In an era where intercollegiate athletics departments are increasingly reliant on and successful in obtaining charitable donations, three fundamental questions surrounding charitable contributions to educational institutions were empirically examined. Who gives to educational institutions in support of academic and athletics programs? Does the improved performance of athletic teams influence both types of giving to educational institutions? Does increased giving to athletics have a negative impact on charitable giving to educational programs at the same institution? An in-depth analysis of donor behavior at a major public university revealed that contrary to popular assumption, both alumni and non-alumni made gifts to both …

Prompted by the litany of complaints about corporate boards - as once again highlighted by recent corporate scandals - this paper seeks to add to the literature on why corporation laws in the United States (and, indeed, around the world) generally call for corporate governance by or under a board of directors. Moreover, this paper takes a very different approach in searching for an answer. Instead of theorizing, this paper examines historical sources in order to look at how and why an elected board of directors came to be the accepted mode of corporate governance. Musical Play Across Ethnic Boundaries In Western Jamaica, Ronald Eric Dickerson

An ethnography of music, ritual, and festival in western Jamaica, this thesis reports on fieldwork performed in St. Elizabeth and St. James Parishes between June 2002 and January 2003. Featured field sites include rural dancehall events, Kumina performances, Accompong Town's Maroon Heritage Festival, and a Rastafarian music and nutrition festival called "The Supper of Rastafari." Building an account of these and other sites of cultural performance, this study focuses on social connections between groups of participants, traced through poetic, historical, and personal relationships among performers, especially across boundaries of ethnic, stylistic, or religious difference within Jamaica's national cultural identity.

In this thesis history performs that which Della Pollock terms “historicity” in her “Introduction” to Exceptional Spaces: Essays in Performance and History. History as historicity is no longer an evolutionary master narrative that dictates essential Truths. Rather, it is a site for performance where unfinalized and partial fragments of the past cluster into stories that mingle fact and fiction. Historicity defines a space or an event where history is a doing. STADIUM-STYLE MOVIE theaters have revolutionized the movie-going experience. Cushioned rocker seats with high seatbacks that recline, cup holder armrests, ample legroom, and marvelous lines of sight: the simple innovation of putting each row of seats on its own tier has made stadium-style theaters the most comfortable way to view a movie outside of one's own home. American Multi-Cinema Entertainment Inc. ("AMC"), the first group to establish stadium-style seating in its theaters, has described such stadium seating in its publicity materials as "'virtually suspend[ing] the moviegoer in front of [a] wall-to-wall screen.' Looking beyond the actual product, the process of creating a teaching portfolio can have multiple benefits for the preservice teacher. Throughout the process, the individual is able to reflect on their own needs and strengths, offering an opportunity to reflect on one's learning and to articulate who one is as a teacher. It is this personal and individual portrait of one's self as a teaching professional that is a powerful tool of inquiry of the teacher as learner. Breast cancer is the most common of all cancers in women (26%) in Australia (Australian Institute Health Welfare AIHW, 1996; National Breast Cancer Centre NBCC, 1999). It is estimated that the lifetime incidence of one in eleven women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of seventy-four (National Health and Medical Research Council NHMRC, 2000). Surgical resection continues to be the mainstay of treatment for early breast cancer, with approximately 50% of women diagnosed with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy (NBCC, 1999). Both the diagnosis of breast cancer and subsequent mastectomy raises a number of psychosocial issues …

Satirical Legal Studies: From The Legists To The Lizard, Peter Goodrich

In Part I, I expand on the distinction between the Horatian and the Menippean forms of satire and then suggest that a similarly bold division can be used to map satirical legal studies. In support of that argument, I use the example of the earliest surviving satirical legal poem within the Western tradition. My analysis of this exemplary satirical legal artifact delineates four principal modes of legal satire that will organize the ensuing discussion of more contemporary examples of the genre. This article describes how a small liberal arts college library created a digital library using existing staff and financial resources. The Hekman Digital Archive (HDA) was created using a digital media archive module of the library’s ILS, and is maintained by one library staff member with the help of numerous student assistants.

Geographic Relationships Of Pocket Gophers In Southeastern Colorado, David C. Lovell, William R. Whitworth, Jerry R. Choate, Steven J. Bissell, Michael P. Moulton, Justin D. Hoffman

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Distributional patterns of the four species of pocket gophers in southeastern Colorado are variously parapatric, allopatric, or sympatric. More specifically, Geomys bursarius is parapatric with Thomomys talpoides, Thomomys bottae, and Cratogeomys castanops; T. bottae is both sympatric and parapatric with C. castanops; and both C. castanops and T. bottae are allopatric with T. talpoides. Geomys bursarius is restricted to sandy soils and soils of cultivated or otherwise disturbed habitats. Cratogeumys castanops and T. bottae occupy a wide variety of soils but are found most commonly in compacted rangeland soils. Thomomys talpoides is found in well-drained …
