Finding Light In The Darkness? The Historical Treatment Of Genocide As A Template For The Field Of Hate Studies, Raymond C. Sun Jan 2004

Finding Light In The Darkness? The Historical Treatment Of Genocide As A Template For The Field Of Hate Studies, Raymond C. Sun

Journal of Hate Studies

I am discovering that to teach about the history of Nazism, the Holocaust, and genocide is to enter into a profoundly spiritual experience. By this I mean that in engaging with these subjects, students of history must come to terms with some of the most elemental, existential qualities of the human potential for radical destruction and limitless hatred. The topics force us into a direct confrontation with the concept of ultimate evil: its manifold attractions; its power to deceive and destroy both perpetrators and victims; and yet at the same time, appearing in the midst of the reign of death, …

New Frontiers In Collection Development Preparing To Meet New Standards, Gary R. Shook

The Christian Librarian

This article describes the general policies which may be included in a comprehensive collection development policy, attempting to follow national guidelines. It also describes one approach to analyzing how well the library collection supports the various parts of the curriculum, and presents a technique to compare a library collection with peer libraries by subject majors. Finally, the "Collection Development Plan" section provides a format for stating an action plan to develop the collection based upon all of the information gathered.

Beyond The Book: Promoting Effective Research, Jana M. Borchardt Jan 2004

Beyond The Book: Promoting Effective Research, Jana M. Borchardt

The Christian Librarian

In the past library professionals have primarily collected and provided access to materials; however, this paper will argue that we must now go beyond access or "Beyond the Book. " One way to do this is to learn about the information search process and then assume a new and more assertive role as a "research advisor. " We need to change our patrons 'expectations so that they see us as knowledgeable about sources, yes, but also as experts on effective research as a process of discovery. Three relevant information search process models are covered, as well as the way people …

The Role Of Well-Being, Joseph Raz Jan 2004

The Role Of Well-Being, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

"Well-being" signifies the good life, the life which is good for the person whose life it is. I have argued that well-being consists in a wholehearted and successful pursuit of valuable relationships and goals. This view, a little modified, is defended , but the main aim of the article is to consider the role of well-being in practical thought. In particular I will examine a suggestion which says that when we care about people, and when we ought to care about people, what we do, or ought to, care about is their well-being. The suggestion is indifferent to who cares …

Marriage, Cohabitation, And Collective Responsibility For Dependency, Elizabeth S. Scott Jan 2004

Marriage, Cohabitation, And Collective Responsibility For Dependency, Elizabeth S. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

Marriage has fallen on hard times. Although most Americans say that a lasting marriage is an important part of their life plans, the institution no longer enjoys its former exclusive status as the core family form. This is so largely because social norms that regulate family life and women's social roles have changed. A century (or even a couple of generations) ago, marriage was a stable economic and social union that, for the most part, lasted for the joint lives of the spouses. It was the only option for a socially sanctioned intimate relationship and was the setting in which …

The Relationship Among Disclosure, Internalized Homophobia, Religiosity, And Psychological Well-Being In A Lesbian Population, Sharon Lyn Clayman Jan 2004

The Relationship Among Disclosure, Internalized Homophobia, Religiosity, And Psychological Well-Being In A Lesbian Population, Sharon Lyn Clayman

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship among disclosure, internalized homophobia, and religiosity in a lesbian population and how these three variables are related to psychological well-being in order to build upon the scant amount of empirical research on these variables in the lesbian psychological literature. A total of 679 women, 18 to 70 years old, and from all across the country were recruited via the internet to participate in a web-based survey. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Lesbian Internalized Homophobia Scale (Szymanski & Chung, 2001), the Outness Inventory (Mohr & Fassinger, 2000), the Behavioral Self-Disclosure Questionnaire (Carroll & Gilroy, 2000), …

Comparisons Among Parent Reports And Self-Reports Of Sleep In Adhd And Normal School-Aged Children, Diana M. Turner-Eadie Jan 2004

Comparisons Among Parent Reports And Self-Reports Of Sleep In Adhd And Normal School-Aged Children, Diana M. Turner-Eadie

