Distinguishing Hope And Optimism: Two Sides Of A Coin, Or Two Separate Coins?, Fred B. Bryant, Jamie A. Cvengros Jan 2004

Distinguishing Hope And Optimism: Two Sides Of A Coin, Or Two Separate Coins?, Fred B. Bryant, Jamie A. Cvengros

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Structural equation modeling was used to test hypotheses about (a) the dimensionality of measures of dispositional hope (the Adult Hope Scale, AHS) and dispositional optimism (the Life Orientation Test, LOT), (b) the extent and source of conceptual overlap and divergence between hope and optimism, and (c) patterns of discriminant validity for each trait. Separate two-factor models best fit the hope (Agency and Pathways, r = .68) and optimism (Optimism and Pessimism, r = -.63) data. Analyzing the combined AHS and LOT data, a measurement model with separate, correlated second-order factors of Hope and Optimism ( r = .80) provided a …

Use Of Herbal Medications By Patients In A Conventional Health Care Setting: A Health Education Challenge, Jill Delaubenfels Jan 2004

Use Of Herbal Medications By Patients In A Conventional Health Care Setting: A Health Education Challenge, Jill Delaubenfels

Graduate Research Papers

The use of herbal medication is growing rapidly in the United States, but use of herbal medication is not without risk. This is a veritable mine field of health care risks. The federal regulation of herbal medicine as a dietary supplement raises safety and efficacy concerns. The American public lacks knowledge of herbal medicines, often believing that "natural" means "safe". Patients who combine the use of herbal medicine with conventional medicine pose challenges for health care providers. Is the health care provider aware of their patient's use of herbal medication? Is the health care provider adequately educated on the safe …

Deconstructing Teresa O’Brien: A Role Play For Domestic Violence Clinics, Leigh Goodmark, Catherine F. Klein

Scholarly Articles

In this article, we will present and examine the role play that we have used with our students. We will provide the actual text of the role play, with an explanatory narrative about how we integrated the role play into our classroom component. We will outline the reading assignments and pre-class preparation that we require. Finally, we will suggest ways that this role play can be adapted for clinical programs in other jurisdictions or in countries with other legal systems.

Children’S Health And Human Rights, Norie Nogami Jan 2004

Children’S Health And Human Rights, Norie Nogami

Human Rights & Human Welfare

One of the first international attempts to improve the health of children was by Ms.Eglantyne Jebb, a founder of Save the Children, during the aftermath of the WWI. She drafted the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the first international children’s rights document adopted by the League of Nations in 1924. Today, in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) we have a more comprehensive and near universal legal instrument for children’s rights.

Health Care And Professionals, Monica Fish Jan 2004

Health Care And Professionals, Monica Fish

Human Rights & Human Welfare

One of the unfortunate truths of the current human rights regime is that it has given rise to an entirely new aid industry. Fortunate as it is that there are willing individuals eager to share their knowledge and expertise with those in need, the group of professional men and women making up the army of humanitarian workers is, perhaps, overextended and under appreciated. One way of helping the next generation of humanitarians to train and prepare for working within a context of human rights is to provide them with the sound analytical research based on research of current human rights …

Health Of Refugees And Internally Displaced Peoples, Leah Persky, Zaravshon Zukhurova Jan 2004

Health Of Refugees And Internally Displaced Peoples, Leah Persky, Zaravshon Zukhurova

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Refugees and Internally Displaced People’s (IDPs) are extremely vulnerable to human rights abuses, particularly the lack or denial of physical and mental health care. The basic framework of refugee protection has been established and accepted worldwide for more than 50 years. Still, there is still a lack of commitment to respecting the human rights of refugees and providing adequate humanitarian assistance, including health care. Several international conventions and protocols establish the duties of states in terms of treatment of refugees. These include: the Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, the Geneva Conventions, the Statute of the Office of …

Why Teach Environmental Ethics? Because We Already Do, Raymond Benton Jr. Jan 2004

Why Teach Environmental Ethics? Because We Already Do, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this paper we argue for the importance of the formal teaching of environmental ethics. This is, we argue, both because environmental ethics is needed to respond to the environmental issues generated by the neoliberal movement in politics and economics, and because a form of environmental ethics is implicit, but unexamined, in that which is currently taught. We maintain that students need to become aware of the latent ethical dimension in what they are taught. To help them, we think that they need to understand how models and metaphors structure and impact their worldviews. We describe how a simple in-class …

Does Collaboration Matter? A Paradigm For Practical Educational Research, David Philip White Jan 2004

