A Biomechanical Analysis Of Sprinters Vs. Distance Runners At Equal And Maximal Speeds, Tyler D. Bushnell Dec 2004

A Biomechanical Analysis Of Sprinters Vs. Distance Runners At Equal And Maximal Speeds, Tyler D. Bushnell

Theses and Dissertations

In the sport of track and field, sprinting and distance running represent two major categories of athletes. Sprinting is associated with power and speed, whereas distance running focuses on the economy of movement. With distance running there are elements of sprint technique that overlap. With distance events, there comes a time near the end of the race where economy gives way to speed. If the distance runners knew how to alter their technique in a way to become more sprint-like, this process could possibly be more successful. PURPOSE: This study compared the differences in technique between sprinters and distance runners …

The Image Of The Waterfront In Rio De Janeiro: Urbanism And Social Representation Of Reality, Nara Iwata, Vicente Del Rio Dec 2004

The Image Of The Waterfront In Rio De Janeiro: Urbanism And Social Representation Of Reality, Nara Iwata, Vicente Del Rio

City and Regional Planning

Postmodernity and economic globalization incite countries, regions, and cities to compete for investments, consumers, and resources. In aspiring for a new position in this global market, cities utilize new urban practices that lead them to rediscover and reinvent identities and traditions. In Rio de Janeiro, the mythical dimension of the South Zone is inseparably incorporated to its identity. In evaluating the history of the imagery linked to the beaches and the projects for the waterfront, one may observe a social construction of a reality that is marked by a continuous redesigning of symbols but also by a discontinuity in the …

Efficiency And Productivity Analyses Of Indonesian Manufacturing Industries, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma Dec 2004

Efficiency And Productivity Analyses Of Indonesian Manufacturing Industries, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma

Economics Discussion Papers

This study estimates the technical efficiencies and total factor productivity (TFP) growth in food, textile, chemical and metal products industries during 1993 to 2000 in Indonesia by using the stochastic frontier model. Furthermore, the determinants of inefficiency are also analyzed and the TFP growth is decomposed into technological progress, scale component, and efficiency growth. The results reveal that the food, textile, chemical and metal products sectors are on average 50.79%, 47.89%, 68.65% and 68.91% technically efficient respectively. It is noted that ownership contributed to technical inefficiency in the food sector; location and size contributed to technical inefficiency in the textile …

Cost Efficiency, Economies Of Scale, Technological Progress And Productivity In Indonesian Banks, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma Dec 2004

Cost Efficiency, Economies Of Scale, Technological Progress And Productivity In Indonesian Banks, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma

Economics Discussion Papers

This study estimates cost efficiency, scale economies, technological progress and productivity growth for Indonesian banks over the period 1993-2000. Overall the cost efficiency of all banks during this period was 69.82%. However, on average the efficiency of banks prior to the Asian crisis and after the Asian crisis were 79.67% and 53.40% respectively. Moreover, the results also indicate that private-owned banks and joint venture/foreign banks were more efficient than public-owned banks. Furthermore, as expected large banks tend to be more efficient as compared to smaller banks. Total factor productivity growth for Indonesian banks over the period 1993-2000 was -3.14%. However, …

Technical Efficiency And Productivity Analysis In Indonesian Provincial Economies, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma Dec 2004

Technical Efficiency And Productivity Analysis In Indonesian Provincial Economies, Heru Margono, Subhash C. Sharma

Economics Discussion Papers

By using the stochastic frontier methodology, this study investigates the technical efficiency and total factor productivity (TFP) growth in Indonesian provincial economies during the period from 1993 to 2000. In addition to the estimation of provincial technical efficiency, factors that contribute to technical inefficiency are also examined and the TFP growth is decomposed into technological progress, the scale component and the change in technical efficiency. The results reveal that average technical efficiency is only around 50%. Our results reveal that the mean years of schooling and sectoral differences affected technical efficiency. The TFP grew, on average, in the range from …