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The objective of the study was to investigate whether school-aged children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience greater sleep disturbance than do normally-developing children. Participants included 33 parents and their children with ADHD (mean age = 10.7 ± 1.7 years) and 33 parents and their children without ADHD (mean age = 10.7 ± 1.6 years). Both parents and their children completed sleep questionnaires developed to assess a number of sleep variables. Based on parental report, the Total Sleep Disturbance score was significantly greater for the ADHD group than for the comparison group. Parents indicated that children with ADHD had …

The Psychological Contract Of Multiple Agency Relationships: Understanding The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Contractors, Cynthia J. Maahs Jan 2004

The Psychological Contract Of Multiple Agency Relationships: Understanding The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Contractors, Cynthia J. Maahs

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Previous research offers inconsistent findings with respect to attitude and behavior differences for contingent and permanent workers. The current study proposes the psychological contract as an explanatory framework for understanding differences between contractors and regular employees. The hypotheses examined attitudinal and behavioral measures: organizational commitment, job satisfaction, intent to quit, job performance, and organizational citizenship behaviors. The two components of the psychological contract (relational vs. transactional) were thought to impact differentially the outcome measures. Approximately 650 employees in a technology contracting organization completed an on-line survey designed to test the hypotheses. The two-factor structure of psychological contract was confirmed and …

Crime, Law, And The Community: Dynamics Of Incarceration In New York City, Jeffrey A. Fagan Jan 2004

Crime, Law, And The Community: Dynamics Of Incarceration In New York City, Jeffrey A. Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Random Family (LeBlanc 2003) tells the story of a tangled family and social network of young people in New York City in which prison threads through their lives since childhood. Early on, we meet a young man named Cesar, who sold small amounts of crack and heroin in the streets near his home in the Bronx. During one of his many spells in jail, Cesar sees his father pushing a cafeteria cart in the Rikers Island Correctional Facility, New York City’s jail. Cesar had not seen his father in many years, but he was not very surprised to see him …

Personal Practical Conflicts, Joseph Raz Jan 2004

Personal Practical Conflicts, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

This preliminary reflection about practical conflicts confronting single agents does little to solve the problems conflicts create. Rather, it attempts to explain what conflicts are and what questions they raise. I suggest that we have two distinct notions of single-agent conflicts reflecting two distinct theoretical questions. The first concerns the possibility of there being a right action in conflict situations. It is the question of whether and, if so, how reasons deriving from different concerns or affecting different people can be of comparable strengths. The second concerns a sense that there is something unfortunate about conflicts and that when facing …

A Structural Equation Model Examining The Effects Of Gulf War Stress Exposure On Subsequent Mental And Physical Health Problems Among Gulf War Veterans, Frank J. Kenny Jan 2004

A Structural Equation Model Examining The Effects Of Gulf War Stress Exposure On Subsequent Mental And Physical Health Problems Among Gulf War Veterans, Frank J. Kenny

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to better understand the complex relationship between the stresses encountered by US. service personnel during the Gulf War and eventual physical and psychological health outcomes among its veterans. By developing and validating a stress model using structural equation modeling techniques, it is hoped that knowledge regarding wartime stress and its potential impact on the health of veterans will be gained. This knowledge can be used to guide future policy decisions on how to minimize the deleterious health consequences associated with deployment and combat, as well as furnishing a basis for future studies that examine …

A Randomised Controlled Trial And Cost Effectiveness Study Of Systematic Screening (Targeted And Total Population Screening) Versus Routine Practice For The Detection Of Atrial Fibrillation In The Over 65s: (Safe) [Isrctn19633732], Dawn Swancutt, Richard Hobbs, David Fitzmaurice, Jonathan Mant, Ellen Murray, Sue Jowett, James Raftery, Stirling Bryan, Michael Davies, Gregory Lip Jan 2004

A Randomised Controlled Trial And Cost Effectiveness Study Of Systematic Screening (Targeted And Total Population Screening) Versus Routine Practice For The Detection Of Atrial Fibrillation In The Over 65s: (Safe) [Isrctn19633732], Dawn Swancutt, Richard Hobbs, David Fitzmaurice, Jonathan Mant, Ellen Murray, Sue Jowett, James Raftery, Stirling Bryan, Michael Davies, Gregory Lip

