Does Perceived Parenting Affect Children's Attachment Style In Middle Childhood?, Brooke C. Corby Jan 2004

Does Perceived Parenting Affect Children's Attachment Style In Middle Childhood?, Brooke C. Corby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This longitudinal study examined the likely direction of influence between perceived parenting and attachment style in middle childhood. In each of two successive years, measures of perceived parenting behaviors and of attachment style were administered to 164 children (mean age 10.2 in Year 1). Avoidant (but not preoccupied) attachment predicted change in perceived parenting over time, in that avoidant children perceived their mothers as increasingly overprotective, as less monitoring, as less affectionate, and as providing less reliable support over time. There was little evidence that perceived parenting led to change in attachment style over time, although low perceived maternal support …

Does Leadership Matter? The Effects Of Information Technology Expertise On The Market Value And Performance Of A Firm, Ashraf A. Khallaf Jan 2004

Does Leadership Matter? The Effects Of Information Technology Expertise On The Market Value And Performance Of A Firm, Ashraf A. Khallaf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation examines the stock market reaction to 474 announcements of hiring chief information officers (CIOs) in the 1987--2002 period, and firm performance for periods up to two years following the CIO appointment. The study reports that the announcements are associated with significantly positive abnormal returns (0.48 percent). The returns are more pronounced when the new CIO is hired from an IT leader firm (1.94 percent). Abnormal returns are significantly positive related with the CIO's level of education and high-technology firms, and negatively related with firm size. In addition, there is no significant difference in market reaction between the announcements …

Efficient Implementation Of Zero-Knowledge Based Identification Protocols, Michelle Elizabeth Barella Jan 2004

Efficient Implementation Of Zero-Knowledge Based Identification Protocols, Michelle Elizabeth Barella

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A zero knowledge identification protocol is an interactive proof system that allows a person to prove that he knows a secret key associated with his identity without revealing the secret key. This type of protocol is the topic of a fairy tale, by Gustavus Simmons called the King's Dilemma, about a king and the problem he has with thieves impersonating his tax collectors. It describes a zero-knowledge identification protocol that will rid the king of his problem. I present this system, the motivation for this thesis, and the transformations from this protocol, that uses lead weights and containers, to protocols …

Dwellings And Beings, Spaces And Places: A Topoanalysis Of Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita", Sally M. Badawi Jan 2004

Dwellings And Beings, Spaces And Places: A Topoanalysis Of Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita", Sally M. Badawi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis conducts a toponalysis of phenomenological notions of "Being" and "dwelling" in Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita and concludes that the existence of the characters rests in their relationships to dwelling and the ramifications of their separation from home. As Humbert and Lolita experience alienation and uprooted-ness, they embark upon a two-year journey which orbits around reality, as their travels follow what David Seamon calls, Journey-Dwelling Spiral, however, without ever attaining a state of dwelling. As they attempt to overcome their disorientation, Lolita distances herself from Humbert, and Humbert projects his nympholepsy onto another, Quilty. Because Lolita succeeds in her goal, …

Dynamic Stability Of Fluid-Conveying Pipes On Uniform Or Non-Uniform Elastic Foundations, Pablo J. Vittori Jan 2004

Dynamic Stability Of Fluid-Conveying Pipes On Uniform Or Non-Uniform Elastic Foundations, Pablo J. Vittori

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The dynamic behavior of straight cantilever pipes conveying fluid is studied, establishing the conditions of stability for systems, which are only limited to move in a 2D-plane. Internal friction of pipe and the effect of the surrounding fluid are neglected. A universal stability curve showing boundary between the stable and unstable behaviors is constructed by finding solution to equation of motion by exact and high-dimensional approximate methods. Based on the Boobnov-Galerkin method, the critical velocities for the fluid are obtained by using both the eigenfunctions of a cantilever beam (beam functions), as well as the utilization of Duncan's functions. Stability …

Emotion, Language, And Heroism In C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, Heather Marie Leger Jan 2004

