Basic Communication Course Annual
The ways that an individual professor, a department, or a campus talks about the basic communication course can be arrayed along a broad spectrum of attitudes. At one end of a continuum are those who look at the course with a blend of intellectual contempt and embarrassment (Burgoon, 1989) or who believe that an assignment to teach such a course counts as penance or banishment. For many or most of our colleagues the characterizations fall in a more positive central zone, construing the course as a rich source of student enrollment or a fertile recruiting ground for majors.

Industry and researchers have two different visions for the future of Web services. Industry wants to capitalize on Web service technology to automate business processes via centralized workflow enactment. Researchers are interested in the dynamic composition of Web services. We show how these two visions are points in a continuum and discuss a possible path for bridging the gap between them.

The purpose of this research project is to provide information that will aid in increasing the awareness of organic products that Healthy Island carries and to understand the customer needs when dealing with organic products, such a noni juice. This information will assist Healthy Island in the development of an effective marketing strategy. The questions that I hope to answer through this project are the following: 1. Is there a mark t for organic products geared toward younger men and women? 2. What is the current knowledge of organic products, specifically noni juice 3. What are the most effective ways …
Distribution Of Legumes Along Gradients Of Slope And Soil Electrical Conductivity In Pastures, John A. Guretzky, Kenneth J. Moore, C. Lee Burras, E. Charles Brummer
Distribution Of Legumes Along Gradients Of Slope And Soil Electrical Conductivity In Pastures, John A. Guretzky, Kenneth J. Moore, C. Lee Burras, E. Charles Brummer
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Legumes establish and persist on backslope landscape positions but fail on summits and toeslopes in southeastern Iowa pastures, suggesting that these pastures be managed site specifically. Visual delineation of landscape positions, however, can be difficult, and char- acterization of spatial variability through soil sampling is expensive. Creation of digital elevation models (DEM) and apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) mapping are inexpensive alternatives to de- scribing field conditions. Our objective was to examine the relationships of DEM-derived slope, soil ECa, and legume distribution in pastures. We examined these relationships across four 1.4-ha pastures. Each pasture was divided into …
Using Multi-Spectral Imagery To Evaluate Corn Grown Under Nitrogen And Drought Stressed Conditions, Shannon L. Osborne, James S. Schepers, Mike R. Schlemmer
Using Multi-Spectral Imagery To Evaluate Corn Grown Under Nitrogen And Drought Stressed Conditions, Shannon L. Osborne, James S. Schepers, Mike R. Schlemmer
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The in-season estimation of crop stresses which have the potential of adversely affecting crop yield and/or quality could allow producers to make in-season management decisions to correct for the particular stress. A field study was conducted to evaluate the use of multispectral imagery for estimating corn (Zea mays L.) grain yield, in-season biomass and nitrogen (N) concentration under varying N and drought stresses. The experiment was a split-plot design with three replications using a factorial arrangement of treatments. Three irrigation (whole-plot) treatments included dry land, irrigation based on 0.5, and full evapotranspiration (ET). Sub-plot treatments included five N …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
In sorghum, ingress of Cochliobolus heterostrophus stimulates the synthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins that act as phytoalexins. Apigeninidin and luteolinidin are two major phytoalexins induced in the first 24 h after infection. In an attempt to understand genetic regulation of the biosynthesis of sorghum phytoalexins, we isolated a differentially expressed partial cDNA. Characterization and comparison showed that this cDNA sequence corresponds to a putative flavonoid 3’-hydroxylase. Full length sequence characterization allowed us to establish that the sorghum putative f3’h cDNA encodes a peptide of 517 amino acids that has domains conserved among cytochrome P450 proteins functioning in …
Mobility, Sedentism, And Intensification: Organizational Responses To Environmental And Social Change Among The San Of Southern Africa, Robert K. Hitchcock
Mobility, Sedentism, And Intensification: Organizational Responses To Environmental And Social Change Among The San Of Southern Africa, Robert K. Hitchcock
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
HUNTER-GATHERER ADAPTATIONS included mobility strategies that were geared toward mapping people on to both resources and other people. There are factors that condition the ways in which people position themselves on the landscape and move over it. Mobility strategies are organizational responses to the structural properties of the natural and social environments (Binford 1980, 2001). The logistical component of a settlement system, in which task-specific groups range out from residential locations for purposes of obtaining food, raw materials, or information, is related to the organization of production of a society as well as to the distribution of critical resources in …

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In January of 2001 the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Geography became the Department of Anthropology and Geography. This merger was not requested by members of either unit: it was imposed administratively. Under ideal circumstance, such mergers evolve organically through a history of collaborations from the bottom up. Nevertheless, faculty of each unit had collaborated in a variety of contexts so there was some basis for integration. As one may imagine, one of the first things we set out to accomplish as a newly formed unit was the establishment of a common set of by-laws. After about six …

