Divine Minds: The Cognitive Foundations Of God And Religion, Todd Tremlin
Divine Minds: The Cognitive Foundations Of God And Religion, Todd Tremlin
Dissertations
Understanding how human brains work bears directly on the study of religion. Introducing the new "cognitive science of religion," this dissertation explains how natural mental processes that shape everyday human thought are also responsible for the arising and persistence of religious ideas and for the content and development of religions. The central claim of this work is that understanding the origin and features of god concepts and the religious systems that form around them requires an understanding of the adapted mind. This argument unfolds in two parts. The first explores the cognitive foundations ofsupernatural beings. It discusses in both evolutionary …
Divine Aseity, Divine Freedom : A Conceptual Problem For Edwardsian-Calvinism, James K. Beilby
Divine Aseity, Divine Freedom : A Conceptual Problem For Edwardsian-Calvinism, James K. Beilby
Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Works
The purpose of this paper is to consider whether the Calvinist's typical understanding of why God created the world is consistent with the assertion of God's independence and self-sufficiency—an attribute theologians have labeled "aseity." The essence of the problem is this: the Calvinist's typical assertion that God's fundamental purpose in creation is to demonstrate his glory seems to entail that God have an "other" to whom his glory must be demonstrated. But if this is the case, then God is dependent in some sense on this "other" for the demonstration of his glory and, ironically, less sovereign than in a …

Protection Of Children From Exploitation In West Africa: Illusion Or Reality?, Afua Brown-Eyeson
Protection Of Children From Exploitation In West Africa: Illusion Or Reality?, Afua Brown-Eyeson
LLM Theses and Essays
This thesis analyses the implementation of the main international and regional conventions, which guarantees the protection of children s rights and their effectiveness in combating the issue of child trafficking in West Africa. This paper examines both internal and external child trafficking and some of the causes of this menace. The thesis argues that the international and regional conventions, regardless of their efforts to protect the rights of the children, have failed to achieve their purpose especially in the subregion. In summary, this paper concludes that unless the issue of poverty, which is the underlying factor in the exploitation of …

The Study Of Nontraditional Student Satisfaction With Academic Support Services Offered At Western Michigan University, Natalie Morton
Dissertations
This study examines the impact from the adaptation of lean manufacturing strategies on key external financial performance measures as reported by a number of management accounting methods. The research is not concerned with creating a justification for lean manufacturing strategies but rather it evaluates the inadequacies of standard financial reporting methods to accurately reflect operational improvements possible in the key performance measures through the early stages of a lean program.
ProModel simulation software is used in conjunction with Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic to create a simulated repetitive manufacturing environment and production planning and control system. The study examines the …

Modified Delphi Investigation Of Exercise Science In Physical Education Teacher Education, Sean M. Bulger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As physical education teacher educators experiment with alternative pedagogical approaches to bridge the gap between subdisciplinary theory and professional practice, the need for enhanced multi-disciplinary research and communication continues. The purpose of this study was to determine the critical exercise science competencies, and associated instructional methods, that are recommended for inclusion in the physical education teacher education undergraduate curriculum. An initial list of theoretical and applied exercise science competencies was constructed using the knowledge, skills, and abilities recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine for individuals working in the field of exercise science. The two-round, modified Delphi procedure involved …
Is The International Court Of Justice Biased?, Eric A. Posner, Miguel F. P. De Figueiredo
Is The International Court Of Justice Biased?, Eric A. Posner, Miguel F. P. De Figueiredo
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The International Court of Justice has jurisdiction over disputes between nations, and has decided dozens of cases since it began operations in 1946. Its defenders argue that the ICJ decides cases impartially and confers legitimacy on the international legal system. Its critics argue that the members of the ICJ vote the interests of the states that appoint them. Prior empirical scholarship is ambiguous. We test the charge of bias using statistical methods. We find strong evidence that (1) judges favor the states that appoint them, and (2) judges favor states whose wealth level is close to that of the judges' …
The Decline Of The International Court Of Justice, Eric A. Posner
The Decline Of The International Court Of Justice, Eric A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The International Court of Justice is the judicial organ of the United Nations and the preeminent international court, but its caseload is light and has declined over the long term relative to the number of states. This paper examines evidence of the ICJ’s decline, and analyzes two possible theories for this decline. The first is that states stopped using the ICJ because the judges did not apply the law impartially but favored the interests of their home states. The second is that the ICJ has been the victim of conflicting interests among the states that use and control it.
Using Distributed Network Systems To Model Perception With An Artificial Neural Network, Tide Kansona Takizala
Using Distributed Network Systems To Model Perception With An Artificial Neural Network, Tide Kansona Takizala
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is difficult to be certain about brain functioning. Until now, most efforts to understand brain computations have only been conducted on a stand alone computer. In order to recreate the brain accurately, members of the Institute of Cognitive Computing Technology (ICCT) were interested in finding out whether or not a biological process could be simulated on a Distributed Artificial Neural Network (DANN). The goal of this investigation was to implement visual perception on a network of computers and compare the computations of the network with those of a human brain. The distributed network was developed as a Local Area …