Emotion, Language, And Heroism In C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, Heather Marie Leger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy presents a hero in the person of philologist Dr. Elwin Ransom. Lewis's presentation exhibits a purposeful and precise use of language that describes experience and characterizes emotional authenticity. This use of language becomes particularly interesting when examined in light of the theories of Owen Barfield, who along with Lewis recognizes that myth is significant as an expression of language and its relation to the human condition, and Joseph Campbell, who discusses the journey of the hero. In his own writings Lewis contends that there has been a process of working against the "mythical imagination," moving …

Efficient Localized Broadcast Algorithms In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Wei. Lou Jan 2004

Efficient Localized Broadcast Algorithms In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Wei. Lou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The broadcast operation has a most fundamental role in mobile ad hoc networks because of the broadcasting nature of radio transmission, i.e., when a sender transmits a packet, all nodes within the sender's transmission range will be affected by this transmission. The benefit of this property is that one packet can be received by all neighbors while the negative effect is that it interferes with other transmissions. Flooding ensures that the entire network receives the packet but generates many redundant transmissions which may trigger a serious broadcast storm problem that may collapse the entire network. The broadcast storm problem can …

Effects Of Joint Book Reading Emphasizing Print Focus On Print Awareness In Preschool Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Investigation, Barbara J. Fries Jan 2004

Effects Of Joint Book Reading Emphasizing Print Focus On Print Awareness In Preschool Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Investigation, Barbara J. Fries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Most typically developing children experience a wide variety of literary experiences before they ever learn to read. Young children with intellectual impairments may not be as fortunate due to multiple developmental delays and therapeutic needs. Research has supported joint book reading as an effective intervention technique for children with language impairments and other risks for developmental delays. Two research questions were explored in this preliminary investigation. First, to what extent does a specific joint book reading training program, emphasizing a print focus, increase verbal and nonverbal print referencing behaviors in parents during joint book reading? Secondly, to what extent does …

Environment's Influence On The Protagonists In Richard Wright's Fiction, Erin. Riley Jan 2004

Environment's Influence On The Protagonists In Richard Wright's Fiction, Erin. Riley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The protagonists in Richard Wright's fiction often face insurmountable obstacles. The environment plays an important role in the actions of the protagonist. Although Wright's fictional settings were often centered in the United States, the specific U.S. location was often integral to the resolution of the story. The protagonists are exposed to similar situations, but depending upon the northern American or southern American environments, they may encounter vastly different outcomes. Neither environment proves itself to be beneficial to Wright's protagonists. The racism in both northern and southern environments is the defining factor in the development of the protagonists. There are differences …

Evaluation Of The Microbiological Quality Of Sandy Beaches: A Novel Approach, Renuka Lisa Mohammed Jan 2004

Evaluation Of The Microbiological Quality Of Sandy Beaches: A Novel Approach, Renuka Lisa Mohammed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A novel, 'near-real' time technique; peptide nucleic acid chemilumiscent in situ hybridization (PNA CISH), was developed and validated for detecting, enumerating and identifying potential indicators (Staphyloccus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) of beach quality. To understand the dynamics of bacterial indicators a plethora of physical, chemical and biological parameters were tested under field and lab conditions. Escherichia coli tagged with green fluorescence protein (GFP) was used to assess the impact of wave energy and rainfall on seawater counts. PNA CISH and plate counts correlated strongly (r = 0.94 to r = 0.86). Temperature, salinity, nutrient availability and predation significantly influenced the …

Essays On High-Tech Acquisitions And Divestitures, Georgia. Benou Jan 2004

Essays On High-Tech Acquisitions And Divestitures, Georgia. Benou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Since the early 1990s there has been a substantial increase both in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as well as in divestitures of high-tech companies. This dissertation examines the takeover and divestiture activity in high-tech markets in an effort to extend our current knowledge regarding high-tech companies. In that context, various firm characteristics and their relation to firm performance are investigated. Furthermore, an attempt is made to examine the role of investment banks and their impact---if any---on shareholder wealth. This study finds that for domestic high-tech acquisitions, the higher the level of the target's R&D expenditures, the lower the bidder's announcement …

Finite Element Modeling For Dislocation Generation In Semiconductor Crystals Grown From The Melt, Xinai. Zhu Jan 2004