An Evaluation Of Economic Efficiencies Of Two Beef Systems From Calving To Harvest, Rosemary V. Anderson, Richard J. Rasby, Dick Clark, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Casey Macken
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Spring-calving, crossbred cows were used in a three-year experiment to determine the economic efficiencies of two different beef systems. Cows were either wintered on pasture (Control System) or on cornstalks (Treatment System). Control System steers were transported to a feedlot, fed a finishing diet and slaughtered. Treatment System steers were wintered on cornstalks, grazed pasture, fed a finishing diet and slaughtered. The Treatment System had lower weaning and slaughter breakeven, lower cost per weaned calf and greater profit potential when finished steers were sold on a live basis. Profitability was similar when finished steers were sold on a grid basis.
Carcass Traits And Palatability Attributes Of Herdmates Finished As Calves Or Yearling Steers, Perry S. Brewer, Chris R. Calkins, Richard J. Rasby, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rosemary V. Anderson
Carcass Traits And Palatability Attributes Of Herdmates Finished As Calves Or Yearling Steers, Perry S. Brewer, Chris R. Calkins, Richard J. Rasby, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rosemary V. Anderson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A two-year study compared steers from the same herd finished as calves or yearlings at a fat thickness endpoint of 0.5 in. Yearlings yielded heavier carcasses with larger ribeye areas, lower marbling scores and lower quality grades. Calves produced more tender steaks measured by shear force and a consumer taste panel. The probability of a tough steak (based on shear force) from calf-fed steers was 1.9 and 0.02% for 7 and 21 days of aging, respectively, while the risk for yearlings was 29.2 and 4.0%, respectively. Calf-fed steers produced more tender steaks and, after 21 days of aging, steaks from …
Basis Variability On The Feeder Cattle Contract Versus The Failed Stocker Contract, Dillon Feuz, Sebastian Perversi, Wendy Umberger
Basis Variability On The Feeder Cattle Contract Versus The Failed Stocker Contract, Dillon Feuz, Sebastian Perversi, Wendy Umberger
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Basis variability was compared in 10 markets for 550 and 750 pound steers using the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) stocker and feeder indexes as a proxy for futures prices. Basis variability for 550 pound steers was significantly greater than basis variability for 750 pound steers. As market volume decreased and as volume variability increased, basis variability also increased. The failed CME stocker contract never attracted enough volume to remain a viable contract. One possible explanation for this contract failure is the basis risk associated with it was large enough to discourage producers from using the contract to hedge calves.
Effect Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid On Cell Death In Adipose Tissue, Kim M. Hargrave, Brett J. Meyer, Jess L. Miner
Effect Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid On Cell Death In Adipose Tissue, Kim M. Hargrave, Brett J. Meyer, Jess L. Miner
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Mice fed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lose body fat. This loss of body fat is accompanied by an increases in DNA fragmentation, indicative of apoptosis or programmed cell death. Adipose apoptosis was observed in mice fed the trans-10, cis-12 isomer or a mixture of isomers but not the cis-9,trans-11 isomer. The trans-10,cis-12 isomer also induced DNA fragmentation in preadipocytes in vitro, but not mature adipocytes. The cis-9,trans-11 CLA isomer, the predominant isomer in ruminant-derived products, was reported to induce apoptosis of cancer cells. Determining the mechanism of action of CLA will improve our understanding of body fat regulation.
Influence Of Implant Regimen On Performance And Carcass Characteristics In Feedlot Steers, Heather L. Haugen, Galen E. Erickson, Court G. Campbell, Casey G. Macken
Influence Of Implant Regimen On Performance And Carcass Characteristics In Feedlot Steers, Heather L. Haugen, Galen E. Erickson, Court G. Campbell, Casey G. Macken
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A feedlot experiment was conducted to evaluate initial and terminal implant combinations in finishing steers. Implant strategies including Synovex Choice increased average daily gain and rib eye area when compared to strategies including Revalor-IS. Steers implanted initially and terminally with Synovex Choice also had increased performance compared to steers implanted initially and terminally with Revalor-IS; however, performance was not different when comparing Synovex Choice verses Revelor-IS as an initial implant (Revalor-S terminal implant). Marbling was similar across implant strategies, indicating the observed increase in performance with Synovex Choice was achieved without negatively influencing carcass quality.
The Influence Of Corn Kernel Traits On Feedlot Cattle Performance, Stephanie L. Jaeger, Casey N. Macken, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian, David S. Jackson
The Influence Of Corn Kernel Traits On Feedlot Cattle Performance, Stephanie L. Jaeger, Casey N. Macken, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian, David S. Jackson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Seven commercially available corn hybrids representing a range within and among kernel traits were used in a finishing trial to evaluate effects of corn kernel traits on feedlot animal performance. Average daily gain, DMI, and hot carcass weight were similar among all corn hybrids. A significant difference in feed conversion of 8.4% from lowest to highest among hybrids was observed. Kernel traits correlated with feed conversion were 1,000 grain weight, stenvert time to grind, and stenvert proportion of soft to coarse particles. Efficiency of finishing cattle gain can be significantly improved by selection of corn hybrids with more desirable kernel …
