Pain-Related Acceptance And Physical Impairment In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Kevin E. Vowles Dec 2004

Pain-Related Acceptance And Physical Impairment In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Kevin E. Vowles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Treatments using acceptance-based approaches have been utilized for a variety of health care concerns with data regarding their application to a chronic pain population recently emerging. These approaches may be particularly suited to chronic pain as they target potentially harmful avoidance and ineffective pain control strategies. Acceptance of chronic pain is related to psychosocial constructs generally (e.g., depression, pain-related anxiety); however, its relation to the overt behavioral variables associated with such states remains unevaluated. The present investigation assessed the specific effects of an acceptance-based versus control-based instructional set on demonstrated physical impairment in 74 individuals with chronic low back pain. …

The Heart Of The Matter : The Gendered Relationship Of Altruism And Marital Happiness., Natalie Jane Brinton Call 1978- Dec 2004

The Heart Of The Matter : The Gendered Relationship Of Altruism And Marital Happiness., Natalie Jane Brinton Call 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of western cultural trends toward individualism, the presence of altruistic marital attitudes and behavior is examined as a predictor of marital happiness. Most quantitative studies exploring correlates of marital happiness use the same underlying concept of asking participants how their spouses' actions help them obtain marital happiness. Specifically, this research departs from convention by using a respondent's own level of altruism to predict his or her own marital happiness. Quantitative data gathered in the Louisville Metropolitan Survey 2004 is used for the project. Several methods of analysis find support for ties between certain manifestations of marital altruism and …

It seeks to determine the interrelationships between conservative Protestant Parent Values (Parent Rural Values and Parent Religiosity), Parent Involvement, and Student Outcomes. For the mixed-methods study, mail-administered Parent and Student Surveys provide quantitative data. Interviews, document analysis, and participant-observer field notes are utilized to supplement statistical findings. Ten Research Questions reflect Demographic Factors (Socioeconomic Status, Family Structure, and Specifically Designed Instruction), Independent Variables (Parent Values--Rural Values and Parent Religiosity), Mediating Factor (Parent Involvement), and the Dependent Variable (Student …

Cases Of University Faculty Conceptions And Practices Of Teaching, Assessment And Action Research., Carol Dianne Raubenheimer 1959- Dec 2004

Cases Of University Faculty Conceptions And Practices Of Teaching, Assessment And Action Research., Carol Dianne Raubenheimer 1959-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conceptions of teaching and learning held by faculty in higher education broadly reflect two dominant approaches, those that are teacher-focused and content oriented, and those that are student-focused and learner oriented (Entwistle, Skinner, Entwistle & Orr, 2000). Conceptions of teaching may be reflected in the pedagogical choices and practices of instructors, but this has not been well established at college level. Thus, an examination of such conceptions may advance the understanding of good teaching at the college level (Fernandez-Balboa & Stiehl, 1995). Using a case study approach this research (a) examined conceptions of teaching and learning, assessment, and action research …

Health Alert: Underreported Medical Errors, Anna H. Gibson Dec 2004

Health Alert: Underreported Medical Errors, Anna H. Gibson

Student Scholarship

Patient medical errors cause thousands of individual injuries and deaths each year. Avoidable medical errors occur every day, thus creating serious concern as to the safety, ethical and legal implications in healthcare delivery. A literature review of scholarly work indicates medical errors are underreported both at the institutional level and on the individual level. This paper attempts to explain why medical errors are underreported. It considers reporting practices from other industries that are applicable to the medical industry, the importance of reporting medical errors along with those incidents that have the potential to improve patient safety and patient quality of …

The Relationship Of Social Interest And Psychopathy, Amy Ann D'Ambrosio

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Measures of psychopathy and the Adlerian construct of social interest have both been found to predict recidivism of convicted offenders. While the two constructs seem to identify related but opposite traits, the relationship between the traits has not been systematically examined. This study examined the relationship between social interest, lll as assessed by the Sulliman Scale of Social Interest (SSSI), and psychopathy, as assessed by the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI) in order to clarify their relationship. It was hypothesized that the two constructs are inversely related. The study was also designed to address the psychometric characteristics of the two scales. …

Distributed Artificial Neural Network (Dann): Model Of Human Memory Behavior, Karen Meriweather

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is believed that a distributed network system will provide a general means of understanding cognitive functions that occur in the brain. This study provides a framework for modeling human memory behavior using a Distributed Artificial Neural Network (DANN) architecture. This approach presents a different method for modeling cognitive functions using peer-to-peer computing. The computers on the network represents different memory stores, and by using Hopfield Neural Network Techniques, along with the software application Joone, the final product is a DANN system that exhibits human memory behavior and the ability to associate input vectors from the Fisher's Iris Classification output …