Finite Element Modeling For Dislocation Generation In Semiconductor Crystals Grown From The Melt, Xinai. Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Dislocations in Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Indium Phosphide (InP) single crystals are generated by excessive stresses that are induced during the crystal growth process, and the fabrication and packaging of microelectronic devices/circuits. The presence of dislocations has adverse effects on the performance, lifetime and reliability of the GaAs and InP-based devices/circuits. It is well known that dislocation density can be significantly reduced by doping impurity atoms into the GaAs and InP crystal and/or decreasing the thermal stresses in these crystals during their growth process. In order to reduce the dislocation density generated in the GaAs and InP crystals, the influence …

This study explored the question, "What is the experience of being a leader during participation in a ropes course program and at work?" The ropes course as a training medium provides opportunities for people to engage in challenging activities to improve interpersonal skills. From ten ropes course programs and 130 participants, the researcher purposefully selected thirteen co-researchers who exhibited pre-determined leadership behaviors. Dialogue with each co-researcher provided rich descriptions and metaphors about the experience of being a leader. Using heuristic research methods, the researcher analyzed the data and uncovered redundant themes to better understand the phenomenon of being a leader. …

Father, The Son And The Sense Of Humor: The Novels Of John Fante, Emanuele. Pettener Jan 2004

Father, The Son And The Sense Of Humor: The Novels Of John Fante, Emanuele. Pettener

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

John Fante is a well-known novelist in Italy and Europe, but still very much unknown and unrecognized in the United States. Yet, John Fante is an American writer and, though his father came from Torricella Peligna---a small town in the middle of Italy---Fante did not speak Italian; he felt American and, most of all, he wanted to be considered an American writer. His novels are imbued with both "Italian Americanicity" as well as "Americanicity". In fact, throughout his eight novels, one of the main topics is the American motif par excellence, the American Dream. What are the reasons for such …

Idee De L'Amour Dans Le Couple Chez Beauvoir, Marie-Pierre. Grosjean Jan 2004

Idee De L'Amour Dans Le Couple Chez Beauvoir, Marie-Pierre. Grosjean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

One of the constants in Beauvoir's work is her lifelong attention to the phenomenon of love and the idea of the couple. In her philosophy as well as in her fiction, she develops a binary concept of love. On the one hand is "authentic love," connoting respect and reciprocity; on the other is "inauthentic love," a function of conquest and annexation. Because of her adherence to the tenets of Existentialism, Beauvoir, the feminist, skillfully negotiates between the notions of love and freedom.

Great Mind Is Androgynous: A Look At The Late Poetry Of Sylvia Plath Through Virginia Woolf's Theory Of The Androgynous Consciousness, Shilo R. Blackburn Jan 2004

Great Mind Is Androgynous: A Look At The Late Poetry Of Sylvia Plath Through Virginia Woolf's Theory Of The Androgynous Consciousness, Shilo R. Blackburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The female subject in the late poetry of Sylvia Plath experiences a physical and intellectual transformation, as Plath attempts to challenge and redefine the social construction of woman through Virginia Woolf's influence. Plath aspires to achieve a poetic voice that embodies characteristics of both genders simultaneously, an androgynous consciousness by Woolf's account, and one that can speak despite Western culture's imposed inferiority of women writers. Since traditionally masculine language has defined women's social roles through their physical bodies, Plath's aim is to immerse her female subject in the experiences of her corporeal body as a means to transcend her physical …

Home Range And Movements Of Juvenile Atlantic Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas L.) On Shallow Reef Habitats In Palm Beach, Florida, United States Of America, Christopher Makowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study's objectives were to determine if coastal (shallow-water, oceanic reef) aggregations of juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas L.) in Palm Beach, Florida occupied distinct home ranges and how these home ranges compared in size and resource availability with those studied elsewhere. Six immature green turtles were captured, measured, and subjected to esophageal lavage to determine diet. Each turtle was returned to its initial capture site within 24 h with an ultrasonic transmitter used to track movements. All turtles were <65 cm SCL, had ingested similar macroalgae, and occupied markedly small home ranges (mean = 2.38 +/- 1.78 km 2), largely restricted to the reef itself. Diving and feeding activity peaked during the day; at night, activity was minimal. The food and sleeping site resource distribution at this specific location coincides with the turtles' home range size and shape, with considerable overlap of core areas.

