reaching an elevation of 1292 m, releasing 11.3 km3 into the adjacent Coyote Basin before stabilizing at an elevation of about 1280 m. Overflow then spilled out of the Coyote Basin through two outlets at 1278 m and into the Crooked Creek drainage of the Owyhee River. The flood created a series of deeply incised canyons, scabland topography and deposited numerous boulder bars containing imbricated clasts up to …

A Comparison Of Reading Development By Learners Of Japanese In Intensive Domestic Immersion And Study Abroad Contexts, Dan Dewey Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Reading Development By Learners Of Japanese In Intensive Domestic Immersion And Study Abroad Contexts, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

To investigate the role of context in reading development, a comparison of reading comprehension and processes was conducted between learners of Japanese as a second language in study abroad (SA; n = 15) and intensive domestic (in the United States) immersion (IM; n = 15) contexts. A significant difference was found between contexts in pretest to posttest gains on only one measure of reading comprehension, a self-assessment. Differences on the two other measures of comprehension—free-recall and vocabulary knowledge—were not significant. The self-assessment measure indicated that SA students felt more confident reading the second language than their IM counterparts. In terms …

Teacher And Administrator Perceptions Of Teacher Performance Evaluation Systems In Two Georgia Public School Districts, Jane Ford-Brocato Jan 2004

Teacher And Administrator Perceptions Of Teacher Performance Evaluation Systems In Two Georgia Public School Districts, Jane Ford-Brocato

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Teacher evaluation has the potential for improving teachers' skills and contributing to school improvement. This study was designed to measure and compare the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding two performance evaluation systems that were in use in two comparable Georgia school districts during the 2001- 2002 school year to determine if teachers and administrators perceived any significant difference between the two systems of teacher evaluation and their impact on improving instruction and promoting professional growth. One of the school district's utilized a locally adopted alternative teacher evaluation system, while the other school district maintained its use of the Georgia …
