The Proceedings Of The European Ombudsman, Simone Cadeddu Dec 2004

The Proceedings Of The European Ombudsman, Simone Cadeddu

Law and Contemporary Problems

Given the severe institutional shortcomings of the European Ombudsman and the poor understanding of his duties among European citizens, the Ombudsman's information strategy does not appear to have been very effective so far. With dedication and activism, the Ombudsman continues to travel tirelessly year after year, participating in conferences, seminars, meetings, and visits with officials of Community and national institutions in all of the 25 Member States.

An Analytical Framework For Science Parks And Technology Districts With An Application To Singapore, Cher Chiew Francis Koh, Teow Hock Winston Koh, Feichin Ted Tschang Dec 2004

An Analytical Framework For Science Parks And Technology Districts With An Application To Singapore, Cher Chiew Francis Koh, Teow Hock Winston Koh, Feichin Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper analyzes the question: what does it take for science parks and technology districts to evolve and grow? We propose an analytical framework to examine the gestation, evolution and sustainability of science parks and regional phenomena at a broader scale such as technology districts. The framework comprises three aspects of a science park's development: growth mechanisms, level of technological capabilities, and integration with national or global markets. The main growth mechanisms we identify are government-led infrastructure provision, agglomeration effects and continual self-renewal through the creation of new businesses. We apply this framework to analyze Singapore's science park strategy and …

On Measuring Influence In Non-Binary Voting Games, Vincent Chua, C. H. Ueng Dec 2004

On Measuring Influence In Non-Binary Voting Games, Vincent Chua, C. H. Ueng

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this note, we demonstrate using two simple examples that generalization of the Banzhaf measure of voter influence to non-binary voting games that requires as starting position a voter’s membership in a winning coalition is likely to incompletely reflect the influence a voter has on the outcome of a game. Generalization of the Banzhaf measure that takes into consideration all possible pivot moves of a voter including those moves originating from a losing coalition will, on the other hand, result in a measure that is proportional to the Penrose measure only in the ternary case.

The Glacial Geology Of Southern St. Joseph County, Michigan, Linda Nicks Dec 2004

The Glacial Geology Of Southern St. Joseph County, Michigan, Linda Nicks

Dissertations

The objective of the dissertation was to map the glacial geology in southern St. Joseph County, Michigan. The surficial geology was divided into three distinct land systems which are moraine, outwash and fan deposits. The Sturgis Moraine is the most prominent feature transecting the study area from east to west. The topography is further dissected by southwest-trending channels interpreted as tunnel channels.

Thick accumulations of sand and gravel in the study area indicate that glacial meltwater deposition played a dominant role in shaping the landscape. Based on the relative size of the channels and outwash deposits, the largest contribution from …

Political Dynamics Within The Balkans: The Cases Of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, And Montenegro, Lisen Bashkurti Dec 2004

Political Dynamics Within The Balkans: The Cases Of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, And Montenegro, Lisen Bashkurti

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The Essay intends to analyze the regional and local political dynamics within the Balkans and focuses on the most problematic and disputable areas after the Cold War. Through analyses of individual states, bilateral relations, and regional relations, the author gives a broad and complex view of the current and future reconfiguration of the Balkans. Individual cases with contradictory political trends, interstate problems with reciprocal implications, regional "domino effects" of overall solutions, and local and international engagements to support the process in accordance with the modern trend of democratization and integration of the Balkans are included in the Essay's laboratory of …

Reactivity To Conspicuousness And Alcohol Use Among College Students: The Moderating Effect Of Alcohol Expectancies, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak Dec 2004

Reactivity To Conspicuousness And Alcohol Use Among College Students: The Moderating Effect Of Alcohol Expectancies, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The analysis of self-report data from 147 college undergraduates suggested that alcohol expectancies moderate the effect of a dispositional susceptibility to embarrassment elicited by undesired conspicuousness [center-of-attention-induced embarrassability (CAE)] on drinking behavior. Individuals unlikely to experience embarrassment when they engage in behaviors that make them stand out in a crowd, a common occurrence when one drinks to excess, drank heavily if they expected alcohol to make them more assertive socially. Students with similar beliefs about the effects of alcohol on social interaction who were high in CAE consumed substantially less alcohol than the latter individuals. Their overall levels of drinking …

Child-Centered Kinder Training For Teachers Of Pre-School Children Deemed: At-Risk, Phyllis Post, Angela Sheely-Moore, Melissa Mcallister, Barbara Hess, Claudia Flowers Dec 2004

Child-Centered Kinder Training For Teachers Of Pre-School Children Deemed: At-Risk, Phyllis Post, Angela Sheely-Moore, Melissa Mcallister, Barbara Hess, Claudia Flowers

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of child-centered kinder training on both at-risk children and their teachers using Landreth's 10-week filial training model. In this project, the teachers received 30 minutes of immediate feedback following their play sessions with individual children. Following the 10-week training, teachers participated in 13 group sessions to help them generalize the use of the skills into their classrooms. The findings indicate that changes occurred in both the children and the teachers. The children who participated in play sessions with their teachers improved in three of the four composite scales of the …