Ideological Complexity Of Kipling, Jonathan D. Noble Jan 2004

Ideological Complexity Of Kipling, Jonathan D. Noble

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The works of Kipling are generally read under the discursive ideology of Orientalism. According to Edward Said, Orientalism is an institution for dominating the Orient with Foucauldian power/knowledge. While much of Kipling's work falls easily within the lines of Orientalism, important exceptions disrupt this singular reading. The hybrid character Kim, for example, demonstrates an uncertainty concerning the identity of the Anglo-Indian as colonizer constructed along racial lines, where white Anglo-Indian represents colonizer and brown Indian represents colonized. This simplified racial division is further problematized by Kipling's attention to social class in other works of prose and verse, which place the …

Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of A Phase Approach To Nutrition Counseling Using The Transtheoretical And Brief Intervention Models, Kaye-Ann. Grant Jan 2004

Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of A Phase Approach To Nutrition Counseling Using The Transtheoretical And Brief Intervention Models, Kaye-Ann. Grant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Registered dietitians, while knowledgeable in food and nutrition, are also intrinsically educators, a role that is now receiving in-depth exploration. As nutrition educators or counselors, dietitians have been stereotyped as food cops (Licavoli, 1995, p. 751); that is, individuals who provide the dos and don'ts list. Research in the area of nutrition education may foster movement away from this stereotype. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of traditional nutrition counseling with stage-matched nutrition counseling by registered dietitians using clients in acute care settings while measuring behavioral and cognitive change outcomes. An experimental design using randomly assigned …

Influence Of Depth-Dependent Sediment Properties On The Pressure Reflection Coefficient At Normal Incidence Using The Biot-Stoll Model, Marianne. Joussein Jan 2004

Influence Of Depth-Dependent Sediment Properties On The Pressure Reflection Coefficient At Normal Incidence Using The Biot-Stoll Model, Marianne. Joussein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The impact of depth-dependent geophysical parameters on the acoustic pressure reflection coefficient is studied at normal incidence using the Biot-Stoll theory in porous marine sediments. The seabed is modeled as a sediment layer with depth-dependent properties on top of a homogeneous half-space, as originally proposed by Stern. There is no discontinuity in sediment properties between the layer and the half-space. The reflection coefficient is determined by the evaluation of boundary conditions at the water-sediment layer interface and the sediment layer-half-space interface. Results are obtained for different types of sediment, from medium size sands to silty clay, and different porosity profiles …

Langston Hughes's Jesse B. Semple Commentaries: A Nietzschean Reading, Tina. Angelone Jan 2004

Langston Hughes's Jesse B. Semple Commentaries: A Nietzschean Reading, Tina. Angelone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Friedrich Nietzsche's notion of the Apollonian/Dionysian opposition found in The Birth of Tragedy provides a means to analyze Langston Hughes's Jesse B. Semple commentaries. The language and archetypal characters found in the Semple commentaries demonstrates the shifting balance between the struggles and the triumphs of some American Negroes. This shifting balance is represented by the Dionysian and Apollonian traits of Simple and the narrator, Boyd. By creating these characters, Hughes is able to display the importance of the low-down culture for some black artists. Through the intoxicated Dionysian insight of Semple and the Apollonian logos of the narrator, Hughes demonstrates …

"And Yet God Has Not Said A Word!": Robert Browning And The Romantic Killer In Literature, Erin. Burns-Davies Jan 2004

"And Yet God Has Not Said A Word!": Robert Browning And The Romantic Killer In Literature, Erin. Burns-Davies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Robert Browning's dramatic monologues often characterize the darker aspect of romantic love through speakers who demonstrate their devotion to violence. Exploring the innovations in discourse, Browning gives his narrators voices that allow them to speak from an ancient literary tradition. For Browning's speakers, words make the silencing of the lover either the act of ultimate devotion or the result of disappointed expectations. The narrator speaks of the absence of God, as when Porphyria's lover holds her body to him: "and yet God has not said a word!" With the poet's strong speech---in all his attractiveness, his destructive display of love …