Peninsula Medical School

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been recognised as an important independent risk factor for thromboembolic disease, particularly stroke for which it provides a five-fold increase in risk. This study aimed to determine the baseline prevalence and the incidence of AF based on a variety of screening strategies and in doing so to evaluate the incremental cost-effectiveness of different screening strategies, including targeted or whole population screening, compared with routine clinical practice, for detection of AF in people aged 65 and over. The value of clinical assessment and echocardiography as additional methods of risk stratification for thromboembolic disease in patients with …

Corporate Constituency Statutes And Employee Governance, Brett Mcdonnell Jan 2004

Corporate Constituency Statutes And Employee Governance, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

The paper compares the effects of corporate constituency statutes versus employee involvement in corporate governance, using a simple model to consider interactions between shareholders, employees, and managers. Both constituency statutes and employee governance tend to lead to a redistribution from shareholders to employees. However, constituency statutes do so at the cost of weakening limits on managerial misbehavior, thereby reducing social welfare. In contrast, employee governance strengthens the limits on managerial misbehavior, and hence is potentially more desirable than constituency statutes.

Moral Judgment Of Law Students Across Three Years: Influences Of Gender, Political Ideology And Interest In Altruistic Law Practice, Maury Landsman, Steven P. Mcneel Jan 2004

Moral Judgment Of Law Students Across Three Years: Influences Of Gender, Political Ideology And Interest In Altruistic Law Practice, Maury Landsman, Steven P. Mcneel

Articles

Jokes and negative stereotypes about lawyers abound, suggesting low levels of honesty and morality. One commentator has suggested a reason for this: The joke rings true to a lot of people because of what many lawyers in this country - including many at the top of the profession - do for their clients: bend, distort, conceal, cover up, obfuscate, or misrepresent the facts, in ways that are simultaneously (1) regarded by ordinary people as just plain dishonest, and (2) defended by many lawyers and legal experts as embodying the finest traditions of the bar and of legal ethics in our …

Remembering The Forgotten Ones: Protecting The Elderly From Financial Abuse Jan 2004

Remembering The Forgotten Ones: Protecting The Elderly From Financial Abuse

San Diego Law Review

There is nothing new about fraudulently taking money from people, particularly the elderly. The elderly population is rapidly increasing, however, and is readily accessible by telephone and mail. As a result, the elderly are easy targets for financial abuse. Such abuse can emanate from several sources, including people the victims know and trust, particularly family and friends.

Perpetrators can be people upon whom the elderly depend for care. Abuse can also come from strangers with whom elderly victims have no direct contact. This Article focuses primarily on the financial abuse of the elderly by strangers.

Can Promise Enforcement Save Affordable Housing In The United States? Jan 2004

Can Promise Enforcement Save Affordable Housing In The United States?

San Diego Law Review

Promise Enforcement is my original approach to the development of affordable housing. Promise Enforcement, as a system, includes three components: (1) contextual thinking; (2) valuing individuality, and (3) comprehensive responsibility. Contextual thinking involves a sense of environmental, historical, and geographic context. Valuing individuality allows residents of public housing to express themselves as unique individuals. Comprehensive responsibility involves a complete understanding of the costs and benefits of affordable housing. The theory was inspired in part by the work of Austrian activist, artist, and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and the writings of French social contract theorist Jean-Jacques Rousseau. My article that introduced the …

Prevalence Of Hepatitis C Virus In Lymphoproliferative Disorders, F. Bilwani, Y. Zaidi, G. N. Kakepoto, Salman Adil, Mohammad Khurshid

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: To study the prevalence of hepatitis C virus in lymphoproliferative disorders.
Methods: A case control prospective study was performed on 143 patients with lymphoproliferative disorders and 29 patients with non-hematological malignancies were taken as controls. All the patients in both groups were analyzed for various risk factors for infection with hepatitis C virus and were tested for the presence of hepatitis C virus antibody (anti HCV), cryoglobulins and rheumatoid factor antibody. Hepatitis C viremia was documented by detection of HCV RNA by polymerase chain reaction.
Results: There was no significant difference for risk factors for hepatitis …
