Family Affairs Newsletter 2004-11-01, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs Newsletter 2004-11-01, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
The Shallow Water Equations In Lagrangian Coordinates, J. L. Mead
The Shallow Water Equations In Lagrangian Coordinates, J. L. Mead
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent advances in the collection of Lagrangian data from the ocean and results about the well-posedness of the primitive equations have led to a renewed interest in solving flow equations in Lagrangian coordinates. We do not take the view that solving in Lagrangian coordinates equates to solving on a moving grid that can become twisted or distorted. Rather, the grid in Lagrangian coordinates represents the initial position of particles, and it does not change with time. However, using Lagrangian coordinates results in solving a highly nonlinear partial differential equation. The nonlinearity is mainly due to the Jacobian of the coordinate …
Measurement And Assessment Of Efficiency And Productivity In Kentucky State Government Services, William H. Hoyt
Measurement And Assessment Of Efficiency And Productivity In Kentucky State Government Services, William H. Hoyt
CBER Research Report
Excerpt from the executive summary:
This report examines the provision of a variety of government services within Kentucky. The provision of these public services, specifically the cost of providing these services is examined for the years 1992, 1997, and 2002. In addition, employment and salaries in government services are also examined. In addition to comparing costs within Kentucky during this period, the costs of providing public services are also compared to costs of the same government services by its neighboring states (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia).

Does Delaware's Section 102(B)(7) Protect Reckless Directors From Personal Liability? Only If Delaware Courts Act In Good Faith, Matthew R. Berry
Does Delaware's Section 102(B)(7) Protect Reckless Directors From Personal Liability? Only If Delaware Courts Act In Good Faith, Matthew R. Berry
Washington Law Review
Section 102(b)(7) of the Delaware Corporate Code allows a corporation to amend its certificate of incorporation to exculpate directors from all duty of due care violations. The Delaware General Assembly enacted this law in response to the shrinking pool of qualified directors, which was caused by the Delaware State Supreme Court's decision in Smith v. Van Gorkom that imposed personal liability on directors for gross negligence. Delaware courts have unequivocally stated that section 102(b)(7) protects directors against personal liability arising from gross negligence, but not against liability arising from a lack of good faith. However, Delaware courts have not provided …
Lucky For Life: A More Realistic And Reasonable Estate Tax Valuation For Nontransferable Lottery Winnings, Kyla C.E. Grogan
Lucky For Life: A More Realistic And Reasonable Estate Tax Valuation For Nontransferable Lottery Winnings, Kyla C.E. Grogan
Washington Law Review
When a lottery winner dies after receiving only a few annuity payments from the state, the winner's estate must pay federal estate tax on the balance of the annuity. If the lottery prize is not legally transferable, the winner's estate cannot sell or pledge the right to future payments in order to generate funds to pay the estate tax. The estate tax value of an annuity is generally based on valuation tables that discount the future payments to present value. However, these valuation tables do not control when they produce an unrealistic and unreasonable result. The United States Courts of …

Making Mommies: The Washington State Court Of Appeals Exceeded Its Authority By Creating A Common Law Parentage Action In In Re Parentage Of L.B., Thomas G. Robinson-O'Neill
Washington Law Review
In In re Parentage of L.B., Division I of the Washington State Court of Appeals created a new common law cause of action that allows a same-sex de facto parent to be declared a legal parent. In the alternative, the court held that a de facto parent has a cause of action under Washington's nonparental visitation statute. This Note argues that the court exceeded its authority in creating a common law cause of action because the Uniform Parentage Act and the statutory scheme preempt the common law. Further, this Note argues that the ability of a de facto parent …

Learning 'Through' Or Learning 'About'? The Ridiculous And Extravagant Medium Of Opera : Gardner's Multiple Intellegences In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Julie White, Mary Dixon, Lynda Smerdon
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In recent years, pre-service teacher education has attempted to incorporate into programs an understanding of Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences as it applies to schools. In this paper the tension between ‘learning about’ multiple intelligences and ‘learning through’ multiple intelligences supports Gardner’s (1993) distinction between ‘understanding’ and ‘coverage’. This paper examines the use of the performing arts in the professional studies component of our teacher education program. During 2002 at The University of Melbourne, a group of education students were offered the opportunity to develop an opera in order to learn about assessment and curriculum. Thirty-seven of the students volunteered …
Assessing The Nature Of Science Views Of Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers, Tan L. Thye, Boo H. Kwen
Assessing The Nature Of Science Views Of Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers, Tan L. Thye, Boo H. Kwen
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Despite the many developments in the teaching of science, an aspect that continues to be neglected appears to be the character and nature of science (NOS). This is becoming especially important in the light of recent developments in pedagogy, as, for example, more teachers adopt constructivist methodologies and computing technology enables simulations that may blur the lines between models and reality. From the literature, it is known that teachers' modern NOS conceptions, though not a sufficient condition for transmission of modern NOS views, is necessary. In this study, pre-service teachers' NOS conceptions are assessed with an adapted Views of the …