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong Dec 2004

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper argues that Foucault’s proposed positive program of practical critique in his later work, which he calls ‘critical ontology,’ provides a response to his critics. The goal of critical ontology is to “separate out, from the contingency that has made us what we are, the possibility of no longer being, doing or thinking what we are, do, or think.” However, it may be objected that, since Foucault emphasizes going beyond contingencies, it appears that he is guilty of committing a kind of genetic fallacy. I will defend Foucault against such a charge by using concepts and practices in child …

Spectral Degree Of Coherence Of A Random Three-Dimensional Electromagnetic Field, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf Dec 2004

Spectral Degree Of Coherence Of A Random Three-Dimensional Electromagnetic Field, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf

Physics Articles and Papers

The complex spectral degree of coherence of a general random, statistically stationary electromagnetic field is introduced in a manner similar to the way it is defined for a beamlike field, namely, by means of Young’s interference experiment. Both its modulus and its phase are measurable. We illustrate the definition by applying it to blackbody radiation emerging from a cavity. The results are of particular interest for near-field optics.

What Does Height Really Mean? Part I: Introduction, Thomas H. Meyer, Daniel R. Roman, David B. Zilkoski Dec 2004

What Does Height Really Mean? Part I: Introduction, Thomas H. Meyer, Daniel R. Roman, David B. Zilkoski

Thomas H. Meyer's Peer-reviewed Articles

This is the first paper in a four-part series considering the fundamental question, “what does the word height really mean?” National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is embarking on a height modernization program in which, in the future, it will not be necessary for NGS to create new or maintain old orthometric height benchmarks. In their stead, NGS will publish measured ellipsoid heights and computed Helmert orthometric heights for survey markers. Consequently, practicing surveyors will soon be confronted with coping with these changes and the differences between these types of height. Indeed, although “height’” is a commonly used word, an exact definition …

The Scarcity Of Women As Certified Public Accountants (Cpas), Precious Williams

McCabe Thesis Collection

By researching different sources regarding the accounting profession, the research will give readers an in depth understanding of the shortage of women as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). Some examples of jobs in the accounting profession are accounting professors, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), Certified Managerial Accountants (CMA's) and business accountants. It takes plenty of time and determination to become a CPA and a CMA. Many women are apprehensive of the challenges involved in becoming an accountant. Women who have persevered can obtain a career in the accounting profession. This thesis is based on materials that show women as CPAs. It also …

The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig Dec 2004

The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig

Political Science Research

A literature has emerged in American voting studies noting a “marriage gap”—the propensity for married voters to support the Republican party. Using Canadian Election Study data, we establish the existence of a significant marriage gap in Canada. We also seek to determine if the marriage gap is driven by socio-demographic factors or attitudinal ones. We find that while socio-demographic factors contribute to the marriage gap, they explain relatively little variance. In probing the attitudinal basis of the marriage gap further, we find that married Canadians differ from the unwed very strongly on issues of moral traditionalism, but much less so …

Integrating Hiv Prevention Services Into The Clinical Care Setting In Medicaid And Ryan White Care Act Programs: Legal, Financial, And Organizational Issues, John Palen, Jeffrey Levi, Sara E. Wilensky, Jennifer Kates Dec 2004

Integrating Hiv Prevention Services Into The Clinical Care Setting In Medicaid And Ryan White Care Act Programs: Legal, Financial, And Organizational Issues, John Palen, Jeffrey Levi, Sara E. Wilensky, Jennifer Kates

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This policy brief examines the structural-level opportunities and challenges associated with the delivery of HIV prevention services in or closely linked to the clinical care setting. It focuses on two of the major public programs for HIV care in the U.S: Medicaid, the nation's major public health program for low-income Americans, and the largest source of public financing for HIV/AIDS care in the U.S.; and the Ryan White CARE Act, the nation's only HIV-specific care and support services grant program which operates as the payer of last resort at the state and local level. Together, these programs provide care and …
