Writing As A New Component Of English As A Second Language Programs For Young Russian Children, Elena Voronina
Writing As A New Component Of English As A Second Language Programs For Young Russian Children, Elena Voronina
Graduate Research Papers
This project is based on the fundamental idea that oral and written languages develop simultaneously and mutually support development of each other. Reading and writing are two language processes which are impossible to separate from each other, whether learning one's native language or a foreign language. However, in Russian English Foreign Language (EFL) programs this is not the case. The main focus for five and six year olds in these programs is oral communication, the ability to speak with your partner and comprehend what is being spoken. For young learners writing may facilitate language development. The language becomes not just …
Retrospective Miscue Analysis : A Positive Approach, Lisa Marlene Wright
Retrospective Miscue Analysis : A Positive Approach, Lisa Marlene Wright
Graduate Research Papers
Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) is an assessment and instructional tool that can be used in strengthening reading strategies, comprehension development, and positive reader self-concept. This paper discusses RMA's theoretical background and ways it empowers teachers and students, raises reader self-esteem, and teaches reading strategies such as self-correcting, re-reading and listening for syntactical and semantic cues. Next, I discuss the RMA process, which includes recording the reading session, producing a type script with all of the participants' miscues, as well as a separate script that has only the miscues to be discussed with the reader, marking the miscue analysis sheet, recording …
Content Analysis Of The Changing Roles Of Female Protagonists In Girls Series Novels Written After The Women's Movement, Tina Kathryn Ristau
Content Analysis Of The Changing Roles Of Female Protagonists In Girls Series Novels Written After The Women's Movement, Tina Kathryn Ristau
Graduate Research Papers
While series novels have been popular for many years, the actual roles of females have changed through time. Series novels written in recent years may not reflect the changes women's roles have undergone. Nancy Drew acted as one of the first female protagonists in girls' series novels and provided an intelligent, independent role model for young girls. Series novels written after the Women's Movement in the 1980s and 1990s may not reflect the changing role of women in society.
While researching this problem a content analysis form was used to evaluate five series novels each, from five different girls series. …
Using A School-Wide Diversity Program To Promote Tolerance, Daniel J. Weichers
Using A School-Wide Diversity Program To Promote Tolerance, Daniel J. Weichers
Graduate Research Papers
This paper synthesizes the existing literature on diversity programs that teach tolerance at the secondary school level. It presents a rational for school counselors to include a diversity program as part of their comprehensive guidance program. In short, schools and communities that were once homogenous are increasingly becoming more diverse. Through a successful diversity program, students will experience personal growth and learn to become citizens of changing local communities as well as the global community.
Dirty Bombs: The Threat Revisited, Peter D. Zimmerman, Cheryl Loeb
Dirty Bombs: The Threat Revisited, Peter D. Zimmerman, Cheryl Loeb
Defense Horizons
Nuclear radiation, invisible and detectable only with special instruments, has the power to terrify—in part because of its association with nuclear weapons—and to become an instrument of terrorists. Radioactive isotopes can be spread widely with or without high explosives by a radiological dispersion device (RDD) or so-called dirty bomb. This paper provides a general overview of the nature of RDDs and sources of material for them and estimates the effects of an assault, including casualties and economic consequences. Many experts believe that an RDD is an economic weapon capable of inflicting devastating damage on the United States. This paper is …

In this chapter, we motivate one potential type of future QA system that deals with questions more complex than simple factoid questions and which provides answers with their supporting context. Our approach is based on the issues we faced when developing and delivering a QA system to deal with real time questions in the domain of RLVs within the larger field of aerospace engineering. This particular domain, the actual users of the system, and the questions asked, all demanded a change in our question-answering strategy. First, the chapter will present background on the project that provided the context and a …

Exploring A Cognitive Basis For Learning Spatial Relationships With Augmented Reality, Brett E. Shelton, Nicholas R. Hedley
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Augmented reality (AR) is an emergent class of interface that presents compelling possibilities for advancing spatial visualization. We offer a brief overview of AR technology and current research with in the educational realm. AR interfaces appear to provide a unique combination of visual display properties, modes of user manipulation, and interaction with spatial information. Drawing upon aspects of proprioception and sensorimotor function, we discuss how AR may have a unique and powerful link to spatial knowledge acquisition through visuo-motor involvement in the processing of information. We identify key properties of AR interfaces and how they differ from conventional visualization interfaces, …

Computer-supported coordinated care uses technology to aid the network of people who support an elder living at home. The authors conducted interviews with people involved in the care of elders to identify their needs and subsequently conducted an in situ evaluation of a technology probe to study how a CSCC system might help satisfy these needs. The authors used these results to identify challenges faced by people caring for elders and offer guidelines for designers of coordinated care technologies.

