Femtosecond Laser-Induced Formation Of Submicrometer Spikes On Silicon In Water, M. Y. Shen, Catherine Hirshfeld Crouch, J. E. Carey, E. Mazur

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We fabricate submicrometer silicon spikes by irradiating a siliconsurface that is submerged in water with 400 nm, 100 fs laser pulses. These spikes are less than a micrometer tall and about 200 nm wide—one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the microspikes formed by laser irradiation of silicon in gases or vacuum. Scanning electron micrographs of the surface show that the formation of the spikes involves a combination of capillary waves on the molten siliconsurface and laser-induced etching of silicon. Chemical analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the spikes show that they are composed of silicon with a 20-nm-thick …

Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman Dec 2004

Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

JPie is a visual programming environment supporting live construction of Java applications. Class modifications, such as declaring instance variables and overriding methods, take effect immediately on existing instances of the class to encourage experimentation in an educational setting. Because programs are edited live, editing gestures must transform the program from one well-formed state to another, without intermediate ambiguous states. To accomplish this, JPie’s visual representation provides capsules, which represent logical code units, and semantic regions, which represent different aspects of a program. A capsule’s meaning depends upon its containing semantic region. Similarly, a gesture, which involves manipulation of a capsule, …

Damage Reduction Estimates And Benefit-Cost Ratios For Feral Swine Control From The Last Remnant Of A Basin Marsh System In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Henry T. Smith, Robert Severson, Mary Ann Severson, John Woolard, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Daniel Griffin Dec 2004

Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Daniel Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The introduction of swine (Sus scrofa) has adversely affected the environment of many natural habitats throughout the world. Basin marshes are dwindling ecosystems in Florida that are especially vulnerable to damage by feral swine. In January 2003, the estimated amount of swine damage to the exposed portion of the last remnant of a basin marsh system in Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP) was 19% (an area of 5 ha). Economic valuations for the swine damage were based on the monetary amounts that wetland regulators have allowed permit applicants to spend in mitigation attempts to replace lost wetland resources. …

Link Buffer Sizing: A New Look At The Old Problem, Sergey Gorinsky, Anshul Kantawala, Jonathan Turner Dec 2004

Link Buffer Sizing: A New Look At The Old Problem, Sergey Gorinsky, Anshul Kantawala, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this paper, we revisit the question of how much buffer an IP router should allocate for its output link. For a long time, the intuitive answer of setting the buffer size to the bitrate-delay product has been widely regarded as reasonable. Recent studies of interaction between queueing at IP routers and TCP congestion control proposed alternative answers. First, we expose and explain contradictions between existing guidelines for link buffer sizing. Then, we argue that the problem of link buffer sizing needs a different formulation. In particular, the chosen buffer size should accommodate not only common versions of TCP but …

Brief Of Keith N. Hylton As Amicus Curiae In Support Of Petitioners In Greg Johnson, Et Al. V. Ford Motor Company, Keith N. Hylton

This Court last addressed the legal framework for setting the amount of punitive damages in Adams v. Murakami (1991) 54 Cal.3d 105. In Adams, this Court declined to reach the argument advanced by the Association for California Tort Reform advocating “the profitability of the defendant’s misconduct” as the appropriate financial measure in fixing punitive damages. Id. at 116 n.7. For this argument to be advanced by such a pro-defendant trade association is hardly an anomaly. It appears typical, evidently based on the sensible assumption that in the setting of punitive damages, a focus on a defendant’s illicit profits will frequently …
