Thermally Developing Electro-Osmotic Convection In Circular Microchannels, Spencer L. Broderick Nov 2004

Thermally Developing Electro-Osmotic Convection In Circular Microchannels, Spencer L. Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

Thermally developing, electro-osmotically generated flow has been analyzed for a circular microtube under imposed constant wall temperature (CWT) and constant wall heat flux (CHF) boundary conditions. Established by a voltage potential gradient along the length of the microtube, the hydrodynamics of such a flow dictate either a slug flow velocity profile (under conditions of large tube radius-to-Debye length ratio, a/lambda_d) or a family of electro-osmotic flow (EOF) velocity profiles that depend on a/lambda_d. The imposed voltage gradient results in Joule heating in the fluid with an associated volumetric source of energy. For this scenario coupled with a slug flow velocity …

Effects Of Different Jumping Programs On Hip And Spine Bone Mineral Density In Pre-Menopausal Women, J. Eric Strong Nov 2004

Effects Of Different Jumping Programs On Hip And Spine Bone Mineral Density In Pre-Menopausal Women, J. Eric Strong

Theses and Dissertations

Sixty premenopausal women (age 25-50) finished a 16 week randomized controlled trial looking at the effects of different jump programs on hip and spine bone mineral density (BMD). Subjects were randomly assigned to a control group or one of two jumping groups. The Jump 10 group performed 10 jumps with 30 seconds of rest between jumps, twice daily, while the Jump 20 group performed the same protocol but with 20 jumps. At 8 weeks, BMD percent change (%Δ) at the hip was significantly different among groups when age, weight change, and subject compliance were simultaneously adjusted. In particular, the Jump …

Obesity adversely affects cardiac function, increases the risk factors for coronary heart disease, and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The risk of developing coronary heart disease is directly related to the concomitant burden of obesity-related risk factors. Modest weight loss can improve diastolic function and affect the entire cluster of coronary heart disease risk factors simultaneously. This statement from the American Heart Association Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism reviews the relationship between obesity and the cardiovascular system, evaluates the effect of weight loss on coronary heart disease risk factors and coronary heart disease, and provides …

C-Terminal 23 Kda Polypeptide Of Soybean Gly M Bd 28 K Is A Potential Allergen, Ping Xiang, Eric J. Haas, Michael G. Zeece, John P. Markwell, Gautam Sarath

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Gly m Bd 28 K is a major soybean (Glycine max Merr.) glycoprotein allergen. It was originally identified as a 28 kDa polypeptide in soybean seed flour. However, the full-length protein is encoded by an open reading frame (ORF) of 473 amino acids, and contains a 23 kDa C-terminal polypeptide of as yet unknown allergenic and structural characteristics. IgE-binding (allergenic potential) of the Gly m Bd 28 K protein including the 23 kDa C-terminal portion as well as shorter fragments derived from the full-length ORF were evaluated using sera from soy-sensitive adults. All of these sera contained IgE that …

Detailed Geochemical And Mineralogical Analyses Of Naturally Occurring Arsenic In The Hawthorn Group, Olesya Lazareva Nov 2004

Detailed Geochemical And Mineralogical Analyses Of Naturally Occurring Arsenic In The Hawthorn Group, Olesya Lazareva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In order to understand the mineralogical association and distribution of arsenic (As) in the Hawthorn Group in central Florida, I examined in detail the chemical and mineralogical composition of 361 samples that were collected from 16 cores. Geochemical analyses were performed by hydride generation - atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The identification of discrete minerals was aided by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical compositions were obtained by electron-probe microanalyses (EMPA).

Arsenic concentrations for all Hawthorn samples vary from 0.1 to 69.0 ppm with a mean of 5.6 ppm. Average As concentrations for …

Rules Of The Game: The "Play In The Joints" Between The Religion Clauses, Sharon Keller Nov 2004

Rules Of The Game: The "Play In The Joints" Between The Religion Clauses, Sharon Keller

ExpressO

Locke v. Davey is an exemplar of the new generation of Establishment clause cases that, particularly in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris, have written into law a safe harbor, private choice, for governmental benefits that find their way into the coffers of religious institutions in amounts that are neither incidental nor trivial. In Locke the options presented in the private choice arguably infringed upon Free Exercise rights-- the dilemma that gives rise to the title of this article. Over the vigorous dissent of Justice Scalia, the Locke Court’s analysis of the permissibility of the conditioned benefit was based upon the argument that …

Unsafe Radwaste Disposal At Wipp, Citizens For Alternatives To Radioactive Dumping (Card), Davis Snow Dr. Nov 2004

Unsafe Radwaste Disposal At Wipp, Citizens For Alternatives To Radioactive Dumping (Card), Davis Snow Dr.

Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping (CARD)

At WIPP, radioactive waste is being disposed of permanently in drums and boxes placed in rooms excavated in the Salado salt beds. Like all other excavations below the water table, the repository will saturate, and dissolved radioactivity can ultimately escape via boreholes, shaft.s or fractures to the overlying Rustler evaporites. The most evident aquifer in the Rustler, the Culebra dolomite, is claimed by DOE to provide such slow transport that the Rustler can be considered an adequate barrier to waste migration. But performance assessment modeling, based on insufficient exploration data, unsupportable deductions and faulty assumptions led to that claim. This …

Elasticity Of Substitution And The Persistence Of The Deviation Of The Real Exchange Rates, A.K.M. Mahbub Morshed, Stephen J. Turnovsky Nov 2004

Elasticity Of Substitution And The Persistence Of The Deviation Of The Real Exchange Rates, A.K.M. Mahbub Morshed, Stephen J. Turnovsky

Economics Discussion Papers

Empirical evidence suggests (i) that the real exchange rates of developing economies show less persistence than do those of more advanced economies and (ii) that the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor tends to increase from below unity for less developed economies to above one for more advanced economies. This paper shows how the introduction of sectoral adjustment costs in a two-sector model of a small open economy, together with CES production functions, provides a very natural explanation of this empirical regularity. Other aspects of the relationship between the technologies and the speed of convergence of the real exchange …

Plea Bargains Only For The Guilty, Oren Gazal, Oren Bar-Gill Nov 2004

Plea Bargains Only For The Guilty, Oren Gazal, Oren Bar-Gill

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

A major concern with plea bargains is that innocent defendants will be induced to plead guilty. This paper argues that the law can address this concern by providing prosecutors with incentives to select cases in which the probability of guilt is high. By restricting the permissible sentence reduction in a plea bargain the law can preclude plea bargains in cases where the probability of conviction is low (L cases). The prosecutor will therefore be forced to – (1) select fewer L cases and proceed to trial with these cases; or (2) select more cases with a higher probability of conviction …
