Project Report No. 66, Metric Volume And Biomass Prediction Equations For Loblolly And Slash Pine Trees Planted In Unmanaged Pine Plantations In East Texas, Dean W. Coble, Young-Jin Lee, J. David Lenhart
Project Report No. 66, Metric Volume And Biomass Prediction Equations For Loblolly And Slash Pine Trees Planted In Unmanaged Pine Plantations In East Texas, Dean W. Coble, Young-Jin Lee, J. David Lenhart
Informal Project Reports
Metric equations are presented to predict the volume of wood and/or biomass contained in individual loblolly (Pinus taeda, L.) and slash (Pinus elliottii, Englem.) pine trees growing in unmanaged pine plantations in east Texas. Taper equations are also presented for both species that describe tree form in metric units.

Project Report No. 65, Stumpage Price Trends Of Sawtimber And Pulpwood In East Texas And Louisiana, Dean W. Coble, Shiaolin Cheng
Informal Project Reports
A fifteen-year stumpage price update and analysis for pine and hardwood in East Texas are reported. Thepricesofsawtimberandpulpwoodare presented for both pine and hardwood plantations by using 1988 to 2003 stumpage prices from the Texas Forest Service and Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Timber prices increased steadily from 1988 to the late 1990's, peaked, then declined into 2003 for both Louisiana and Texas. Louisiana prices, though, have remained higher than those for Texas.

Frost Damaged Or Immature Corn: Forage Options, Cody Wright, Kent Tjardes, Alvaro Garcia, Peter Jeranyama
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Delayed spring planting and early frost can each contribute to significant reductions in grain yield and (or) the value of the grain due to low test weight or high moisture. Under these circumstances, consider alternative harvest options for your corn crop. One viable option is to harvest the crop as forage. Generally, the first option producers think of when faced with immature or frost-damaged corn is to chop the fields for silage or earlage. While this method of harvest will work extremely well and can provide several tons of high quality feed, it may not be the best option if …

Spatially Adaptive Bayesian P-Splines With Heteroscedastic Errors, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, Raymond J. Carroll
Spatially Adaptive Bayesian P-Splines With Heteroscedastic Errors, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, Raymond J. Carroll
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
An increasingly popular tool for nonparametric smoothing are penalized splines (P-splines) which use low-rank spline bases to make computations tractable while maintaining accuracy as good as smoothing splines. This paper extends penalized spline methodology by both modeling the variance function nonparametrically and using a spatially adaptive smoothing parameter. These extensions have been studied before, but never together and never in the multivariate case. This combination is needed for satisfactory inference and can be implemented effectively by Bayesian \mbox{MCMC}. The variance process controlling the spatially-adaptive shrinkage of the mean and the variance of the heteroscedastic error process are modeled as log-penalized …

A constitutional issue recently addressed by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in United States v. Awadallah, 349 F.3d 42 (2003), has not received the widespread attention of high-profile litigation concerning the Justice Department's other controversial counter-terrorism policies. It is equally important. The issue arises out of Attorney General Ashcroft's announcement shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that the aggressive detention of material witnesses [was] vital to preventing, disrupting or delaying new attacks. Since that time, the Department of Justice has used the federal material witness statute (18 U.S.C. Section 3144) to …

Traffic congestion will continue to worsen and likely worsen at a faster rate than ever. People throughput and freight throughput have become critical issues for California and the rest of the nation. PATH has funded with approximately $125K a research project entitled “Evaluation of Bus and Truck Automation Scenarios” jointly proposed by Jan Botha (Principal Investigator) of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Jacob Tsao (Co-PI) of Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at San Jose State University. This report summarizes the major findings of the research conducted by Professor Tsao and his assistants with approximately $44K out of …

Pastoralist Livestock Marketing Behavior In Northern Kenya And Southern Ethiopia: An Analysis Of Constraints Limiting Off-Take Rates, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak, Winnie Luseno, Peter D. Little, Sharon M. Osterloh, Hussein Mahmoud, Getachu Gebru
Economics - All Scholarship
Pastoralists in East Africa's arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) regularly confront climatic shocks that plunge them into massive herd die-offs and loss of scarce wealth. One of the most puzzling features of pastoralist behavior in times of stress has been their relatively low and non-responsive rate of marketed off-take of animals when faced with likely losses to herd mortality. As Figure 1, from Desta (1999), finds in 17-year herd history data from Borana pastoralists in southern Ethiopia, mortality always exceeds net sales as a share of beginning period herd size, with the latter never exceeding three percent and moving hardly …

Integration Through Narrative, Michael E. Cafferky
Integration Through Narrative, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
The purpose of this paper is to test the proposition that narrative contains an inherent power for integration of faith, life, and learning of business principles. This is done by a process of reviewing assertions from selected disciplines with the revealed will of God in Scripture. To accomplish this, the paper explores narrative in the context of cultural anthropology, education, business, and religion. From these fields, several parallels can be seen, and several values of narrative for the university business school classroom emerge. The concluding thoughts suggest how instructors can use stories for faith, life, and learning integration.

Stressing Concepts And Teaching In The Classroom: A Low-Technology Approach Using Concept Tests And Classroom Polls, Walter S. Borowski
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Electronic student response technologies can be used effectively to increase learning in the classroom. Although these systems are not terribly expensive, their purchase may be out of reach for many departments and institutions. Here we model a low-technology approach that stresses active learning, peer teaching, and testing student understanding of key concepts by using think-pair-share sessions and in-class responses to key concept-test questions.
Questions used in class are chosen carefully to emphasize a concept essential to understanding some aspect of geoscience in an introductory geology course. Each class involves the introduction of a key concept question or questions followed by: …

A Maximal Chain Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor Systems, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Scheduling dependent tasks is one of the most challenging versions of the scheduling problem in parallel and distributed systems. It is known to be computationally intractable in its general form as well as several restricted cases. As a result, researchers have studied restricted forms of the problem by constraining either the task graph representing the parallel tasks or the computer model. Also, in an attempt to solve the problem in the general case, a number of heuristics have been developed. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a fixed number of processors m. In the proposed work, we …