Continuous flow polymerase chain reaction (CFPCR) devices are compact reactors suitable for microfabrication and the rapid amplification of target DNAs. For a given reactor design, the amplification time can be reduced simply by increasing the flow velocity through the isothermal zones of the device; for flow velocities near the design value, the PCR cocktail reaches thermal equilibrium at each zone quickly, so that near ideal temperature profiles can be obtained. However, at high flow velocities there are penalties of an increased pressure drop and a reduced residence time in each temperature zone for the DNA/reagent mixture, that potentially affect amplification …

The African System On Human And Peoples' Rights, Quasi-Constructivism, And The Possibility Of Peacebuilding Within African States, Obiora Chinedu Okafor
Articles & Book Chapters
This article examines the influence that IHIs (such as the African System on Human and Peoples' Rights) can exert within states, with the facilitative work of local popular forces, and relates that to the possibility of valuable IHI contributions to peacebuilding within deeply fragmented African states. Of all the existing approaches to the study of IHIs, constructivism comes the closest to accounting for the highly significant incidences of IHIjostered (and popular forces-facilitated) 'correspondence' that occurs outside the 'compliance radar'. In this sense the article is a contribution to the growing constructivist human rights and institutional literature sets. In particular the …
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Advection-Dispersion Equation, Zhi Qiang Deng, Vijay P. Singh, Lars Bengtsson
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Advection-Dispersion Equation, Zhi Qiang Deng, Vijay P. Singh, Lars Bengtsson
Faculty Publications
Numerical schemes and stability criteria are developed for solution of the one-dimensional fractional advection-dispersion equation (FRADE) derived by revising Fick's first law. Employing 74 sets of dye test data measured on natural streams, it is found that the fractional order F of the partial differential operator acting on the dispersion term varies around the most frequently occurring value of F=1.65 in the range of 1.4 to 2.0. Two series expansions are proposed for approximation of the limit definitions of fractional derivatives. On this ground, two three-term finite-difference schemes - "1.3 Backward Scheme"having the first-order accuracy and "F.3 Central Scheme"possessing the …

Effects Of Familiar Background Music On Working Memory And Motor Tracking, Donald J. Polzella, Scott Schoeling
Psychology Faculty Publications
Poster session presented at the meeting of the Psychonomic Society. Two groups of college students participated as listeners or non-listeners, based on whether or not they preferred background music while working or studying. Both groups were trained according to standardized memory search and unstable motor tracking task protocols. Testing consisted of multiple trials at varying levels of difficulty with and without familiar background music. Background music enhanced motor tracking, particularly when the task was challenging. In contrast, background music disrupted aspects of working memory. There were no differences between listeners and non-listeners. The results suggest that, regardless of an individual’s …

Estimation Of Drag Coefficient In James River Estuary Using Tidal Velocity Data From A Vessel-Towed Adcp, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Larry P. Atkinson, Kuo Chuin Wong, Kamazima M. M. Lwiza
CCPO Publications
[1] A phase-matching method is introduced to calculate the bottom drag coefficient in tidal channels with significant lateral variation of depth. The method is based on the fact that the bottom friction in a tidal channel causes tidal velocity to have a phase difference across the channel. The calculation involves a few steps. First, the observed horizontal velocity components are analyzed to obtain the amplitude and phase of the velocity at the major tidal frequency. The phase of the longitudinal velocity is then fitted to a relationship derived from the linearized momentum balance. The drag coefficient is then calculated. This …

A biochemically based model was developed to simulate the growth, development, and metamorphosis of larvae of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). The unique characteristics of the model are that it: (1) defines larvae in terms of their protein, neutral lipid, polar lipid, carbohydrate, and ash content; (2) tracks weight separately from length to follow larval condition; and (3) includes genetic variation in growth efficiency and egg quality to better simulate cohort population dynamics. The model includes parameterizations for filtration, ingestion, and respiration, which determine larval growth rate, and processes controlling larval mortality and metamorphosis. Changes in larval tissue …