Antara Menghukum Atau Mempermalukan: Suatu Upaya Memodifikasi Perilaku (Pengalaman 6 Smu Di Depok, Jawa Barat), Adrianus Meliala

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Such dilemma between guilt and shameful has been an interesting topic in the field of social psychology since few times ago. That dilemma persists when discussing social control, self-control, individual moral values, moral standard, cross-cultural influence as well as education-related setting. It is predicted, the one which is more influential, whether guilt aspect or shameful aspect, will one way or another influence the way somebody’s behavior can be modified. This study investigates such tendency which prevails in public schools especially performed by pupils when treating their student’s misconduct. Research question forwarded is whether they exploit punishment or to create shaming …

Reflections On The Development And Implementation Of The Camp Iodiseca Biblical Day Camp, Sara Ann Busch

Honors Program Theses

Majoring in elementary education, I have spent time in classrooms through field experiences, volunteer activities, and tutoring opportunities. I have learned about and seen teachers implement lessons and curriculum, and I even had the opportunity to lead a few of my own lessons. ln classes, I have written collections of lessons that made up thematic units. Y et I never had the opportunity to develop and implement curriculum unit. I did not know if my plans would actually work with a group of students, nor did I know if the students would meet the lesson goals. The purpose of this …

Factors Which Affect The Attitudes Of Teachers Of English Language Learners Enrolled In Mainstream Classrooms, Gail Ingrid Hirschfield Dec 2004

Factors Which Affect The Attitudes Of Teachers Of English Language Learners Enrolled In Mainstream Classrooms, Gail Ingrid Hirschfield

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Increased immigration to the United States over the past fifty years has led to a dramatic increase in enrollment of language minority students in schools throughout the United States. Federal and state laws mandate that public schools accommodate the unique needs of these linguistically and culturally diverse students. English language learners (ELLS) require academic and affective support from their teachers when they are included in mainstream classrooms.

Teachers' attitudes toward their students have been shown to be a predictor of student success. Teachers with positive attitudes are more likely to have received training and are also able to modify their …

Hybrid Or Counterpoise? A Study Of Transitional Trebuchets, Michael J. Basista Dec 2004

Hybrid Or Counterpoise? A Study Of Transitional Trebuchets, Michael J. Basista

Masters Theses

This study investigates the engineering and use of a proposed type of trebuchet in the Middle Ages. A study by a prominent historian has suggested the existence of a type of siege weapon that made use of both human and gravitational forces to fire its projectile. My research will investigate this claim by examining select sources, reviewing the engineering principles involved, and determining the viability of such a machine.

After dealing with this theory I will offer my own new interpretation made from the sources. This interpretation will center on the application of ancient technology to make trebuchets more efficient. …

Evolution Of Cyberspace As A Landscape In Cyberpunk Novels, Heather Holloway Dec 2004

Evolution Of Cyberspace As A Landscape In Cyberpunk Novels, Heather Holloway

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Millions of people enter cyberspace on some level daily. This new technology has infiltrated society rapidly since the first computers were networked. Interestingly, cyberpunk, a sub-genre of science fiction, depicted cyberspace many years before mainstream society had ever conceived of it. This thesis explores the changes in science fictional representations of cyberspace by examining William Gibson's Neuromancer and Neal Stephenson's Snow crash. In this work I contrast the metaphysical, found nature of the first cyberpunk representation of cyberspace with the homogenized, commodified reality of the last cyberpunk representation.

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The authors examined the links between two dimensions that have been useful in understanding cross-cultural differences and similarities, namely, individualism- collectivism (I-C) and value orientations. The authors examined the relations and parallels between the two variables by directly relating them and examining the patterns of relations that both have with a third variable, religiosity. Participants were 475 college students from the Philippines, the United States, and Turkey who responded to measures of horizontal and vertical I-C, value orientations, and religiosity. The authors found partial support for the parallels between I-C and value types, particularly for collectivism and conservative values. Moreover, …

From Inference To Reasoning: The Construction Of Rationality, David Moshman Dec 2004

From Inference To Reasoning: The Construction Of Rationality, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Inference is elementary and ubiquitous: Cognition always goes beyond the data. Thinking—including problem solving, decision making, judgment, planning, and argumentation—is here defined as the deliberate application and coordination of one’s inferences to serve one’s purposes. Reasoning, in turn, is epistemologically self-constrained thinking in which the application and coordination of inferences is guided by a metacognitive commitment to what are deemed to be justifiable inferential norms. The construction of rationality, in this view, involves increasing consciousness and control of logical and other inferences. This metacognitive conception of rationality begins with logic rather than ending with it, and allows for developmental progress …
