Deregulation And Its Implications For Economic Growth, B.E. Aigbokhan Dec 2004

Deregulation And Its Implications For Economic Growth, B.E. Aigbokhan

Economic and Financial Review

The study found that real exchange rate has a positive and significant impact on growth, inflation has similar impact. Government fixed investment has negative significant impact on growth, and so does external debt. Fiscal deficit was found to have positive but insignificant impact on growth. As the period covered in the study contains twenty six pre-deregulation years, the influence of deregulation may not have been accurately captured. Partly to address this concern, a dummy variables was introduced for the SAP years. It was found not to be significant, implying that the (SAP) introduced since 1986 did not translate into long-run …

Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases And Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatases Mediate The Inhibitory Effects Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid On The Hypertrophic Growth Of Cardiomyocytes, Ants Palm-Leis, Ugra S. Singh, Bradley S. Herbelin, Greg D. Olsovsky, Kenneth M. Baker, Jing Pan

ETSU Faculty Works

All-trans retinoic acid (RA) has been implicated in mediation of cardiac growth inhibition in neonatal cardiomyocytes. However, the associated signaling mechanisms remain unclear. Utilizing neonatal cardiomyocytes, we demonstrated that RA suppressed the hypertrophic features induced by cyclic stretch or angiotensin II (Ang II). Cyclic stretch- or Ang II-induced activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) was dose- and time-dependently inhibited by RA. Significant inhibition was observed by 5 μM RA, from 8 to 24 h of pretreatment. This inhibitory effect was not mediated at the level of mitogen-activated protein …

Toward A Systems Approach To Understanding Plant Cell Walls, Chris Somerville, Stefan Bauer, Ginger Brininstool, Michelle Facette, Thorsten Hamann, Jennifer Milne, Erin Osborne, Alex Paredez, Staffan Persson, Ted Raab, Sonja Vorwerk, Heather Youngs Dec 2004

Toward A Systems Approach To Understanding Plant Cell Walls, Chris Somerville, Stefan Bauer, Ginger Brininstool, Michelle Facette, Thorsten Hamann, Jennifer Milne, Erin Osborne, Alex Paredez, Staffan Persson, Ted Raab, Sonja Vorwerk, Heather Youngs

Faculty Publications

One of the defining features of plants is a body plan based on the physical properties of cell walls. Structural analyses of the polysaccharide components, combined with high-resolution imaging, have provided the basis for much of the current understanding of cell walls. The application of genetic methods has begun to provide new insights into how walls are made, how they are controlled, and how they function. However, progress in integrating biophysical, developmental, and genetic information into a useful model will require a system-based approach.

Quantum Zeno And Anti-Zeno Effects: An Exact Model, T. C. Dorlas, R. F. O'Connell Dec 2004

Quantum Zeno And Anti-Zeno Effects: An Exact Model, T. C. Dorlas, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

Recent studies suggest that both the quantum Zeno (increase of the natural lifetime of an unstable quantum state by repeated measurements) and anti-Zeno (decrease of the natural lifetime) effects can be made manifest in the same system by simply changing the dissipative decay rate associated with the environment. Here, we present a model which incorporates the effect of the environment in an exact manner leading to a confirmation of this expectation.

Clustering And Classification Methods For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2004

Clustering And Classification Methods For Gene Expression Data Analysis, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Efficient use of the large data sets generated by gene expression microarray experiments requires computerized data analysis approaches. In this chapter we briefly describe and illustrate two broad families of commonly used data analysis methods: class discovery and class prediction methods. A wide range of alternative approaches for clustering and classification of gene expression data are available. While differences in efficiency do exist, none of the well established approaches is uniformly superior to others. Choosing an approach requires consideration of the goals of the analysis, the background knowledge, and the specific experimental constraints. The quality of an algorithm is important, …
