Including Organizational Cultural Parameters In Work Processes, Holly A. H. Handley, Nancy J. Heacox Jan 2004

Including Organizational Cultural Parameters In Work Processes, Holly A. H. Handley, Nancy J. Heacox

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Recent work in modeling decision-making work processes has focused on including the national culture of individual decision-makers in order to emphasize the differences in decision criteria between decision-makers of different nationalities. In addition to nationality, a decision-maker is also a member of an organization and brings this organizational culture to his role in the work process, where it may also affect his task performance. In order to represent the organizational impact on the work process, five organizational cultural parameters were identified and included in an algorithm for modeling and simulation of cultural difference in human decision-making. While the five modifiers …

Autumn, Christine Anne Marie Sciarrino Jan 2004

Autumn, Christine Anne Marie Sciarrino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Autumn is a short story cycle set in contemporary times, primarily in a South Florida village, using the viewpoints of two main characters: Angie Frisby and Chatov Faulke. It offers an example of the short story cycle through repeated and developed characters, recurring themes, imagery, setting, and shifting points of view. It will employ closure strategies that present an image of the future for both Angie and Chat, implying continuation of the story and/or characters, and how they might go down a multiplicity of different roads. In its desire to remain ambiguous, the conflicts surrounding Angie's and Chat's relationship will …

Courtisanes Et Modeles: Representations De La Femme Juive Dans La Litterature Francaise Du Dix-Neuvieme Siecle, David. Silverstein Jan 2004

Courtisanes Et Modeles: Representations De La Femme Juive Dans La Litterature Francaise Du Dix-Neuvieme Siecle, David. Silverstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The realist authors of nineteenth-century France consistently represent the Jewish woman as the epitome of beauty and intelligence. While glorifying her image, this representation betrays a complex system of social and gender bias. By examining selected works of Balzac, the freres Goncourt, and Maupassant, a nuanced transformation can be traced in the representation of the Jewish woman. As a literary figure negotiating a social system that emphasizes her religious identity, she is celebrated, vilified, and ultimately transformed into a heroine by virtue of her courage rather than her physical attributes.

Idee De L'Amour Dans Le Couple Chez Beauvoir, Marie-Pierre. Grosjean Jan 2004

Idee De L'Amour Dans Le Couple Chez Beauvoir, Marie-Pierre. Grosjean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

One of the constants in Beauvoir's work is her lifelong attention to the phenomenon of love and the idea of the couple. In her philosophy as well as in her fiction, she develops a binary concept of love. On the one hand is "authentic love," connoting respect and reciprocity; on the other is "inauthentic love," a function of conquest and annexation. Because of her adherence to the tenets of Existentialism, Beauvoir, the feminist, skillfully negotiates between the notions of love and freedom.

"And Yet God Has Not Said A Word!": Robert Browning And The Romantic Killer In Literature, Erin. Burns-Davies Jan 2004

"And Yet God Has Not Said A Word!": Robert Browning And The Romantic Killer In Literature, Erin. Burns-Davies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Robert Browning's dramatic monologues often characterize the darker aspect of romantic love through speakers who demonstrate their devotion to violence. Exploring the innovations in discourse, Browning gives his narrators voices that allow them to speak from an ancient literary tradition. For Browning's speakers, words make the silencing of the lover either the act of ultimate devotion or the result of disappointed expectations. The narrator speaks of the absence of God, as when Porphyria's lover holds her body to him: "and yet God has not said a word!" With the poet's strong speech---in all his attractiveness, his destructive display of love …

Revisiting Christopher Fry: Sacred Temporality On A Modern Stage, Lucas H. Harriman Jan 2004

Revisiting Christopher Fry: Sacred Temporality On A Modern Stage, Lucas H. Harriman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Christopher Fry was instrumental in the early twentieth-century resurgence of plays dealing with religious themes. This movement can at first be seen as anomalous within the era of modernism, when many writers and theorists considered religious sentiment to be a barrier to the more crucial aspects of living authentically within a modern society haunted by history. Nevertheless, Fry's particular appropriation of a sacred conceptualization of time on the modern stage reveals a degree of congruity between him and his contemporaries in their varied attempts to represent transcendent value on the stage without simultaneously removing the audience from their own historical …

Time, Place, And Agency In "Richard Ii", Jennifer Sunshine Goddard Jan 2004

Time, Place, And Agency In "Richard Ii", Jennifer Sunshine Goddard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In Richard II, Shakespeare left lessons for us on the effects of speech acts by leaders on the public stage. The "I" in Richard's speeches is always new: "Thus play I in one person many people" (5.5.31). Recent theories of pardons and promises made in the public sphere call attention to the layers of voices, heretofore hidden, in the first-person utterances of Richard as he attempts to interrupt the rush of history toward vengeance. Employing speech-act theory, we discover today that Shakespeare lets each utterance create a new voice and history for England. Shakespeare gives Richard time to begin to …

American Verismo?: Insights Into The Padrone, And Opera By George Whitefield Chadwick (13 November 1854 - 4 April 1931), Jon Steffen Truitt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The contribution of George Whitefield Chadwick (13 November 1854 – 4 April 1931) to American music comes in many forms: composer, teacher, conductor, pianist and organist. A leading figure of the Second School of New England composers, Chadwick was also largely responsible for the effective reorganization of the New England Conservatory. He was arguably one of the most influential teachers in American music in the latter half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. This study deals with Chadwick’s last opera intended for professional production, The Padrone. The opera, an American example of Italian verismo, is …

Performing Masculinities: U.S. Representations Of The Male Body In Performance Art Monologues, Darren C. Goins Jan 2004

Performing Masculinities: U.S. Representations Of The Male Body In Performance Art Monologues, Darren C. Goins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I describe and analyze the masculinities constructed in four performance art monologues staged in the US on Broadway. I examined Whoopi Goldberg’s 1984 performance Whoopi Goldberg Live, Lily Tomlin’s 1987 performance in Jane Wagner’s The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Eric Bogosian’s 1990 performance Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, and John Leguizamo’s 1998 performance Freak: A Semi-Demi-Quasi-Pseudo Autobiography. My method of analysis is a critical interpretation incorporating the lenses of Robert Connell and Victor Seidler. It is grounded in a social-cultural perspective using Arthur W. Frank’s “sociology of the body.” By means of …

The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Radio Propaganda In Nazi Germany, 1933-1945, Frank Rybicki Jan 2004

The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Radio Propaganda In Nazi Germany, 1933-1945, Frank Rybicki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intrinsic power and subtle influence of broadcasting is not readily recognized by the average consumer of mass media. This circumstance has an abusive potential for those wishing to use the electronic media for ulterior motives. Such was the case between 1933 and 1945 when the Nazis unleashed their manipulative mass media campaign that helped facilitate totalitarian control over the German people. This dissertation is the study of its radio component. Special emphasis is placed on the origins, construction, and subsequent implementation of Nazi broadcast rhetoric heard on domestic and short wave radio during the twelve-year period of the Third …
