The Impact Of A Social Skills Intervention On The Development Of Resiliency In Preschool Children., Tamala L. Lowther Jan 2004

The Impact Of A Social Skills Intervention On The Development Of Resiliency In Preschool Children., Tamala L. Lowther

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Children need to learn appropriate behavior in their early years. Educators of young children have been given the job of importing very important social competency skills, such as coping, problem solving, cooperation, and self-control skills. Interventions designed to meet the developmental level and individual needs of the children enrolled in a preschool should build factors that will lead to increased social skills and resiliency. This research involved implementing social skill prevention in a preschool classroom in a non-profit childcare center in rural West Virginia. The research examined the effectiveness of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA), in increasing protective factors …

Scenic Design For Steve Martin's "Picasso At The Lapin Agile"., Tuesdee Long Jan 2004

Scenic Design For Steve Martin's "Picasso At The Lapin Agile"., Tuesdee Long

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document is a record of the process involved in creating the scenery for West Virginia University’s 2004 production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile, by Steve Martin. The project was assigned to serve as partial fulfillment of the requirements of a Master of Fine Arts in Design and Theatre Technology, and this document completes the requirements for that degree. This thesis explains the progress of the design from its research and conceptualization to its realization and the resulting theatrical production on the stage. It includes a synopsis, criticism and history of the original production, and a self-evaluation of the …

Watershed-Scale Thermal Regimes And The Distribution Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) And The Smallmouth Bass ( Micropterus Dolomieui) In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Roy Worth Martin Jan 2004

Watershed-Scale Thermal Regimes And The Distribution Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) And The Smallmouth Bass ( Micropterus Dolomieui) In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Roy Worth Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I examined relationships between landscape physiographic factors and summer stream temperatures in the Cheat River watershed, WV and developed statistical models to characterize thermal patterns at the stream segment and watershed scales. I also examined the influence of modeled thermal regimes on the distribution of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in this system. The objectives of this study were to (1) develop and verify an empirical model to predict stream temperature at the stream segment scale in the Cheat River basin, (2) quantify the geography of thermal regimes within the basin at the segment and watershed …

Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar Jan 2004

Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Semiconductor industry accounts for 1.3% - 2% of the total US electricity consumption in the manufacturing sector. Energy in the form of electricity is required to operate the manufacturing process equipment, maintain the clean room conditions, and operate equipment such as Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) units, and Chillers. The process equipment accounts for 40% of the operating costs in a semiconductor fabrication unit [8]. Since a significant amount of energy is used by the manufacturing process, it becomes necessary to determine process parameters which govern energy. A computer based interactive model referred to as Semiconductor Energy Calculation Program …

Influence Of Parenting Factors On Childhood Social Anxiety: Direct Observation Of Parental Warmth And Control., Kristine E. Rork Jan 2004

Influence Of Parenting Factors On Childhood Social Anxiety: Direct Observation Of Parental Warmth And Control., Kristine E. Rork

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the present study was to determine the association of parenting behaviors with the level of social anxiety symptomatology in their children. Three parental factors, including parental socialization, control, and warmth were investigated in a sample of 31 two-parent families. Rather than solely rely upon retrospective questionnaires, this study incorporated direct observation and a Daily Activity Log to more accurately assess the qualities of social interaction. Moderate associations between parental control and child anxious symptomatology were found, with no support for the association between parental warmth and child anxiety. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

The Impact Of Stimulation On Production Decline Type Curves For Cbm Wells., Manuel Arturo Sanchez Jan 2004

The Impact Of Stimulation On Production Decline Type Curves For Cbm Wells., Manuel Arturo Sanchez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coalbed methane (CBM) is considered an unconventional gas resource produced from coal seams usually with low permeability at shallow depths. Analyzing the production performance in CBM reservoirs is challenging, especially at the early stage of the recovery. Most of the small producers in the Appalachian Basin cannot afford personnel or meet economical requirements involved in the use of the numerical simulator to evaluate CBM reservoirs. Production type curve are useful tool for predicting the performance of CBM reservoirs. A set of type curves have been previously developed for unstimulated vertical wells in CBM reservoirs. Most of the CBM wells drilled …

A Parametric Study Of In-Line Filter Holders., Glen A. Wilt Jan 2004

A Parametric Study Of In-Line Filter Holders., Glen A. Wilt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With modern diesel engines producing smaller and lighter particulate mass output, the performance of in-line filtering, used to determine emissions of particulate matter (PM), has become less understood. Several factors including filter characteristics, filter holder geometry, exhaust dilution, filter face temperature, and secondary dilution characteristics need to be investigated. This study investigates factors influenced by filter holder geometry. In the past, many loosely designed filter holders were applied to emissions testing. Recently, 40 CFR Part 1065 recommended a standard filter holder design to be used in all emissions tests. However, it is not known if this design is optimal. To …

Predicting Dynamics Of Aggregate Loafing Behavior In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) At A Washington Colony, Shandelle M. Henson, James L. Hayward, Christina M. Burden, Clara J. Logan, Joseph G. Galusha

Faculty Publications

Seabirds move throughout the day in changing, patchy environments as they engage in various behaviors. We studied the diurnal abundance dynamics of Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) in a habitat patch dedicated to loafing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. We constructed three differential equation models as alternative hypotheses and then used model selection techniques to choose the one that most accurately described the system. We validated the model on an independent data set, made a priori model predictions, and conducted a field test of the predictions. Clear dynamic patterns emerged in the abundance of loafing gulls, even though …