Community Health Sciences
Objective: Assess the perception of stress amongst medical students and their coping strategies. Methodology/Study Design: A cross sectional study using a semi-structured self administered questionnaire was carried out over four weeks, using a small sample of students of all categories and classes of a medical college.
Results: A total of 264 students out of 300 (88%) filled in the questionnaire. Inability to cope, helplessness, increased psychological pressure, mental tension and too much workload are 'stress factors' for students. A considerable majority (> 90%) think that they have been stressed at one time or another. Ninety-four per cent of males have …

Solids in Risers of Circulating Fluidized Beds (CFB) Exhibit Local Backflow and Recirculation. Measurement of the Concentration-Time Response to an Impulse Injection of Tracer, Even at Two Elevations Cannot Determine the Residence Time Distribution (RTD) of Solids Uniquely. Hence, Evaluation of RTD in Risers from Conventional Tracer Responses is Difficult and Often Not Possible. in Addition, Estimating the Solids Circulation Rate in These Closed Loop Systems, is a Non-Trivial Problem. in This Work, a Single Radioactive Particle in the CFB Loop is Tracked during its Multiple Visits to the Riser And, by Invoking Ergodicity, Solids Circulation Rate, Accurate Solids RTD …

Optimization Of Batch Reactions In Series With Uncertainty, Keith G. Tomazi
Optimization Of Batch Reactions In Series With Uncertainty, Keith G. Tomazi
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Certain types of chemical reactions, such as the global deprotection of a polypeptide, are extremely complex. As a result, it may be very difficult or expensive to develop accurate models of these chemical reactions. Without a satisfactory kinetic model for the reaction, it is difficult to develop an optimum operating policy that will maximize the profit. Stochastic optimization is applied in this work to an example process step to obtain the optimum reaction temperature and reaction time. In the case of the "here and now" problem, the optimal conditions are a lower reaction temperature and a longer reaction time than …
Two-Loop Bethe Logarithms For Higher Excited S Levels, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Two-Loop Bethe Logarithms For Higher Excited S Levels, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Processes mediated by two virtual low-energy photons contribute quite significantly to the energy of hydrogenic S states. The corresponding level shift is of the order of ( α / π )2 ( Z α )6 mec2 and may be ascribed to a two-loop generalization of the Bethe logarithm. For 1 S and 2 S states, the correction has recently been evaluated by Pachucki and Jentschura [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 113005 (2003)]. Here, we generalize the approach to higher excited S states, which in contrast to the 1 S and 2 S states can decay to …
Butterfly Proboscis Length And Pollen Load, November 2004, Charles Mccanna
Butterfly Proboscis Length And Pollen Load, November 2004, Charles Mccanna
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Pollination mutualisms between plants and pollinators facilitate increases in genetic variability for plants while providing rewards for pollinators. Specialization of pollinators on specific plants has occurred to maximize benefits of these pollination mutualisms. With this specialization, pollination syndromes have evolved that increase a flower’s chance of eliciting visitation of a specific pollinator. For example, “butterfly flowers” have evolved bright colors, short to medium corollas, and strong scents that tend to attract butterflies. However, some of these flowers have evolved long corollas to specialize on long proboscis butterflies. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of corolla length …

A Review Of Eric Till's Film Luther, Edmund J. Campion
A Review Of Eric Till's Film Luther, Edmund J. Campion
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This is a very curious movie about the great German reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) that pleased neither Protestants nor Catholics. This is not to say that this film by the prolific director Eric Till is without value. The quality of the cinematography is extraordinary. The outside scenes were filmed in well-preserved late medieval churches, monasteries, and castles and this enables viewers to learn about early modem architecture in central Europe. Many scenes were actually filmed in the Czech Republic perhaps because production costs are significantly more expensive in Germany than in the Czech Republic. The major reason for seeing this …