Lagrangian Modelling Studies Of Antarctic Krill (Euphausia Superba) Swarm Formation, Eileen E. Hofmann, A. G. Edward Haskell, John M. Klinck, Cathy M. Lascara
CCPO Publications
A two-dimensional Lagrangian particle model was developed to examine the spatial distribution of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). The time-dependent location of particles, which represent krill individuals, is determined by random diffusion, foraging activity, and movement induced by the presence of neighbours. Foraging activity is based on prescribed food conditions and is such that krill swim slower and turn more frequently in areas of high food concentration. The presence or absence of neighbours either disperses krill, if the local concentrations become too dense, or coalesces krill, if concentrations become too dilute, respectively. Predation on krill is included and affects …

Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin
Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin
School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications
The development of on-line learning communities across international boundaries is now a viable proposition using available asynchronous technologies. As has been reported in previous papers (Grodzinsky, Griffin & Jefferies, 2002; Griffin, Grodzinsky & Jefferies, 2002) such use has proved to be extremely valuable for supporting the teaching of computing and ethics. For example, not only does asynchronous computer conferencing offer new opportunities for students to gain valuable first-hand experience in using such technology to communicate with peers in other countries but it also facilitates them gaining a more direct appreciation of the cultural, legal and ethical differences that abound. However, …

The Political Economy Of The Indie Blockbuster: Fandom, Intermediality, And The Blair Witch Project, James Castonguay
Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications
The primary focus of this chapter is on what could be broadly described as The Blair Witch Project's political economy. This includes a consideration of the film's relationship to patterns of ownership and the economic structures of film production, distribution, and marketing within the structure of the entertainment industry and in the context of its critical and popular reception. The second half of the essay historicizes BWP in relation to film production and exhibition in the 1890s, and concludes with an examination of its mythic status as an independent film that threatened to undermine Hollywood's blockbuster paradigm. By placing …
Applying Traditional And Proportional Aspects Of Form To Atonal Music, Daniel J. Arthurs
Applying Traditional And Proportional Aspects Of Form To Atonal Music, Daniel J. Arthurs
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Theory teachers can encounter several problems when presenting atonal (and more specifically, twelve-tone) techniques to their students for the first time. Among these problems is the need to find creative ways to motivate student interest in styles which may be unfamiliar, or with which they may be less than favorably disposed. Many students close their ears to the music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern when first exposed to that repertoire. One must invest a considerable amount of time to understand the complexity, wit, and aesthetic thought of composers who use twelve-tone technique. This discussion will present two possible ways to …
Taking Stock Of Collections - A Strategy For Teaching The Analysis Of Post-Tonal Music, Brian Alegant, Gordon Sly
Taking Stock Of Collections - A Strategy For Teaching The Analysis Of Post-Tonal Music, Brian Alegant, Gordon Sly
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Analysis is difficult. Teaching analysis is even more difficult. It is especially challenging to coax students to venture beyond the identification of things - formal sections, thematic ideas - toward consideration of the distinguishing qualities of individual works. In the area of post-tonal or extended-tonal music, several writings address the enterprise of analysis, including textbooks by Joel Lester, Joseph Straus, and J. Kent Williams. While each book takes a different approach, their philosophical orientations and strategies are similar. Each provides a solid theoretical backdrop, which includes various tools for describing and manipulating pitch-class collections, then uses analytical examples to illustrate …
The Importance Of License In The Pedogogy Of Model Composition, Past And Present, Matthew Bailey-Shea
The Importance Of License In The Pedogogy Of Model Composition, Past And Present, Matthew Bailey-Shea
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
In part three of Le Istitutioni Harmoniche (1558), Zarlino, after citing a wide variety of contrapuntal rules, makes the following statement: The observation of the above rules may so restrict a composer that he is unable to write beautiful and graceful lines or to write his parts in fugue or consequence as he would wish. He may for this reason occasionally deviate from the rules. Such license is conceded to poets, who at times depart from metric rules by using one sound for another or a long syllable in place of a short one, and vice versa. Musicians may also …