The Clinical Utility Of The Behavior Rating Inventory Of Executive Function (Brief) In The Diagnosis Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Stephen J. Mccandless
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current theories hypothesize that deficits in executive :functioning (EF) are responsible for the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and that specific patterns ofEF deficits may be associated with different subtypes of ADHD. Standard assessment practices for ADHD include behavior rating scales filled out by teachers and parents. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) is a behavior rating scale designed to assess dimensions of executive :functioning. This study evaluated the validity and clinical usefulness of the BRIEF in assessing for ADHD in a • clinic-referred sample of children and adolescents. This study also examined the effectiveness of …

Identity Development And Empathy As Related To Creative Activity Participation, Shana L. Blackshire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The focus of this study was the associations between identity, empathy as an emotional construct, and participation in creatively focused activities among adolescents in a largely rural population. A series of measures to assess identity status, the ego strength of fidelity, empathy, and level of participation in creative activities were administered to 212 male and 320 female adolescents in grades nine through eleven at public high schools in Appalachia. Analyses indicated that while the expected relationship between creative activity participation and identity was not statistically significant, gender may heavily influence that relationship as a mediating variable. Empathy, however, was found …
Factors Underlying Stalking And Harassing Behavior In A College Population, Jill Johansson-Love
Factors Underlying Stalking And Harassing Behavior In A College Population, Jill Johansson-Love
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
At the high end of unwanted pursuit behavior is stalking. This study, using questionnaires, investigated a sample of 48, college females, identified as potential stalkers. Factors examined included: demographic information, social desirability, psychological functioning, attachment, motive, rape myth acceptance, adversarial sexual beliefs, criminal thinking styles, and the actual unwanted pursuit behavior. Hypotheses regarding the criminal thinking styles of the individuals engaging in harassing and stalking behavior were supported at the .05 level. These findings indicate that harassers and stalkers exhibit criminal thinking patterns, such as sacrificing internal control to exert control over the external environment and justifying behavior by externalizing …

No conclusions could be made concerning the efficacy (i.e., inappropriate behavior, class …
Sensitivity To Molar Contingencies Of Food Presentation, Jeffrey Everly
Sensitivity To Molar Contingencies Of Food Presentation, Jeffrey Everly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Twelve rats were exposed to two variable-time schedules that differed in their rates of food delivery. The "imposed" schedule was normally in effect, but lever pressing occasionally switched to the "alternate" schedule for periods averaging 30 s. Increases in food frequency afforded by switching to the alternate schedule were manipulated across conditions. All rats were exposed to the same absolute food frequency increases, but the programming of these increases was varied among the rats by holding particular food delivery rates constant across conditions. For half of the rats, the schedules were signaled. In general, response rates were directly related to …

Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Unified Modeling Language: Delphi Study And Metrics Analyses, J. Erickson, Keng Siau
Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Unified Modeling Language: Delphi Study And Metrics Analyses, J. Erickson, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Systems have become increasingly complex, and as a result development methods have become more complex as well. The unified modeling language (UML) has been criticized for the often cited and sometimes over- whelming complexity it presents to its users, and those seeking to learn to use it. Using Rossi and Brinkkemper’s (1996) complexity metrics, Siau and Cao (2001) completed a complexity analysis of UML and 36 other modeling techniques, finding that UML is indeed more complex than other techniques. Siau, Erickson and Lee (2002) proposed that Rossi and Brinkkemper’s metrics present the theoretical maximum complexity, known as theoretical complexity. This …

The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald
The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article explores the duality of power and powerlessness in Hegel's Subjective Logic, highlighting the tension between the Concept's absolute power and its susceptibility to powerlessness. Hegel portrays the Concept as an infinitely powerful force that unifies diversity through self-related negativity, yet acknowledges that reason can be powerless when fixated on determinate concepts, leading to one-sidedness. This duality suggests that while reason has the capacity for self-correction, it perpetually confronts the challenge of abstraction and determinateness.
The Types Of Universals And The Forms Of Judgment, Richard Dien Winfield
The Types Of Universals And The Forms Of Judgment, Richard Dien Winfield
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article argues that the forms of judgment are central to objective thought and knowledge, critiquing Kant for failing to account for their diversity and proposing a systematic approach to understanding judgment starting from the concept itself. It explores Hegel's differentiation of judgment forms through self-development, emphasizing the necessity of understanding universals and their interrelations.

Childhood Experiences Of Appalachian Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence During Adulthood., Amy L. Reeves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent national surveys in the United States estimate one in five females will experience abuse by an intimate partner during her lifetime. Previous quantitative research linked childhood victimization to repeated victimization in adult relationships. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of childhood in eight female victims of intimate partner violence who were born and reared in southern Appalachia. Interviews were analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative phenomenological method, as described by Van Manen. The three essential themes from childhood were identified as: living 'as if' an orphan; surviving in chaos; and, manifesting a devalued self. These themes were congruent with findings …