Does Collaboration Matter? A Paradigm For Practical Educational Research, David Philip White

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

What is the virtue in collaboration among practitioners in practical educational research? And if collaboration as elaborated here matters enough for us to care, how will our lives as practitioner-researchers be different? This thesis argues that collaborative research is more than a way of distributing the research burden; it forms a paradigm of practice which requires new modes of conduct andthinking. I illustratethetransformation of my practice from a collaborative methodology to a collaborative ethics, in which changes in status and relationships between participants implied new forms and sources of knowledge. The context of the thesis is a police training college …

Early Intervention For The Management Of Acute Low Back Pain: A Single Blind Randomised Controlled Trial Of Biopsychosocial Education, Manual Therapy And Exercise, Benedict Wand, Christien Bird, James H. Mcauley, Caroline J. Dore, Maureen Macdowell, Lorraine H. De Souza

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Design: A single blind randomised controlled trial comparing two models of care for patients with simple acute low back pain (ALBP).

Objectives: To compare two research-based models of care for ALBP, and investigate the effect of the timing of physical intervention. Summary of Background Data National guidelines offer conflicting information on the delivery of physical treatment in the management of ALBP. Review of guidelines suggests two different models of care. Direct comparisons between these models are lacking in the literature. The present study aims to compare these two approaches to the management of ALBP.

Method: Among 804 referred patients, 102 …

Longitudinal Patterns Of Intimate Partner Violence, Risk, Well-Being, And Employment: Preliminary Findings, Jane C. Murphy, Mary Ann Dutton, Lisa A. Goodman, Dorothy J. Lennig

All Faculty Scholarship

Over 7 months (June 1999 to January 2000), researchers recruited 406 women from 1 of 3 sites in a northeastern city at the point they were seeking help for violence against them by a current or former male partner. Intimate partner violence was measured with a modified version of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale. Some form of serious violence during the previous year was reported by 88 percent of the participants. By the first 3-month follow-up period, nearly one-third of the participants reported the recurrence of some form of physical violence; 20.4 percent reported an injury; and 18.1 percent reported …

Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds Jan 2004

Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The current study is an evaluation of a voluntary sector service, Victim Support. The focal points of this work are the impact of crime upon victims and the extent to which they feel that Victim Support, as a service provider, has helped to restore their sense of equilibrium. In this way the success of a community response to crime is considered. The research was undertaken between 1998 and 2002 and was largely based upon the work of one local scheme; Victim Support, Plymouth. The study included the views of service users (victims of crime) and those of service providers (paid …

The Illustration Of Experience, Richard Jones Jan 2004

The Illustration Of Experience, Richard Jones

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis documents and describes a research project driven by the creative practice of an illustrator. It examines the proposition that the visual mark can act as a register of experience. The research comprises three bodies of work each of which address a specific issue within the broader context of the research proposition. Knowledge gained through practical exploration is discussed in the context of illustration as well as contemporary systems and models of aesthetic representation. Overview Chapter one discusses the origins of this research project and charts the establishment of a methodology. Working under the preliminary title The Illustration of …

Moving Image - Still Life, Kiki Petratou Jan 2004

Moving Image - Still Life, Kiki Petratou

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

MOVEMENT AND TIME "Stasis was defined according to Schrader as the form that links the everyday in something unified and permanent".' Central to my research is the aim to create a still-life image from filmed scenes documenting the everyday actions in my living environment. In some cases however the scenes being staged function as allegories of the states and situations of daily life. I decided to mix staged and 'real' scenes because I did not want to create a documentary about the activities in my environment but to transform everydayness, as I perceive it, into the permanent and unified quality …

The Distribution Of Attitudinal Attachment To The Male Breadwinner Role: A Quantitative Study Of The Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, Suzanne E. Chamberlain Jan 2004

The Distribution Of Attitudinal Attachment To The Male Breadwinner Role: A Quantitative Study Of The Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, Suzanne E. Chamberlain

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is concerned with men's attitudes towards the breadwinner role. A representative sample of 330 men, aged between 17 and 84, and drawn from the Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, participated in the study by completing a postal questionnaire. The aim of the study was to explore attachment to the breadwinner role, and to discover if greater or lesser attachment exists among particular socio-demographic or socio-economic clusters. The quantitative approach and the application of a random sample distinguish this study from those in the literature concerned with 'men and masculinities'. The study applies an empirical perspective to overview the trajectory of …

Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer Jan 2004

Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis investigates the potential of design to intentionally mediate social interaction in ethical (mindful) ways. The subject of the study has evolved from observations and reflections on my own practice. In using the drinking vessel to explore the mediation of human face-to-face interaction through the artefact, the question arose whether some objects can influence interaction more actively than others. In particular, the question was whether and how an artefact can stimulate the user's behaviour by means of its function, and whether this stimulation can cause mindful reflection and interaction. The aim was to understand better the characteristics of this …

Towards A New Theory Of Social Perception: The Effects Of Sex And Sexuality On Rape Attributions, Louise Farbus Jan 2004

Towards A New Theory Of Social Perception: The Effects Of Sex And Sexuality On Rape Attributions, Louise Farbus

School of Psychology Theses

Heterosexual male victims and female perpetrators tend to be omitted from rape perception research as well as legal and everyday notions of rape. Therefore this thesis examined the effects of sex and sexuality on rape attributions. Criticisms of social representations theory provided the rationale for a new theory of social perceptions and for combining methods normally associated with opposing epistemologies and ontological beliefs. A grounded theory derived from ten interviews revealed double standards in the way that men and women are labelled for the same behaviours, whereby female-perpetrated male rape was considered less serious than male-perpetrated rape. Discourse analysis of …

Music That Teaches, Susan L. Carroll Jan 2004

Music That Teaches, Susan L. Carroll

Graduate Research Papers

Not many materials for librarians are available in a participatory form. Most materials are available for presentation. But research has shown that affective learning, which allows students to participate, has had a positive effect on young children learning their basic skills. This research project will be used for participation. The research project used the standards, benchmarks, and objectives found in library curricula for kindergarten through third graders. These standards were the basis of the lyrics to the songs. Music was composed to complement the lyrics and a songbook was designed which included these songs, illustrations, and suggestions for activities to …

Using Young Adult Literature : A Classic Way To Teach English, Matt B. Pries Jan 2004

Using Young Adult Literature : A Classic Way To Teach English, Matt B. Pries

Graduate Research Papers

Students are reading less, and enjoying reading less. Sticking to the same curriculum year after year in the hope that student attitude will suddenly change, that there will be an awakening in the classroom, and students will read the classics with enthusiasm cannot be done. It is a false hope. But there can be an awakening.

Using young adult literature in the high school English classroom is the solution. It will give new hope to teachers that as students come to enjoy reading, they will be more apt to, not only read more, but eventually come to read the classics. …

Constructive Habituation As An Educational Approach To Process-Object Reification In Mathematics, Alonzo F. Peterson Jan 2004

Constructive Habituation As An Educational Approach To Process-Object Reification In Mathematics, Alonzo F. Peterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sfard and Thompson (1994) state that what matters most is that educators develop ways of thinking, teaching, and learning mathematics. This study introduced constructive habituation, a new strategy developed to aid both students and teachers in the thinking, teaching, and learning of mathematics. Constructive habituation attempts to unite constructivist teaching methods aimed at supporting students’ conceptual understanding of content and habituationist teaching method aimed at establishing routine responses to routine tasks. This study is exploratory in nature, designed to investigate if constructive habituation is a more effective means than a traditional teaching method in helping students reach process-object reification as …

The Effects Of Auditory Distraction On Attention Performance In Asymptomatic College Students With A History Of Mild Head Injury, John H.,Ii Denning Jan 2004

The Effects Of Auditory Distraction On Attention Performance In Asymptomatic College Students With A History Of Mild Head Injury, John H.,Ii Denning

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: The majority of individuals experiencing a mild head injury (MHI) recover fully experiencing few residual symptoms. Some individuals who fully recover have shown evidence of residual, albeit subtle, brain functioning disturbances on tasks requiring high levels of cognitive effort. Also, memory complaints in MHI patients may be related to these subtle difficulties when cognitive resources are overwhelmed. This study assessed a group of asymptomatic college students with a history of MHI to determine if there were any residual attention difficulties as well as increased memory complaints. Method: One-hundred twelve college students with and without a history of MHI were …

Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant Jan 2004

Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the therapeutic qualities of selected short stories and novels by contemporary African American woman writer, J. California Cooper. Specifically, I examine the manner in which Cooper's texts can be appreciated as "healing narratives." Healing narratives, as defined in this study, are those texts in which the author consciously creates fictitious representations of reality, while employing the concept of hope as a central and guiding factor. Those aspects of the narrative that have the ability to heal or "lay hands on" a reader vary because the effectiveness of the story depends upon how well the reader can identify …
